This article describes the standardization trends in the International Organization for Standardization/ International Electrotechnical Commission Joint Technical Committee 1 (ISO/IEC JTC 1)/Subcommit-tee 29 (SC 29), and International Telecommunication Union - Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) Study Group 16 (SG16) as well as ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 27 and ITU-T SG17. Both SC 29 and SG16 deal with multimedia coding and transmission and are shaping the future of entertainment and business communication. Due to the complexity of smart manufacturing systems, digital twins (DTs) can help manufacturers test and validate products as well as determine any process failures before production. computer numerical control (CNC) machines are widely used and employed in several manufacturing industries because of their precision and efficiency. Despite the wide adoption of CNC machines, there is currently no CNC-based DT that simulates an entire production process. This paper demonstrates the implementation and validation of a DT that can 1) replicate the physical manufacturing operations of products on Tormach CNC machines by accurately generating the positional values of the machine's tool path along the X, Y, and Z axes, 2) employ MTConnect's communication protocol by utilizing an adapter and an agent that produces data such as timestamps, axis positions, and spindle speed into MTConnect's standardized XML format, 3) deploy an MTConnect utility, dataminer, to collect data from the agent and properly store it into a JSON format for further analysis. For validation purposes, an example coin geometry was simulated on the DT and manufactured in aluminum on a real Tormach machine. A comparison between the simulated operations and real system was made to validate the accuracy of the DT. Dynamic time warping (DTW) was used to compare process data from the DT with data from the real machine. Our analysis shows that the DT and real system have a high correlation as the DTW warping path is closely aligned at a 45 degree angle line and has minimal time warping. © 2023 IEEE.

Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) Fingerprinting-based Indoor Positioning Systems (IPS) offer several key advantages over other indoor positioning technologies, including cost-effectiveness with high accuracy and passive tracking of entities’ location without Global Positioning System (GPS) dependence. However, achieving a satisfactory accuracy performance of the WLAN fingerprinting-based IPS is still challenging, as it is affected by several factors, such as obstacles (e.g., walls and furniture) that can block or weaken wireless signals. Additionally, the IPS’s accuracy can be affected by environmental changes, such as the height, addition, or removal of a WLAN Access Point (AP) or changes in radio frequency interference. This paper presents a novel algorithm incorporating a probabilistic analytical model employing only high signal relations that mitigate the effect of low signal relation on the WLAN fingerprinting-based IPS, thus improving the accuracy performance. Furthermore, it analyses the impact of AP heights on the accuracy performance of the WLAN IPS. Upon extensive experiments, the proposed algorithm improves the accuracy of the IPS by an average of 32.74% in terms of Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). These results imply that incorporating APs’ height and high signal relations can significantly improve the accuracy performance of the WLAN fingerprinting-based IPS. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

For single-photon generation based on cavity quantum electrodynamics, we investigate a practical model assuming a Gaussian wave packet. This model makes it possible to comprehensively analyze the temporal dynamics of an atom-cavity system with both adiabatic and nonadiabatic conditions using analytical expressions. These results enable us to clarify the relationship between pulse width and maximum success probability over the full range of coupling regimes. We demonstrate how to achieve a high success probability while keeping a short pulse width by optimizing the cavity transmittance parameter and the time-controlled external field. Our formulations provide a practical tool for efficient single-photon generation in a wide variety of experimental platforms.

Background: Conceptual knowledge is central to human cognition. Neuroimaging studies suggest that conceptual processing relies on the joint contribution of modality-specific perceptual-motor and multimodal brain regions. In particular, the multimodal left inferior parietal lobe (IPL) couples with auditory association cortex during sound knowledge retrieval and with somatomotor cortex during action feature retrieval. However, it remains unknown whether the interaction between modality-specific and multimodal cortices is causally relevant for conceptually-guided behavior. Methods: To tackle this issue, we applied offline transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over modality-specific cortex (somatomotor, auditory, or sham), before 24 healthy participants received online TMS over multimodal cortex (IPL, or sham) during action and sound knowledge tasks on written words. For the first time in a TMS study on higher cognition, TMS targeting and dosing were optimized using individual a priori computational electric field simulations. Results: We found that combined stimulation of auditory association cortex and multimodal IPL selectively impaired sound judgments, but not action judgments, on low sound–low action words (BF₁₀ = 5.316). Unifocal TMS over auditory cortex or IPL alone did not disrupt behavior, suggesting adaptive compensatory plasticity. Conclusions: These results indicate that the joint contribution of multimodal IPL and auditory cortex is causally relevant for sound knowledge retrieval: The functional relevance of left IPL depends on the integrity of the auditory cortex, and vice versa, as single perturbation of either region did not disrupt performance. Our findings support “hybrid theories” of conceptual processing, which propose that task-dependent functional interactions between modality-specific and multimodal regions are crucial. © 2025 The Authors

The solid waste management is the process of proper decomposition of waste materials within a period of time. This includes the collection of garbage's and then proceeded through certain measures for decomposition. There are various methods adopted in the garbage separation process. This includes the artificial intelligence techniques for the estimation and determination of the solid waste through automatic detection and separation of the garbage waste using control and sensing units. They are integrated with the internet of things to enable the two way communication system. This helps to visualize the functioning of the system adopting the digital platform. The proposed system is implemented through the smart dust bin held in every household that automatically senses the non-biodegradable and biodegradable waste materials. The classification of the waste materials are identified through the image processing techniques. © 2023 IEEE.

Writing is a complex process at the center of much of modern human activity. Despite it appears to be a linear process, writing conceals many highly non-linear processes. Previous research has focused on three phases of writing: planning, translation and transcription, and revision. While research has shown these are non-linear, they are often treated linearly when measured. Here, we introduce measures to detect and quantify subcycles of planning (exploration) and translation (exploitation) during the writing process. We apply these to a novel dataset that recorded the creation of a text in all its phases, from early attempts to the finishing touches on a final version. This dataset comes from a series of writing workshops in which, through innovative versioning software, we were able to record all the steps in the construction of a text. More than 60 junior researchers in science wrote a scientific essay intended for a general readership. We recorded each essay as a writing cloud, defined as a complex topological structure capturing the history of the essay itself. Through this unique dataset of writing clouds, we expose a representation of the writing process that quantifies its complexity and the writer’s efforts throughout the draft and through time. Interestingly, this representation highlights the phases of "translation flow", where authors improve existing ideas, and exploration, where creative deviations appear as the writer returns to the planning phase. These turning points between translation and exploration become rarer as the writing process progresses and the author approaches the final version. Our results and the new measures introduced have the potential to foster the discussion about the non-linear nature of writing and support the development of tools that can support more creative and impactful writing processes.
