Summary form only given. There has been considerable research on quantum cellular automata (QCA) as a new comput.ng scheme in the nanoscale regimes. A detailed simulation-based characterization of defects in different QCA logic and interconnect devices and study of their effects at logic-level are presented. Various failure mechanisms which can potentially happen during nanomannfacturing of these devices have been considered and simulated. Different implementations of QCA logic devices and interconnects are also compared in term of defect tolerance and testability. The same study is performed for new proposed QCA devices too. The simulation results show that additional fault models at logic level must be considered for testing of QCA-based circuits.

In this paper, two techniques are presented for in-situ calibration of an electric-field probe, in our case an asymptotic conical dipole. The first technique uses a parallel-plate probe as a reference, and measurements are performed using a spectrum analyzer. In the second technique, a network analyzer is employed to measure the two-port scattering parameters of the GTEM cell (apex of the cell) and the probe, which is installed on the floor of the cell. The antenna factor is extracted from the transmission coefficient. Measurements for both techniques are carried out in a GTEM cell. The effect of a nearby EUT on the antenna factor is investigated.

Accurate simulation of plasmas often requires a solution of the kinetic equation, either directly by solving the Boltzmann Equation (BE) or indirectly by means of 'particle' simulations. However, kinetic simulations are still too comput.tionally intensive for many large 3-D simulations. In this work we examine the matching between a kinetic simulation and fluid models which are used in conjunction to form a 'hybrid' plasma model of the breakdown process. The kinetic model is tested for convergence with respect to mesh size, /spl Delta/x, and time step, /spl Delta/t. We then implement fluid models in an attempt to reproduce the results of the kinetic mode. To do this it is necessary to have a fluid model which provides accurate simulations with a wide range of /spl Delta/x and /spl Delta/t. We accomplish this by means of a propagator (or Green's function) approach. The propagator method reduces to a finite difference scheme at small /spl Delta/x and /spl Delta/t and gives correct results across a wide range of parameters. For intermediate /spl Delta/x, /spl Delta/t, it is necessary to take considerable care to derive the correct propagator. We apply the propagator in two forms, one of which explicitly conserves energy locally and exactly, and show that the details of the fluid model employed make a profound difference to the predicted breakdown. The breakdown phase of dielectric barrier discharge of Nitrogen at atmospheric pressure is simulated by employing an energy conserving fluid scheme.

Summary form only given. This panel summary addresses generation expansion and network upgrades in distribution systems. Specifically, as load levels increase and increased reliability is required for select customers, the installation of distributed generation may be used to address these challenges. The careful placement of distributed generators (DG) may allow for system capacity release within the distribution network and the deferral of equipment upgrades and new construction. In addition, distributed generators will directly affect load changes experienced by transmission systems and their subsequent expansion planning requirements. Another consideration in distribution systems is that, currently, the reliability of the distribution system is highly dependent on the transmission system. It is envisioned that allowing DGs to operate during distribution system outages, caused by both distribution and transmission system faults, would lessen this dependency. In order to achieve this, network enhancements, e.g. switch placements, must be made. Specifically, we present a cost-based problem formulation which may be readily used by intelligent system methods to quantify the effects of DG placements on distribution systems under load increases and distribution faults. We formulate the distributed generator placement problem as a non-differentiable optimization problem subject to electrical, operational and network constraints. In the objective function, we consider the following factors: wheeling costs, DG operating costs, DG installation costs, network upgrade costs and outage costs. Here, we consider the possibility of allowing a DG to support an isolated area during system outages and the network switch upgrades required to enable loads to be supported.

In this paper, we propose an integrated call admission control (CAC) and packet scheduling scheme for multimedia direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) wireless networks. The proposed scheme fully utilizes the non-real-time characteristics of packet data to achieve quality-of-service (QoS) support in DS-CDMA wireless networks. Control of traffic flow is done at both the call and packet levels. The admission control restricts the number of calls in the system such that all traffic can meet their QoS requirements. Packet scheduling balances the flows of real time calls and non-real time calls to reduce the system interference. We evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme using Markov analysis and queuing theory. The analytic results are validated by simulation results. The numerical results show that the proposed scheme provides better performance than those of previous work.

In this paper, a 3D tri-gate SOI FET with a wrap around gate geometry is studied using a full-band particle-based simulation tool as stated in M. Saraniti et al. (1999) Tri-gate FETs show superior scalability over planar device structures, including a reduction of short channel effects based on F. Yang et al. (2002). The 3D gate structure of the tri-gate FET not only plays a role in reducing DIBL by shielding the electric field lines from the drain, but also improves gate-channel controllability.

The design of power efficient receivers for Bluetooth systems is a challenging task due to stringent complexity constraints. We tackle this problem and present a novel receiver consisting of a single filter and a subsequent sequence detector. This receiver outperforms the conventional discriminator detector by more than 4 dB for typical Bluetooth channels. Thereby, the proposed sequence detection (SD) algorithm is of favorable low complexity, as it operates on a two-state trellis, and is highly robust against channel phase variations caused by low-cost local oscillators. Different from previously published work on SD, we take possible variations of the Bluetooth modulation parameters into account. Hence, the presented receiver design is an attractive solution for practical Bluetooth devices.

In a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), an interior permanent magnet (Nd-Fe-B) synchronous motor is widely used. However, the flux density of the Nd-Fe-B magnet is sensitive to the temperature variation. Particularly, in a HEV, the heat coming from internal combustion engine causes high temperature rise of the motor. It degrades the flux density and output torque. In this paper, a maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) control scheme for IPM motor is proposed considering the temperature dependence of the magnet field. With the use of an empirical look-up table, saturation effect is also considered. The effectiveness of the proposed control method is demonstrated through MATLAB/Simulink simulation and experiment.
