Modular inversion, the multiplicative inverse of an integer in the ring of integers modulo a prime number, is widely used in public-key cryptography. However, it is one of the most computationally intensive operations, thus, it remains the main performance bottleneck for many cryptographic *** paper presents to the best of the author’s knowledge, the first FPGA-based hardware design for computing the multiplicative inverse using the recently proposed fast constant-time Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) algorithm. This paper introduces two distinct design architectures targeting different applications: (a) a full-width design and (b) a sequential design. The presented designs are compact, parameterizable, and scalable in terms of area and speed. The evaluation shows the proposed designs, which are constant-time and protect against timing-based attacks, outperform existing software and hardware implementations that use other modular inversion techniques. As a specific example, this work presents an evaluation focusing on the use of the multiplicative inverse hardware module to accelerate the ElGamal cryptosystem. The proposed design achieves a speed-up of 90% in the modular inverse calculation and a speed-up of 45% in the overall ElGamal decryption algorithm using our sequential hardware design of fast constant-time GCD *** addition to developing the fast hardware implementation, this work potentially opens up a new direction for designing cryptosystems: the inverse operation is often avoided when designing algorithms, due to its complexity. With the new hardware module, using the inverse becomes more tractable, making it more appealing to use in the design of new cryptosystems.

This work presents a new energy management system (EMS) based on states for a hybrid charging station of electric vehicles (EV). The hybrid charging station is composed of a photovoltaic (PV) system, a complete hydrogen system based on fuel cell (FC), electrolyzer (EZ) and tank as energy storage system (ESS), a battery energy storage system (BES), a grid connection, and six fast charging units, all of them connected to a common MVDC bus through Z-sources converters (ZSC). The states-based EMS is designed to control the power flow among the energy sources of the hybrid charging station. The viability of the EMS is proved under a long-term simulation of 25 years in Simulink by using an EV load profile taken from the Strategy technology Energy Plan of the EU and real data for the sun irradiance.

Consumer’s privacy is a main concern in Smart Grids (SGs) due to the sensitivity of energy data, particularly when used to train machine learning models for different services. These data-driven models often require huge amounts of data to achieve acceptable performance leading in most cases to risks of privacy leakage. By pushing the training to the edge, Federated Learning (FL) offers a good compromise between privacy preservation and the predictive performance of these models. The current paper presents an overview of FL applications in SGs while discussing their advantages and drawbacks, mainly in load forecasting, electric vehicles, fault diagnoses, load disaggregation and renewable energies. In addition, an analysis of main design trends and possible taxonomies is provided considering data partitioning, the communication topology, and security mechanisms. This paper presents a novel approach for screening women in their first trimester of pregnancy to identify those at high risk of having a child with Down syndrome (DS), using machine learning algorithms. Various machine learning models, including statistical, linear, and ensemble models, were trained using a pseudo-anonymized dataset of 90,532 screening patients. This dataset, containing less than 1% positive cases, was obtained from Cruces University Hospital, a public health hospital (Osakidetza) in Baracaldo, Basque Country, Spain. The models incorporate a set of input variables, including demographic variables such as maternal age, weight, ethnicity, smoking status, and diabetes status, as well as laboratory variables like nuchal translucency (NT), pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A), and beta-human chorionic gonadotropin hormone (B-HCG) levels. The trained classification algorithms achieved ROC-AUC values between 0.970 and 0.982, with sensitivity and specificity of 0.94. The results indicate that machine learning techniques can effectively predict Down syndrome risk in first-trimester screening programs. © 2025 by the authors.

This work investigates the interaction between Neg-ative Bias Temperature Instability (NBTI)and radiation effects in 14nm FinFET devices. Due to the complex interaction between traps generated by NBTI and induced charges by strikes of ionizing particles, we opted for a complete physical-based analysis using TCAD mixed-mode simulations. This enables an accurate estimation and then modeling of the duration a circuit requires to recover from a particle strike and, thus, return to correct operation under the effects of NBTI. This a crucial aspect, because the longer the recovery time, the higher the probabilities of a soft-error and that this error remains undetected. Further, our employed setup enables an accurate determination of the critical charge (Q crit ), i. e. the minimum collected charge that results into a faulty transition of a circuit's output node. Our investigation reveals that there is indeed a strong relation between NBTI and the time a circuit remains in faulty state. Consequently, detection schemes must be adapted during circuit's operation to take aging into account in order to avoid that errors remain undetected.

Accurate short-term wind speed forecasting is essential for large-scale integration of wind power generation. However, the seasonal and stochastic characteristics of wind speed make forecasting a challenging task. This study uses a new hybrid evolutionary approach that uses a popular evolutionary search algorithm, CMA-ES, to tune the hyper-parameters of two long-term-short-term (LSTM) ANN models for wind prediction. The proposed hybrid approach is trained on data gathered from an offshore wind turbine installed in a Swedish wind farm located in the Baltic Sea. Two forecasting horizons including ten-minutes ahead (absolute short term) and one-hour ahead (short term) are considered in our experiments. Our experimental results indicate that the new approach is superior to five other applied machine learning models, i.e., polynomial neural network (PNN), feed-forward neural network (FNN), nonlinear autoregressive neural network (NAR) and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), as measured by five performance criteria. Reliable wind turbine power prediction is imperative to the planning, scheduling and control of wind energy farms for stable power production. In recent years Machine Learning (ML) methods have been successfully applied in a wide range of domains, including renewable energy. However, due to the challenging nature of power prediction in wind farms, current models are far short of the accuracy required by industry. In this paper, we deploy a composite ML approach-namely a hybrid neuro-evolutionary algorithm-for accurate forecasting of the power output in wind-turbine farms. We use historical data in the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems as input to estimate the power output from an onshore wind farm in Sweden. At the beginning stage, the k-means clustering method and an Autoencoder are employed, respectively, to detect and filter noise in the SCADA measurements. Next, with the prior knowledge that the underlying wind patterns are highly non-linear and diverse, we combine a self-adaptive differential evolution (SaDE) algorithm as a hyper-parameter optimizer, and a recurrent neural network (RNN) called Long Short-term memory (LSTM) to model the power curve of a wind turbine in a farm. Two short time forecasting horizons, including ten-minutes ahead and one-hour ahead, are considered in our experiments. We show that our approach outperforms its counterparts. FTT-NAS: Discovering fault-tolerant convolutional neural architecture

With the fast evolvement of embedded deep-learning computing systems, applications powered by deep learning are moving from the cloud to the edge. When deploying neural networks (NNs) onto the devices under complex environments, there are various types of possible faults: soft errors caused by cosmic radiation and radioactive impurities, voltage instability, aging, temperature variations, malicious attackers, etc. Thus the safety risk of deploying NNs is now drawing much attention. In this paper, after the analysis of the possible faults in various types of NN accelerators, we formalize and implement various fault models from the algorithmic perspective. We propose Fault-Tolerant Neural architecture Search (FT-NAS) to automatically discover convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures that are reliable to various faults in nowadays devices. Then we incorporate fault-tolerant training (FTT) in the search process to achieve better results, which is referred to as FTT-NAS. Experiments on CIFAR-10 show that the discovered architectures outperform other manually designed baseline architectures significantly, with comparable or fewer floating-point operations (FLOPs) and parameters. Specifically, with the same fault settings, F-FTT-Net discovered under the feature fault model achieves an accuracy of 86.2% (VS. 68.1% achieved by MobileNet-V2), and W-FTT-Net discovered under the weight fault model achieves an accuracy of 69.6% (VS. 60.8% achieved by ResNet-18). By inspecting the discovered architectures, we find that the operation primitives, the weight quantization range, the capacity of the model, and the connection pattern have influences on the fault resilience capability of NN models. Despite the recency of their conception, Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) constitute an extensively-researched machine learning sub-field for the creation of synthetic data through deep generative modeling. GANs have consequently been applied in a number of domains, most notably computer vision, in which they are typically used to generate or transform synthetic images. Given their relative ease of use, it is therefore natural that researchers in the field of networking (which has seen extensive application of deep learning methods) should take an interest in GAN-based approaches. The need for a comprehensive survey of such activity is therefore urgent. In this paper, we demonstrate how this branch of machine learning can benefit multiple aspects of computer and communication networks, including mobile networks, network analysis, internet of things, physical layer, and cybersecurity. In doing so, we shall provide a novel evaluation framework for comparing the performance of different models in non-image applications, applying this to a number of reference network datasets. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

A novel FPGA-based high throughput accelerator for binary search trees

This paper presents a deeply pipelined and massively parallel Binary Search Tree (BST) accelerator for Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). Our design relies on the extremely parallel on-chip memory, or Block RAMs (BRAMs) architecture of FPGAs. To achieve significant throughput for the search operation on BST, we present several novel mechanisms including tree duplication as well as horizontal, duplicated, and hybrid (horizontal-vertical) tree partitioning. Also, we present efficient techniques to decrease the stalling rates that can occur during the parallel tree search. By combining these techniques and implementations on Xilinx Virtex-7 VC709 platform, we achieve up to 8X throughput improvement gain in comparison to the baseline implementation, i.e., a fully-pipelined FPGA-based accelerator.
