Smart grid deploys a large number of smart terminals and sensing devices to form an edge network, as well as a virtual network of information space and the power Internet of Things. As a key component of 5G and future network, the latency of end-to-end and the traffic of backhaul link could be reduced by edge network. Nevertheless, the function of storage and computing are moved down to the edge nodes in mobile edge network which increases the complexity of resource management. So it is an important issue to find out a more effectively resources allocation mechanism as well as meeting the requirements of each user. Edge computing refers to the processing of large amounts of edge data in the edge space in the edge network, thereby reducing dependence on the data center, achieving limited self-governance of the edge network, and reducing off-line threats. Although Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) has been applied to many of the work related to edge networks, there lacks the applications for green resource allocation. A Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) based green resource allocation mechanism is proposed in this paper which aims at efficiently allocating the resources while satisfying the needs of mobile users. The value of energy efficiency can be obtained when the algorithm achieves convergence according to the simulation results. The efficiency of the DRL-based mechanism and its effectiveness in meeting user requirements and implementing green resource allocation are validated.

The mitigating role of regulation on the concentric patterns of broadband diffusion. The case of Finland

This article analyzes the role of Finnish regulation in achieving the broadband penetration goals defined by the National Regulatory Authority. It is well known that in the absence of regulatory mitigation the population density has a positive effect on broadband diffusion. Hence, we measure the effect of the population density on the determinants of broadband diffusion throughout the postal codes of Finland via Geographically Weighted Regression. We suggest that the main determinants of broadband diffusion and the population density follow a spatial pattern that is either concentric with a weak/medium/strong strength or non-concentric convex/concave. Based on 10 patterns, we argue that the Finnish spectrum policy encouraged Mobile Network Operators to satisfy ambitious Universal Service Obligations without the need for a Universal Service Fund. Spectrum auctions facilitated infrastructure-based competition via equitable spectrum allocation and coverage obligation delivery via low-fee licenses. However, state subsidies for fiber deployment did not attract investment from nationwide operators due to mobile preference. These subsidies encouraged demand-driven investment, leading to the emergence of fiber consumer cooperatives. To explain this emergence, we show that when population density decreases, the level of mobile service quality decreases and community commitment increases. Hence, we recommend regulators implementing market-driven strategies for 5G to stimulate local investment. For example, by allocating the 3.5 GHz and higher bands partly through local light licensing. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Currently, video has becoming one of the most traffic-intense Internet applications. However, it also causes Internet transmission problems, such as congestion, high delay and bad user experience. Therefore, it is necessary to design a cache mechanism for some popular videos in advance. To address this problem, this paper designs an Internet application-driven algorithm for centralized cache placement of popular videos in software-defined information-centric networking. First, it designs a centralized control architecture and the cache controller and node working mechanism, and then this problem is formulated as an integer programming. Finally, it proposes a greedy algorithm based on a 0-1 multiple knapsack problem to solve the integer programming and sets a performance indicator to evaluate this algorithm. The result shows that the algorithm can achieve desirable performance. © 2018 IEEE.

Cognitive-LPWAN: Towards intelligent wireless services in hybrid low power wide area networks

The relentless development of the Internet of Things (IoT) communication technologies and the gradual maturity of Artificial Intelligence (AI) have led to a powerful cognitive computing ability. Users can now access efficient and convenient smart services in smart-city, green-IoT and heterogeneous networks. AI has been applied in various areas, including the intelligent household, advanced health-care, automatic driving and emotional interactions. This paper focuses on current wireless-communication technologies, including cellular-communication technologies (4G, 5G), low-power wide-area (LPWA) technologies with an unlicensed spectrum (LoRa, SigFox), and other LPWA technologies supported by 3GPP working with an authorized spectrum (EC-GSM, LTE-M, NB-IoT). We put forward a cognitive low-power wide-area-network (Cognitive-LPWAN) architecture to safeguard stable and efficient communications in a heterogeneous IoT. To ensure that the user can employ the AI efficiently and conveniently, we realize a variety of LPWA technologies to safeguard the network layer. In addition, to balance the demand for heterogeneous IoT devices with the communication delay and energy consumption, we put forward the AI-enabled LPWA hybrid method, starting from the perspective of traffic control. The AI algorithm provides the smart control of wireless-communication technology, intelligent applications and services for the choice of different wireless-communication technologies. As an example, we consider the AIWAC emotion interaction system, build the Cognitive-LPWAN and test the proposed AI-enabled LPWA hybrid method. The experimental results show that our scheme can meet the demands of communication-delay applications. Cognitive-LPWAN selects appropriate communication technologies to achieve a better interaction experience. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Multiple user context inference by fusing data sources

Inference of user context information, including user’s gender, age, marital status, location and so on, has been proven to be valuable for building context aware recommender system. However, prevalent existing studies on user context inference have two shortcommings: 1. focusing on only a single data source (e.g. Internet browsing logs, or mobile call records), and 2. ignoring the interdependence of multiple user contexts (e.g. interdependence between age and marital status), which have led to poor inference performance. To solve this problem, in this paper, we first exploit tensor outer product to fuse multiple data sources in the feature space to obtain an extensional user feature representation. Following this, by taking this extensional user feature representation as input, we propose a multiple attribute probabilistic model called MulAProM to infer user contexts that can take advantage of the interdependence between them. Our study is based on large telecommunication datasets from the local mobile operator of Shanghai, China, and consists of two data sources, 4.6 million call detail records and 7.5 million data traffic records of 8, 000 mobile users, collected in the course of six months. The experimental results show that our model can outperform other models in terms of recall, precision, and the F1-measure. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

We introduce an open-source web-based platform that integrated multiple methods for visualizing Shor's algorithm. We mainly focus on three different approaches which are widely used in the field of visualizing qubit and quantum algorithms. These methods include Bloch sphere, quantum circuit and probability distribution map. We combine these geometrical methods and abstract the level of quantum circuit in order to introduce the well-known Shor's algorithm more explicitly. Our platform provides a direct and comprehensible perspective for better understanding the basic principles of quantum computation and how the features of quantum algorithms reduce the time complexity of certain problems. It also provides an interactive way for users to easily test the Shor's factoring algorithm. With further improvement and development, potential capacity can be proved in the field of visualization of quantum computation.

FlowTrace： measuring round-trip time and tracing path in software-defined networking with low communication overhead

：In today＇s networks, load balancing and priority queues in switches are used to support various quality-of-service （QoS） features and provide preferential treatment to certain types of traffic. Traditionally, network operators use ‘traceroute＇ and ‘ping＇ to troubleshoot load balancing and QoS problems. However, these tools are not supported by the common OpenFlow-based switches in software-defined networking （SDN）. In addition, traceroute and ping have potential problems. Because load balancing mechanisms balance flows to different paths, it is impossible for these tools to send a single type of probe packet to find the forwarding paths of flows and measure latencies. Therefore, tracing flows＇ real forwarding paths is needed before measuring their latencies, and path tracing and latency measurement should be jointly considered. To this end, FlowTrace is proposed to find arbitrary flow paths and measure flow latencies in OpenFlow networks. FlowTrace collects all flow entries and calculates flow paths according to the collected flow entries. However, polling flow entries from switches will induce high overhead in the control plane of SDN. Therefore, a passive flow table collecting method with zero control plane overhead is proposed to address this problem. After finding flows＇ real forwarding paths, FlowTrace uses a new measurement method to measure the latencies of different flows. Results of experiments conducted in Mininet indicate that FlowTrace can correctly find flow paths and accurately measure the latencies of flows in different priority classes.

Energy-efficient resource allocation in noma heterogeneous networks

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has attracted much recent attention owing to its capability for improving the system spectral efficiency in wireless communications. Deploying NOMA in heterogeneous network can satisfy users' explosive data traffic requirements, and NOMA will likely play an important role in the fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication networks. However, NOMA brings new technical challenges on resource allocation due to the mutual cross-tier interference in heterogeneous networks. In this article, to study the tradeoff between data rate performance and energy consumption in NOMA, we examine the problem of energy-efficient user scheduling and power optimization in 5G NOMA heterogeneous networks. The energy-efficient user scheduling and power allocation schemes are introduced for the downlink 5G NOMA heterogeneous network for perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI) respectively. Simulation results show that the resource allocation schemes can significantly increase the energy efficiency of 5G NOMA heterogeneous network for both cases of perfect CSI and imperfect CSI.
