The paradigm of virtual world environment arises as an useful tool in diverse fields such as e-Health or education, where they provide a new way of communication and interaction with end users. Networking capabilities play an important role in these systems, which motivates the study and understanding of the gaming network traffic. The present work focuses on Open Wonderland, a system that provides the basis for the development of Networked Virtual Environments with educational or health purposes. The goal of this paper is defining a testing environment and modelling the behaviour of the outgoing network traffic at the server side.

Branch-and-Bound (B&B) algorithms to solve Global Optimization (GO) may use n-simplicial partition sets. The n-simplex represents an n-dimensional body with n+1 vertices in (n+1)-dimensional space. The aim of this article is to investigate the properties of the binary tree generated by iterative bisection of the longest edge (LE) of the regular n-simplex as search space. This way of splitting an n-simplex reduces the appearance of bad shaped simplices which facilitates the convergence of the algorithm. It also helps to have a more uniform sampling of the search space since the function is evaluated at vertices of simplices. A motivation for this research is the estimation of the pending computational work load during the B&B GO algorithm. Such estimation may be helpful to steer parallel versions of the algorithms. In this paper we will show that the way the longest edge is selected affects on the number of sub-problems, the number of similar shapes of those sub-problems and their roundness factor. The computational cost to obtain those metrics increases with the dimension n. Here we show the results for n leq 3, where for n=3, we have a 3-dimensional body in a 4-dimensional space. Due to the exponential growth of the binary tree, high performance computing is useful in order to reach a high precision or when n eq 3. We make use of parallel computing under MATLAB software.

A Hybrid Circular Queue Method for Iterative Stencil Computations on GPUs

In this paper, we present a hybrid circular queue method that can significantly boost the performance of stencil computations on GPU by carefully balancing usage of registers and shared-memory. Unlike earlier methods that rely on circular queues predominantly implemented using indirectly addressable shared memory, our hybrid method exploits a new reuse pattern spanning across the multiple time steps in stencil computations so that circular queues can be implemented by both shared memory and registers effectively in a balanced manner. We describe a framework that automatically finds the best placement of data in registers and shared memory in order to maximize the performance of stencil computations. Validation using four different types of stencils on three different GPU platforms shows that our hybrid method achieves speedups up to 2.93X over methods that use circular queues implemented with shared-memory only.

Software architecture evolution has become an integral part of the software lifecycle. Thus, the maintenance of a software system involves among others the maintenance of the software system architecture. Component models are widely used as an essential view to describe software architectures. In recent years, the software architecture community has proposed to additionally model the architectural design decisions for capturing the design rationale and recording the architectural knowledge. Unfortunately, there are no formal relations between design decisions and component models. This leads to potential inconsistencies between the two kinds of models as the software system evolves. In this paper, we propose to overcome this problem by introducing a constraint-based approach for checking the consistency between the decisions and the corresponding component models. Our approach enables explicit formalized mappings of architectural design decisions onto component models. Based on these mappings, component models along with the constraints used for consistency checking between the decisions and the component models can be automatically generated using model-driven techniques. Our approach can cope with changes in the decision model by regenerating the constraints for the component model. Thus, our component model gets updated and validated as the architectural decisions evolve. The evaluation of our approach shows that our prototypical implementation scales sufficiently for large component model sizes and large sets of decisions.

In a model-driven service-oriented architecture (SOA), the services are in large parts generated from models. To facilitate monitoring, governance, and self-adaptation the information in these models can be used by services that monitor, manage, or adapt the SOA at runtime. If a service for monitoring, management, or adaptation in an SOA is dependent on models, and the metamodel changes, usually the service needs to be manually adapted to work with the new version, recompiled, and redeployed. This manual effort impedes the use of models at runtime. To address this problem, this paper introduces model-aware services that work with models at runtime. These services are supported using a service environment, called Morse. Hiding the complexity of implicit versioning of models from users while respecting the principle of Universally Unique Identifiers (UUIDs), it realizes a novel transparent UUID-based model versioning technique. It uses the model-driven approach to automatically generate and deploy Morse services that are used by the model-aware services to access models in the correct version. In this way, monitoring and adaptation in SOAs can be better supported, and the manual effort to evolve services for monitoring, management, or adaptation, which are based on models at runtime, can be minimized.

In service-oriented systems, service-level agreements (SLA) are specified as contracts between service providers and service consumers. SLAs stipulate - among other things - the provided services' performance. A service provider must fulfill the agreements stated in SLAs, e.g., to avoid paying penalties. Service consumers must verify whether the service quality as purchased is delivered. We present an architectural design decision model (ADDM) covering the design of a QoS monitoring infrastructure. The ADDM collects design decisions about measuring, storing, and evaluating performance-related quality-of-service (QoS) agreements. The model includes various requirements and puts forth design solutions by referring to established architectural, remoting, and design patterns. We evaluate the ADDM to build the architecture of a QoS monitoring infrastructure in a case study. The model guides through the decision-making process of designing a QoS monitoring infrastructure. © 2011 ACM.

Future planetary exploration missions demand significant advances in on-board computing capabilities over current avionics architectures based on a single-core processing element. The state-of-the-art multi-core processor provides much promise in meeting such challenges while introducing new fault tolerance problems when applied to space missions. Software-based schemes are being presented in this paper that can achieve system-level fault mitigation beyond that provided by radiation-hard-by-design (RHBD). For mission and time critical applications such as the Terrain Relative Navigation (TRN) for planetary or small body navigation, and landing, a range of fault tolerance methods can be adapted by the application. The software methods being investigated include Error Correction Code (ECC) for data packet routing between cores, virtual network routing, Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR), and Algorithm-Based Fault Tolerance (ABFT). A robust fault tolerance framework that provides fail-operational behavior under hard real-time constraints and graceful degradation will be demonstrated using TRN executing on a commercial Tilera® processor with simulated fault injections. © 2012 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

This paper proposes a methodology using a fast variable selection as a modified version of the Forward-Backward algorithm. This methodology is adapted to the specificities of the data used: very small number of samples and high number of variables. Such data is generated using underlying dependencies and seasonality assumptions, from Meme phrases volume data. By the use of a resampling technique along with the proposed variable selection scheme, significant results are obtained, and the test Normalized Mean Square Error performances are improved. The results indicate that with the assumptions made on the data structure, variable selection is desirable. Also, the obtained information on the selected variables seem to cluster the time series in two very different classes: a set of approximately 600 series, which yield good NMSE, and seem to require very similar sets of variables for the prediction;and another set of 300 - 400 series, for which only the previous series value is of interest for the prediction. This first analysis clearly illustrates the future need to perform a more thorough analysis of the selected variables for each of the batch of series. Also, taking a close look at the possible dependences between the series inside a batch should give information as to why and how they are similar and have found themselves to be grouped under the same batch.
