Many numerical electromagnetic modeling techniques that work very well at high frequencies do not work well at lower frequencies. This is directly or indirectly due to the weak coupling between the electric and magnetic fields at low frequencies. One technique for improving the performance of boundary element techniques at low frequencies is through the use of loop-tree basis functions, which decouple the contributions from the vector and scalar electric potential. However, loop-tree basis functions can be difficult to define for large, complex geometries. This paper describes a new method for improving the low-frequency performance of boundary element techniques. The proposed method does not require special basis functions and is relatively easy to implement. Numerical errors introduced by the great difference in scale between the vector and scalar electric potential are corrected automatically during the LU decomposition of the impedance matrix.

A complete analytical solution to one-shot load balancing in a two-node distributed system is presented and verified experimentally. The model takes into account uncertainty in network delays and the variability in the processors speeds. The system consisting of two Transmeta processors connected through a wireless LAN, utilizing an 802.11b access point, is used as the testbed. The statistics of the network delays are estimated experimentally and used in the analytical model to show the effect of the balancing instant and gain on the overall completion times of various workloads. The analytical results are verified by comparing them to actual experiments and Monte-Carlo simulation. The effect of the communication delay on the choice of the gain and the balancing instant is clearly observed. Finally, the model is used to determine the optimal gain and balancing instant for different initial load distributions.

An efficient yet accurate model for determining the power consumption of mux-based crossbar interconnects is presented. First, an analytical model for the power consumption of a cell in the crossbar interconnect is introduced. The model is based on the modified n-th power law which is suitable for short channel MOSFET I-V characteristics. Using the cell model, as well as input and control signals, an analytical expression for the power consumption of the whole interconnect is presented. The proposed model is compact and scalable making it suitable for power estimation CAD tools. The results of the proposed model for a current and predictive CMOS technology show an excellent accuracy in comparison with the results of HSPICE simulations.

This paper describes a novel sequential wavelength-time-space (sWTS) scheduling algorithm to solve the arbitration problem in an all-optical packet switch router and shows the simulation as well as the hardware implementation results. The simulation results with self-similar traffic input demonstrate that the sWTS arbitration algorithm effectively improves the packet blocking rate, forwarding latency and jitter as the number of wavelength channels per port and the number of recirculation buffer ports in the switch fabric increase. The proposed algorithm further facilitates a very fast and hardware-efficient mixed-tree output port arbiter design. The hardware implementation is evaluated in terms of area and delay for various switch sizes with both the Xilinx XCV1000E FPGA and a 0.25-micron commercial ASIC library.

Longest prefix matching is frequently used for IP forwarding in the Internet. Data structures used must be not only efficient, hut also robust against pathological entries caused by an adversary or misconfiguration. In this paper, we attack the longest prefix matching problem by presenting a new algorithm supporting high lookup performance, fast incremental updates and guaranteed compression ratio. High lookup performance is achieved by using only four memory accesses. Guaranteed compression ratio is achieved by combining direct indexing with an implicit tree structure and carefully choosing which construct to use when updating the forwarding table. Fast incremental updates are achieved by a new memory management technique featuring fast variable size allocation and deallocation while maintaining zero fragmentation. An IPv4 forwarding table data structure can be implemented in software or hardware within 2.7 Mb of memory to represent 2/sup 18/ routing entries. Incremental updates require only 752 memory accesses in worst case for the current guaranteed compression ratio. For a hardware implementation, we can use 300 MHz SRAM organized in four memory banks and four pipeline stages to achieve a guaranteed performance of 300 million lookups per second, corresponding to /spl sim/ 100 Gbit/s wire speed forwarding, and 400,000 incremental updates per second. In measurements performed on a 3.0 GHz Pentium 4 machine using a routing table with more than 2/sup 17/ entries, we can forward over 27 million IPv4 packets per second, which is equivalent to wire speeds exceeding 10 Gbit/s. On the same machine and with the same routing table, we can perform over 230,000 incremental updates/second.

Hyperthreaded (HT) and simultaneous multithreaded (SMT) processors are now available in commodity workstations and servers. This technology is designed to increase throughput by executing multiple concurrent threads on a single physical processor. These multiple threads share the processor's functional units and on-chip memory hierarchy in an attempt to make better use of idle resources. Most OpenMP applications have been written assuming an symmetric multiprocessor (SMP), not an SMT, model. Threads executing on the same physical processor have interactions on data locality and resource sharing that do not occur on traditional SMPs. This work focuses on tuning the behavior of OpenMP applications executing on SMPs with SMT processors. We propose two adaptive loop schedulers that determine effective hierarchical schedulers for individual parallel loops. We compare the performance of our two proposed schedulers against several standard schedulers and the per-region adaptive scheduler proposed by Zhang et al. using the SPEC and NAS OpenMP benchmark suites. We show that both of our proposed schedulers outperform all other schedulers on average, and increase speedup on average by over 25% when all thread contexts are used.

In direct-sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems, performances are limited by multiple access interference (MAI). To mitigate this effect and hence provide a significant increase in capacity and allow high data rates, multiuser detection (MUD) techniques are used. The main drawback of such receivers is the increase in complexity when compared to the conventional receiver based on the Rake receiver. The multistage parallel interference cancellation (MPIC) receiver is considered a serious candidate for practical implementation showing a good tradeoff between performance and complexity. However, in order to satisfy the performances of the third generation systems, it is important to use MPIC with decision feedback (DF). The parallel implementation of the DF-MPIC is no longer straightforward. Hence, a new pipeline architecture of the DF-MPIC is proposed in this paper

We investigated the effects of electrodes, i.e. Al plate, semiconducting (SC) layer and evaporated Al, on space charge in polypropylene (PP) by using the pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) method and also on conduction current. Evaporated Al electrodes suppressed the carrier injection and, as a result, space charge compared with Al plate or SC layer (mechanically contacted electrode). The conduction current also revealed that the carrier injection was suppressed by evaporated Al. The space charge formation and the current showed a significant dependence on not only electrode material but also contact condition between metallic electrode and insulator.
