An improved genetic algorithm for the MIS problem

The maximum independent set (MIS) problem is a typical NP-hard problem. To solve the MIS problem more effectively, some new approaches are proposed in this paper. We present a new approach to generate the initial population, which generates maximal independent sets to reduce system overhead for repair. A new quality protection operator is introduced, which selects the elitist to ensure the convergence and abandons almost whole generation to avoid the premature. We apply dynamic strategy to the initial population, repair operator, crossover operator to increases the diversity. Marchiori's heuristic and Zhang's guided mutation are regulated into our framework. Experimental results show that our improved genetic algorithm has better performance in solving the MIS problem on all DIMACS benchmark graphs. © 2014 Binary Information Press

This paper is to propose a novel computer network estimation method based on Morelet wavelet SVC algorithm. Morelet wavelet function is used as the support vectors kernel function of SVC algorithm. First, we collect 90 testing samples including 40 network attack samples and 50 normal samples to study the estimation ability for network attack state, the estimation accuracy of Morelet wavelet SVC algorithm for network attack state is 96.7%, and the estimation accuracy of traditional SVC algorithm for network attack state is 92.2%. Then, we collect 40 testing samples including four network attack types to study the estimation ability for network attack state, the identification accuracy of Morelet wavelet SVC algorithm for network attack state is 92.5%, and the identification accuracy of traditional SVC algorithm for network attack state is 85.0%. Thus, we can conclude that Morelet wavelet SVC algorithm has better estimation ability for network attack state than traditional SVC algorithm.

In this paper we proposed an approach based on genetic algorithm (GA) and digital image processing (DIP) to deal with the problem of cutting identical items (pieces) with irregular shapes in metal plates (objects). The goal is to maximize the number of items to be cut in the available area of the object. In this approach both object and the items are depicted as color images. The GA is responsible for generating the solutions, each one represented by a vector containing a set of translations and angles that indicate the positions and orientations for cutting the pieces. The evaluation of each solution generated by GA is performed by an image analysis algorithm that basically detects overlapping among the items placed on the object. Preliminary experiments indicate that the use of GA combined with DIP is a good alternative for solving the investigated problem. © 2015 ACM.

An in vitro stretch-injury model for elongation-controlled neuronal cells: Effect of strains along neurite 15

Diffuse axonal injury (DAI), a major component of traumatic brain injury, is associated with rapid deformation of brain tissue resulting in the stretching of neural axons. Focal axonal beading, which is the morphological hallmarks of DAI pathology, leads to the disconnection of neurons from tissues, resulting in cell death. Our goal is better understanding of neuronal tolerance and help to predicting the pathogenesis of DAI from mechanical loading to the head. In present study, we developed a stretch-injury model that subjected cultured neuronal cells in which the directions of neurite elongation were controlled with microfluidic culture technique to uniaxial stretch and examined the effect of strains along neurite on the cell damage. Neurites from PC 12 cells were extended at 0, 45 and 90 degrees to stretch direction using a fabricated poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) piece having microgrooves in combination with PDMS substrate. Following stretch with a strain of 0.22 and a strain rate of 27 s-1, the morphology of same neurites were observed at 5 min–24 h. As a result, the beading along neurites oriented at 0 degree increased immediately following stretch and the increase was sustained until 24 h, although the beading along neurites oriented at 45 and 90 degrees transiently increased within 1 h following stretch. Many rupture of neurites was observed more in neurites oriented at 0 and 90 degrees than in neurites oriented at 45 degrees, however, the retraction and disappearance of neurites did not differ in any orientation conditions. These results suggest that the difference in strain along neurite induces different types and degrees of neurite damage and not strain of cellcultured substrate but strain loaded to neurite is important to evaluation of neuronal injury. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

Deterioration diagnosis of a lead acid battery by phase change between impedance and reactance was measured. The measurement frequency of inner impedance was changed from 100 Hz to 5 kHz. The lead acid battery with 11V open terminal voltage at the charge condition of 60% was judged as enabled in case the phase of impedance was more than 35 degrees when the application limit is CCA 180 Ampere. © 2014 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

In the present study, we developed an experimental model that subjected cultured neurons to uniaxial stretch by controlling the direction of axonal elongation with a microfluidic culture technique and examined the effect of strains along the axon on cell damage. Neurites from PC 12 cells that differentiate into neurons with structurally axon-like cylindrical protrusions by nerve growth factor were extended at 0°, 45°, and 90° relative to the tensile direction by using a fabricated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) piece with microgrooves in combination with a PDMS substrate. The morphology of the same neurites was observed before and after stretching with a strain of 0.22 at a strain rate of 27 s-1. As a result, swellings along neurites oriented at 0° increased immediately following stretching and were sustained for 24 h. In contrast, swellings along neurites oriented at 45° and 90° transiently increased within 1 h following stretching. Although more ruptures were observed in neurites oriented at 0° and 90° than in those oriented at 45°, the number of neurites and cells did not differ among orientation conditions. These results suggest that the difference in strain along the axon induces axonal injuries differing in type and degree. They also suggest that the strain on the axon, rather than that on the cell-cultured substrate, is important for evaluating neuronal damage. © 2014 The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.

The purpose of this study is development a blood collection assistance system for accident prevention. In the past studies, a vein detection system by using absorbance of the hemoglobin and a needle puncture system by using the peak detection of puncture force and the blood detection by electrode were individually developed. In this study, the each system were integrated to assist the series of blood collection procedure. The needle position was calibrated by using infrared (IR) markers monitored via IR camera. The accuracy of the positioning was within 0.4mm of the error to a blood vessel model of 0.4mm diameter. The blood collection assistance system could perform the series of blood collection procedure such as positioning the needle tip to blood vessel, needle puncturing and stop. © 2014, Japan Soc. of Med. Blood collection is being frequently performed for blood donation and clinical testing. However the skill acquisition is exclusively performed by clinical experience for patients and simulation with an arm model of silicone rubber. However, there are some problems that they are not able to reproduce the individually different of puncture reaction force by age or body habitus, furthermore the risk of accidents or distress to patients. Therefore, we focused on haptic technology that reproduces mechanically the tactile, moreover we have been developing a blood sampling simulator that can reproduce the various reaction force. We obtained the viscoelastic modules of elastic rubber by needle puncture experiment with an elastic rubber, and constructed a reaction force model that considered the changes of the reaction force depending to puncture speed. As the results of simulation depending to the puncture, the behavior of the reaction force due to the puncture speed could be reproduced. © 2014, Japan Soc. of Med. Electronics and Biol. engineering. Experiments involving eye-tracking usually require analysis of large data. While there is a rich landscape of tools to extract information about fixations and saccades from such data, the analysis at a higher level of abstraction (e.g., comparison of visual scanpaths between subjects) is still performed manually. Especially, the comparison of scanpaths derived from dynamic scenarios, where the observer is in permanent interaction with her environment, is highly challenging. In this work we (i) introduce a new work-flow for automated scanpath comparison in dynamic environments, which combines image processing, object tracking, and sequence comparison algorithms, and (ii) provide a new data set for performance evaluation of scanpath comparison methods that was extracted from eye-tracking data during an interactive tea-cooking task, referring to the experiments by Land et al. [1]. Furthermore, to showcase the applicability of our work-flow, we applied our method to the above data set to find differences in visual behavior between several runs for the tea-cooking task.
