We constructed a probabilistic modeling forecast variation of temperature using the time-series analysis based on statistical mechanics. In order to clarify availability of the present method, we estimated time evolution of squared error between predictive data and actual data on environmental factors, such as temperature. Using numerical simulation for climate statistics on temperature, we found that the present method was practically useful method via the mean-field theory of the Ising model to forecast environmental factors, although the accuracy of the present method was just inferior to that of the conventional method.

Question answering generally generates the answer to the question by extracting the named entity from the sentences containing the answer to the question from information sources. However, it is not always true that a named entity is an answer to the question. So we propose a method for generating the answer sentence using statistical machine translation. The probability models are constructed by learning from enormous samples of the set of question sentence, extracted sentence, and answer sentence. The question sentence and the sentence extracted by the question answering from information source are regarded as an input of machine translation. They are translated to a suitable answer sentence to the question. In this paper, we attempted to apply our method to several simple types questions that can also be answered by the named entity extraction.

In recent years, readings on text files become popular. We can use full-text search while we read text-files. However, full-text search has some weak points for supporting readings. We propose to introduce question-answering to readings of novels on text-files to avoid these problems and make a comfortable support system for readings of novels. We also propose several additional functions such as "Who? Function" and "Spoiler preventer". We checked the act of our system with various examples to confirm that our system works correctly in actual reading scenes. We also examined the computational complexity of the system theoretically and experimentally, and found our proposed method does not take a long time so that the user will not feel unpleasant.

We investigated the Bayesian inferences using the maximize a posteriori (MAP) estimation for the problem of phase unwrapping in remote sensing using the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry. Then, in order to clarify performance of the Bayesian inference estimate, we carried out Monte Carlo simulation for a set of wave-fronts generated by an assumed true prior. Then, we clarified that optimal performance was achieved under the Bayes-optimal condition within statistical uncertainty. Then, we clarified that the present method was effective even for an artificial wave-front in remote sensing due to SAR interferometry. Also, we found that the Bayesian inference via the conjugate gradient method to derive the MAP solution for this problem. Using the numerical simulation for the wave-front, we found that the MAP estimation using the conjugate gradient method was effective for phase unwrapping as well as the MPM estimate approximately.

We have investigated several characteristics of the keystroke dynamics in Japanese free text. In the previous studies, it was indicated that authentication accuracy could not achieve the adequate level of personal authentication for the group including lower typing skill participants. In this paper, we propose a new profiling method generating combined profile documents. By performing a large scale experiment involving 260 participants, we found that the method combining two profile documents out of ten profile documents resulted in the recognition accuracy rate of 98 % even in the case for the group including lower typing skill participants who manage to type 500 to 700 letters per 5 minutes.

Diffuse axonal injury (DAI), a major component of traumatic brain injury, is associated with rapid deformation of brain tissue resulting in the stretching of neural axons. Focal axonal swelling, which is the morphological hallmarks of DAI pathology, leads to the disconnection of neurons from tissues, resulting in cell death. Our goal is better understanding of neuronal tolerance and help to predicting the pathogenesis of DAI from mechanical loading to the head. In present study, we developed an in vitro stretch injury device that subjected cultured cells to a wide range of mechanical stretch that are experienced during in vivo head injury. Then using this device, PC12 cells, which extend structurally axon-like cylindrical protrusions in culture, were stretched to a strain of 0.15, 0.30, or 1.00 at strain rates of 30, 40, or 80 s-1, or left as static culture. Following mechanical loading, we assessed neurite swelling resulting in neuronal detachment from culture substrate and neuronal death. As a result, the increase in early neurite swelling was dependent on the severity of the stretch, and neuronal adhesion and viability at 24 h post-injury decrease in a stretch-dependent manner. These results suggest that the formation of neurite swellings correlates with the progression to neuronal death. © 2012 by JSME.

We believe it is extremely important to quickly communicate information - on matters such as the extent of the damage and the safety of affected persons - when a large-scale earthquake or other disaster occurs. However, if electric power is lost, communication will be impossible with existing information networks. For this reason, we have built an Ad-Hoc network in Shiojiri City enabling communication even if electric power is lost due to a large-scale disaster. Using this Ad-Hoc network, we are building a sensor network to forecast landslide disasters. Among the various sensors installed to the sensor terminals, this paper reports in particular on observation results with EC sensors. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

This paper discusses and describes the implementation of a Virtual Learning Laboratory (VLL) for teaching Calculus for engineering courses. The VLL is hosted in the virtual world (or metaverse) OpenSim, which is based on free software derived from the proprietary tool Second Life, widespread in the context of virtual worlds. The purpose of this research consists in the integration of a Learning Object (LO) for teaching Calculus in OpenSim metaverse. This solution offers the student collaborative, interactive and dynamic learning situations environment contributing to increase the motivation and resulting in a better quality of learning. The laboratory is being finalized and thereafter will be submitted to efficiency evaluations of its performance as a teaching tool, as well as the usability of its interfaces.

This paper proposes a knowledge discovery system from annotated time series data, they are expressed as sequences of numerical values. They generally have a lot of important information in background, but it is not included in data. Analysis methods without background information have limitations. Several studies propose meta data approaches, which is often expressed as a short text, the techniques are insufficient for our purpose. We therefore develop a method that uses annotations which are compact expressions of back ground information. Subsequences obtained by using domain knowledge are organized into groups based on a distance measure. Among the groups some of them are identified as important features. In order to measure importance, we develop a method that uses global and local frequencies of subsequences. This idea is similar to the TFIDF method, which is used in text mining. A subsequence that represents an important group is regarded as a feature pattern. In addition, we extract association rules over feature patterns and annotations. We introduce a new concept, called max allowance length, to focus only on influential annotations to a pattern. We demonstrate an effect of the proposed method by using financial data. © 2012 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

Utilization of automatic tagging using web information to datamining

This paper proposes a data annotation system using the automatic tagging approach. Although annotations of data are useful for deep analysis and mining of it, the cost of providing them becomes huge in most of the cases. In order to solve this problem, we develop a semi-automatic method that consists of two stages. In the first stage, it searches the Web space for relating information, and discovers candidates of effective annotations. The second stage uses knowledge of a human user. The candidates are investigated and refined by the user, and then they become annotations. We in this paper focus on time-series data, and show effectiveness of a GUI tool that supports the above process. © 2012 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.
