Aliasing artifacts in images are visually very disturbing. Therefore, most imaging devices apply a low-pass filter before sampling. This removes all aliasing from the image, but it also creates a blurred image. Actually, all the image information above half the sampling frequency is removed. In this paper, we present a new method for the reconstruction of a high resolution image from a set of highly undersampled and thus aliased images. We use the information in the entire frequency spectrum, including the aliased part, to create a sharp, high resolution image. The unknown relative shifts between the images are comput.d using a subspace projection approach. We show that the projection can be decomposed into multiple projections onto smaller subspaces. This allows for a considerable reduction of the overall comput.tional complexity of the algorithm. A high resolution image can then be reconstructed from the registered low resolution images. Simulation results show the validity of our algorithm.

We have developed an image analysis system for scoring yeast growth and color development in images of 96-well plates, a common format for high throughput assays. We use a segmentation method to locate the plates and spots. Color histogram and wavelet features are extracted respectively from spots of X-Gal and -leu plates. Two artificial neural networks are separately employed to score spots on each plate. The performance of the system is evaluated using a data set of 50 images. The data set was divided into 25 training and 25 testing images. Accuracies of 99.7% and 95.2% have been achieved for scoring the X-Gal and -leu plates respectively.

The International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS) emphasizes on the need for reliable, high speed interconnects for the future technology generations. Innovative materials are being extensively studied and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have emerged as a promising material for future generation ICs. Recent experiments have shown that CNTs can handle extremely high current densities (/spl sim/10/sup 10/ A/cm/sup 2/) for hours without significant degradation of performance. In this paper we have developed a comprehensive RLC transmission line model for metallic CNTs (Burke, 2002), and evaluated their performance in high speed VLSI design.

In this paper, the feeding characteristics of a coplanar patch antenna (CPA) fed at the nonradiating edge (NRE) are discussed. Specifically, the variation of input impedance with the feed location along the NRE has been studied. From these studies, the optimal feed location at the NRE has been obtained for matching the CPA to a 50 /spl Omega/ coplanar waveguide (CPW) feed line. The return loss of the fabricated antenna was measured to be 32 dB at the resonant frequency of 3.575 GHz. Design, simulation and measurements of this antenna are discussed here.

A central feature of mobile wireless networks is the random fading of the channel strengths of the underlying communication links. Traditionally, fading on wireless channels has been viewed as a form of unreliability that must be mitigated in order to achieve reliable data transfer. A new design principle, known as multiuser diversity, rather harnesses the randomness of this fading in a multiuser environment to improve the performance of the overall system. We develop tractable mathematical models for evaluating the average delay, throughput and symbol error probability (SEP) performances of multiuser diversity systems in MIMO channels. Analytical comparisons with the performances of a conventional round-robin scheme like TDMA are then made. Our results show that with multiuser diversity, there is significant reduction in the average delay that user data packets experience in the network, compared to the TDMA system. It is also observed that throughput and SEP performance for a multiuser diversity system improve as the number of users in the cell increase.

Receiving large number of data packets at different baud rates and different sizes at gateways in very high-speed network routers may lead to a congestion problem and force them to drop some packets. Several algorithms have been developed to control this problem. A random early detection (RED) algorithm is commonly used. In this work, we present an FPGA implementation of a modified version of RED able to run as fast as 10 Gbps. Furthermore, we discuss three enhancements of the RED algorithm leading a better performance suitable for FPGA implementation.

Unmanned vehicles are used to explore physical areas where humans are unable to go due to different constraints. There have been various algorithms that have been used to perform this task. This paper explores swarm intelligence for searching a given problem space for a particular target(s). The work in this paper has two parts. In the first part, a set of randomized unmanned vehicles are deployed to locate a single target. In the second part, the randomized unmanned vehicles are deployed to locate various targets and are then converged at one of targets of a particular interest. Each of the targets carries transmits some information which draws the attention of the randomized unmanned vehicles to the target of interest. The Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) has been applied for solving this problem. Results have shown that the PSO algorithm converges the unmanned vehicles to the target of particular interest successfully and quickly.

This paper presents an implementation of built-in self-test (BIST) design of motion estimation (ME) comput.ng array, which is the main part of MPEG-2 video encoder. The goal of the design is to offer high reliability for the coding system. Our design is carried out on gate level in both VHDL and Verilog HDL and then synthesized into FPGA. Design verification is also performed using logic simulation and fault simulation.

A phase shifter based on coplanar waveguide transmission lines has been used to characterize the microwave properties of Ba/sub 0.5/Sr/sub 0.5/TiO/sub 3/ thin films over a wideband frequency range (45 MHz-50 GHz). Films with tunability of /spl sim/45% dielectric permittivity of /spl sim/1000 and tan /spl delta/ < 0.005 were obtained after optimization of the deposition processes. A phase shift of /spl sim/220/spl deg/ at 40 GHz has been achieved along 5250 /spl mu/m lines with a dc-bias voltage as small as 70 V (producing 2.8 kV cm/sup -1/), with an insertion loss of 8 dB. Selected structural properties of the films were compared with the microwave properties.
