In computer systems, printable characters include not only 62 alphanumeric characters (0-9, a-z and A-Z) but also non-alphanumeric characters (e.g. *, \, , %). Base64 is a commonly used encoding scheme that represents binary data in an ASCII string format. However, for Base64, non-alphanumeric characters (e.g. *, \, , %) are problematic for filenames and URLs. For example, + is error-prone in URL and/ is not allowed in filenames. To address this issue, we propose a new method, Base62x, as an alternative approach to Base64. The proposed method is more effective in application development and fully compatible with symbol-sensitive applications, such as, file systems, IP addresses and safe transmission of non-ASCII over the Internet. © 2011 IEEE.

We study a fundamental measure for wireless interference in the SINR model known as (weighted) inductive independence. This measure characterizes the electiveness of using oblivious power - when the power used by a transmitter only depends on the distance to the receiver - as a mechanism for improving wireless capacity. We prove optimal bounds for inductive independence, implying a number of algorithmic applications. An algorithm is provided that achieves - due to existing lower bounds - capacity that is asymptotically best possible using oblivious power assignments. Improved approximation algorithms are provided for a number of problems for oblivious power and for power control, including distributed scheduling, connectivity, secondary spectrum auctions, and dynamic packet scheduling.

A home network service middleware called "UKARl-Kernel" has been proposed for distributed and collaborative networked appliances and networked sensors. A home network service can be established by the middleware using distributed function elements on the networked appliances. The middleware uses a service scenario description framework on the basis of BPEL, an XML language to define business processes, to set up the service according to the present situation. In this paper, we describe the overview and of the home network service middleware and its service scenario description. Then implementation of an emulator for the set-vice scenario description framework is reported. It is noted that the proposed description framework can be constructed easily by using the existing toolkits.

In the biotechnology field, the deployment of the Multiple Sequence Alignment (MSA) problem, which is a high performance computing demanding process, is one of the new challenges to address on the new parallel systems. The aim of this problem is to find similar regions on biological sequences. Furthermore, the goal of MSA applications is to align as much sequences as possible with a level of quality that makes the alignment biologically meaningful. An efficiency study of different MSA implementations, based on T-Coffee (one of the most used MSA aligners), has been performed in order to find new optimizations that may improve the average execution time on multi-core systems. We found that the current parallel implementations have some performance issues, affecting negatively the scalability of the process. Finally, the proposed implementation based on the usage of threads in conjunction with a message-passing library is presented, with the aim to optimize the execution of the MSA problem in multi-core-based clusters. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

Ubiquitous computing is associated with a vision of everything being connected to everything. However, for successful applications to emerge, it will not be the quantity but the quality and usefulness of connections that will matter. Our concern is how qualitative relations and more selective connections can be established between smart artefacts, and how users can retain control over artefact interconnection. We propose context proximity for selective artefact communication, using the context of artefacts for matchmaking. We further suggest to empower users with simple but effective means to impose the same context on a number of artefacts. To prove our point we have implemented Smart-Its Friends, small embedded devices that become connected when a user holds them together and shakes them. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

Middleware has emerged as an important architectural component in modern distributed systems. Most recently, industry has witnessed the emergence of component-based middleware platforms, such as Enterprise JavaBeans and the CORBA Component Model, aimed at supporting third party development, configuration and subsequent deployment of software. The goal of our research is to extend this work in order to exploit the benefits of component-based approaches within the middleware platform as well as on top of the platform, the result being more configurable and reconfigurable middleware technologies. This is achieved through a marriage of components with reflection, the latter providing the necessary levels of openness to access the underlying component infrastructure. More specifically, the paper describes in detail the OpenCOM component model, a lightweight and efficient component model based on COM. The paper also describes how OpenCOM can be used to construct a full middleware platform, and also investigates the performance of both OpenCOM and this resultant platform. The main overall contribution of the paper is to demonstrate that flexible middleware technologies can be developed without an adverse effect on the performance of resultant systems. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

Middleware technologies such as CORBA or Java RMI have proved their suitability for "standard" client-server applications. However, challenges from existing and new types of applications, including support for multimedia real-time requirements and mobility seems to indicate the need for defining a new architecture for open distributed systems. The new architecture should be designed from the beginning with flexibility and adaptability in mind. This can be achieved by defining an open engineering middleware platform that is run time configurable and allows inspection and adaptation of the underlying components. This paper proposes a next generation middleware architecture that conforms to requirements as indicated above. This architecture is characterised by being open, and adaptable based on the principle of reflection. The paper also reports on some existing research prototypes with a focus towards their suitability as next generation middleware. © 1999 IEEE.

Middleware is playing an increasingly central role in the design of modern computer systems and will, we believe, continue to enjoy this prominence in the future. There is, however, a demonstrable need for more openness and flexibility in middleware [1]. We believe strongly that reflective middleware is the right technology to meet these demands. Indeed, there is strong evidence that such platforms are not only significantly more configurable and reconfigurable than conventional platforms, but that they offer better support for software evolution generally [2]. The main goals of OpenORB v2, the system discussed in this extended abstract, are to address what we perceive as the most pressing shortcomings of current reflective middleware platforms. First, performance: in the worst case, this needs to be on a par with that of conventional platforms, and in the best case (e.g. in cut-down configurations) it should be significantly better. Second, integrity: while permitting maximal reconfigurability, it should be possible to control and constrain reconfigurations so that damaging changes are discouraged and/ or disallowed.

Efficient and robust metacomputing requires the decomposition of complex jobs into tasks that must be scheduled on distributed processing nodes. There are various ways of creating a schedule and implementing it efficiently, depending upon global system state knowledge. Many computations may be structured as process networks, where data is either pushed from the source node to the target node where it will be used, or is pulled from source to target at the instigation of the target. We have developed a metacomputing infrastructure to investigate this idea, which employs the concept of a rich data pointer, the DISCWorld Remote Access Mechanism (DRAM), which can point to either data or services, and can be traded in a client/multiple-server model. We present an extension of the DRAM concept and implementation to represent and describe data that has not yet been created, the "DRAM Future" (DRAMF). We show how the use of the DRAMF facilitates efficient metacomputing scheduling and runtime optimisation on high performance distributed systems. We present a recursive algorithm for determining the optimal placement of a job's components in the presence of partial system state information. This algorithm uses only a selected subset of all available processing nodes, and we implement it using DRAMFs. There are many research issues to consider when designing a robust and general algorithm for scheduling and process placement on distributed systems. We address some of these issues in our distributed Information Systems Control World project[6] as do other research projects[2].
