In this paper a method to estimate the initial rotor position of the switched reluctance motor (SRM) at the stand still condition is proposed. The proposed method can be implemented by the simple microcontroller based system, and it is not necessary to know the magnetization curves. The impulse gate drive signal is applied and the winding current is detected and its approximate value is used for calculating the rotor position. The compensation method to reduce the estimation error thorough one cycle is also mentioned. The proposed method is implemented with the 6-stator-pole and 4- rotor-pole, 1.5 kW 3-phase switched reluctance motor.

This article presents a remote automatic meter reading (AMR) system as a result of the Mirakonta project, in which are involved several university investigation groups and a private company. The AMR system is composed by reader devices and a group of elements that allow a wireless connection to a central server. The system is based on taking a picture of the fluid meter digit display, preprocessing and transmitting it to a remote element using a radio frequency ad-hoc protocol. The reader device is implemented on a FPGA based system and the firmware can be updated remotely (remote reconfiguration). In addition, the different parameters of the reader can be configured remotely. To meet the low power requirements a sleep and wake-up technique is applied. All the requirements of the system have been covered, offering a hardware-software product that covers most needs of the end users.

Performance uncertainty is a barrier to implementation of innovative technologies. This research investigates the potential offlexible design - one that enables future change - to improve the economic performance of a naturally ventilated building. The flexible design of the naturally ventilated building enables future installation of a mechanical cooling system by including features such as space for pipes and chillers. The benefits of the flexible design are energy savings, delay of capital costs and capability of mitigating the risk of a failed building (by installing the mechanical cooling system). To evaluate the flexible design, building energy simulation is conducted over a multi-year time period with stochastic outdoor temperature variables. One result is a probability distribution of the time when the maximum allowable indoor temperature under natural ventilation is exceeded, which may be "never." Probability distributions are also obtained for energy savings and cost savings as compared to a mechanically cooled building. Together, these results allow decision-makers to evaluate the long-term performance risks and opportunities afforded by a flexible implementation strategy for natural ventilation. It is shown that the likelihood of future installation of mechanical cooling is most sensitive to design parameters. The impact of increased climate variability depends on the local climate. The probability of installing the mechanical system also depends on the comfort criteria. The results show thatcapital costs for cooling equipment are much greater than the present value of 10 years of cooling energy costs. This result motivates consideration of flexible design as opposed to hybrid cooling designs (which have immediate installation of mechanical cooling). Future work will study the impact of uncertain energy prices on investment attractiveness of naturally ventilated buildings. Hundreds of thousands circuits can not be verified easily while develop a field programmable gate array (FPGA) system. In this paper, we develop a functional verification tool, namely FVT, to verify the designer defined specification of functionalities with simulator and emulator in a FPGA system. In addition, FVT can point out the exact bugs for functionality where locates at specific cycle. Experiment results show that FVT can save time up to 99%.

In this paper, we propose an enhancement partition method that incorporates formal partition, fitting system constraints and hardware orient partition algorithm to solve partitioning issue for embedded multiprocessor FPGA systems. With formal partition, we can rapidly obtain a set of partitioning results that satisfy the system constraints on the number of processors. To fit various system constraints, we find out all partition result sets by fitting system constraints. Finally, hardware orient partition can provide a nearly best partition result for designer to develop multiprocessors system-on-a-chip system. Experiment results show that the proposed method can obtain the fitting best partitioning result than other partitioning method using JPEG encoding system example.

In this paper, we present hardware-oriented partitioning approach that can solve the partitioning issues for embedded multiprocessor FPGA systems. In addition, it can gain a better partitioning result, faster execution time, less memory and higher slice used rate, under satisfied system constraints. We also demonstrate the feasibility of our approach by a JPEG encoding system using Xilinx ML310 FPGA platform. Experiment results show that the execution time and memory size are improved.

A study on the comprehensive evaluation of the social, environmental and economic benefits of the land fund expenditure in Shenzhen was made based on fuzzy mathematics. To be more objective and more effective, the benefit evaluation procedure was improved in the following aspects. Firstly, the index system of comprehensive evaluation was established according to the main usage of the land fund in Shenzhen over the years. Secondly, with the assumption that the direct benefits and indirect benefits are different in proportion, the paper confirmed the weights of the main indexes according to the actual expenditure situation of the land fund. Finally, this paper regarded the relevant standard of developed country and urban construction in our country as the standard to confirm the grades of the indexes. The calculation result showed that there are 13 indexes regarded as excellent among the 24 indexes selected; the proportion changes of direct and indirect benefits have little influence on the total evaluation result; weights and evaluation grades of the social benefit were the highest in the 3 types of benefits, the economic benefit was the lowest; the weights and evaluation grades of municipal engineering were the highest, and accessory facility was the lowest.

We propose a mitigation technique of high-level multiple access interference(MAI) for multimedia optical Code- Division Multiple-Access(CDMA) systems using the optical power selector. The proposed system can eliminate high-intensity MAI at the receiver for the low-priority users. Moreover, the proposed scheme can reduce by half the required number of code sequences compared to the conventional scheme. As a result, the proposed scheme can obtain higher code spreading gain due to the increase of number of weights at the same code-length. We analyze performances of the proposed scheme and show that both the high-priority users and low-priority users achieve lower bit error rates in comparison to the conventional scheme.

The recent changes in the world and engineering present both challenges and opportunities to the engineering education. Engineering education is changing to meet these challenges. More and more engineering programs strive to include entrepreneurship and innovation, traditionally American values, in the engineering curriculum. In this paper, we present our view on teaching entrepreneurship to future engineers and describe our experience in introducing entrepreneurship in engineering education through an NSF-sponsored pilot program based on collaboration between Stony Brook University and three other major higher education institutions on Long Island.
