This work concentrates on proposing a framework to implement the PKI which enables security in XML documents, by defining a common framework and processing rules that can be shared across applications using common tools, avoiding the need for extensive customization of applications to add security. The Framework reuses the concepts, algorithms and core technologies of legacy security systems while introducing changes necessary to support extensible integration with XML. This allows interoperability with a wide range of existing infrastructures and across deployments. Currently no strict security models and mechanisms are available that can provide specification and enforcement of security policies for XML documents. Such models are crucial in order to facilitate a secure dissemination of XML documents, containing information of different sensitivity levels, among (possibly large) user communities.

OFDM-CPM signals for wireless communications

A class of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing-continuous phase modulation (OFDM-CPM) signals is introduced in which the binary data sequence is mapped to complex symbols using the concept of correlated phase states of a CPM signal. A multiple-symbol-observation receiver is used to decode the received sequence, and an investigation of bit error rate over typical wireless multipath channels with additive white Gaussian noise is presented. The performance of a variety of OFDM-CPM signals is presented and analyzed. Performance is a function of parameter h and the observation interval, both of which are at the disposal of the system designer. It is shown that OFDM-CPM is a promising signalling scheme in multipath fading channels. Results for multi-h and asymmetric OFDM-CPM signals are also presented. The peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) performance of these signals is also presented, and an algorithm to reduce PAPR is proposed that is based on a multi-amplitude CPM constellation. It is shown through numerical simulations that the proposed algorithm reduces the PAPR of a 128-carrier OFDM-CPM signal by more than 4 dB.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an increasingly popular treatment modality for Parkinson's disease (PD) based on chronic electrical stimulation of the basal ganglia. The basal ganglia are responsible for regulating motor control of the human body, a function exemplified by disease states such as PD. We describe a novel technique based on a chronically implantable neural prosthetic device that could be used as a potential treatment in many basal ganglia disorders, including PD. The prosthetic device implements a fuzzy control of the baseline excitation of the motor cortex and derives a feedback loop from the thalamocortical pathway, thus forming a closed loop control. It improves over DBS by being self-adjustable, thereby eradicating the need of repeated adjustments of various parameters of the excitatory signal(s). The neural prosthetic device can be implanted in a rat brain and the fuzzy control rule set be derived from in vitro organotypic slice culture models of the basal ganglia.

An analysis of IP-based protocols and mechanisms to support host mobility throughout the Internet is going to be performed in this paper. The mobile nodes are identified by its home address, regardless of its current point of attachment. When away from its home the mobile node gets associated with a care-of-address. This is the mechanism provided by Mobile IP. Mobile IP is well suited for Macro-mobility by it suffers delays when performing micro-mobility. Due to the shortcomings in Mobile IP another mobility management protocol has been proposed, called Micro-Mobile IP. It considers paging which is not taken into account by Mobile IP and the regional registration draft presented by the IETF. A signaling cost analysis is presented in order to justify and prove the enhancements needed in Mobile IP. It will be show through simulations the protocol's weaknesses and possible improvements.

The World is moving towards ubiquitous deployment of Internet. Virtual Private Networking technology provides the medium to use the public Internet backbone as an appropriate channel for private data communication. BY replacing expensive private network bandwidth with relatively low-cost bandwidth, much of the remote communications burden is transferred over to ISP's. A multilayer technology, MPLS offers an alternative tunneling rnechanism for implementing IP VPN's. MPLS combines the performance of Layer 2 switching with Layer 3 routing to provide scalable and flexible architecture for building VPN's. Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) represents the next level of standards-based evolution in combining layer 2 (data link layer) switching technologies with lover 3 (network layer) routing technologies. The primary objective of this standardization process is to create a flexible networking fabric that provides increased performance and scalability. This includes traffic-engineering capabilities, which provide, for example, aspects of Quality of Service (QoS) and facilitate the use of Virtual Private Networks. This paper covers the general idea OWLS in VPN's, plus it also covers the quantitative analysis of Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) in VPN's.

Today medical equipment is so complex and the choice is so extensive that the hospitals are now forced to pay dose attention to the management of the medical equipment technology. The technology management is an accountability, systematic approach to assuring that cost effective, efficacious, safe and appropriate equipment is available to meet the demands of quality patient care. This trend has made the role of Bio-medical engineers crucially important and recognizable. The Bio-medical engineer is not only responsible for maintenance and service but also for the pre-purchase technical evaluation and appraisals, users education and training, timely replacement and risk management of the equipment and systems. The bio-medical engineer as such contributes to a hospital's efficiency and to effective and high quality patient care by closely working with clinical staff, chief medical officers, department heads and administrators.

Among the waste materials of steel manufacture slag from the blast furnace of Pakistan steel is an important product whose utilization deserves serious contemplation of scientists and engineers in Pakistan. Some work has been done on its suitability in cement manufacture in Pakistan [1]. However the fitness of Boulder slag as subbase in pavement material is yet to be investigated experimentally. This paper presents the results of experimental investigation of Boulder slag and its appraisal as a potential subbase construction material. A comparative study between various quarries of a course aggregate used in highway construction material within Sindh province of Pakistan (figure 1) and the Boulder slag is also given in this paper.

The work investigates a set of efficient methods to extract important features from the ECG data applicable in the localization of cardiac arrhythmia. The work involves the segmentation of the ECG signal and the extraction of important features like QRS and ST segments. Further classification follows the learning process where the SOM (Self Organizing Maps) units organize in such a way that similar map sequences of the ECG data are represented in particular areas of the SOM. Eventual unsupervised learning (UL) time traces are achieved during the training and forwarded to the LVQ (Learning Vector Quantization). Here a set of supervised learning (SL) is followed by a smart beat detection system that further enhances the signal performance and correct localization for arrhythmia detection.
