We report device performance investigation of 4H-SiC avalanche photodiodes (APDs) with or without absorbing AlGaN cap layers, as 4H-SiCspsila potential use in single photon counter APDs have drawn interest. Wide bandgap 4H-SiC photodiodes have low dark current levels at high temperatures and under intense radiation compared to silicon, and the 4H-SiC APDs are ldquosolar blindrdquo - transparent to the sunpsilas visible spectrum. Additionally, they offer avalanche multiplications approaching a million, making single photon count possible. However, design and optimization of single photon counter APDs require a thorough understanding of impact ionization and optical absorption at the material level, and steady-state and transient APD operation at the device level. Here we address both of these levels.

Handheld electrolarynx is a popular device used to produce voice by laryngectomized patients. A switching capacitor CMOS based device for hands free electrolarynx activation using electromyographic signals, is proposed. The prototype intends to give laryngectomized patients an option to produce voice in a more comfortable and natural way. The prototype is designed to be implanted as a low voltage microchip for automatic activation of any electrolarynx by using the myoelectric signals exhibited by muscles. The prototype system exhibits an excellent simulated performance from the bioamplifier through the activation microcontroller using a simulated electromyographic signal.

In this paper, a 3D virtual interface and its corresponding physical testbed are introduced. The physical testbed named distributed embedded intelligence room (DEIR) realises a true ubiquitous intelligent environment by embedding sensors, actuators and comput.ng devices and providing means of communication through various device networks. With the support of multi-agent control system, the 3D virtual interface is able to act both like a remote control interface or virtual simulator of the room. The 3D virtual interface has demonstrated the ability to perform real-time operations from remote locations and to facilitate research progress by allowing virtual simulations.

We present a mathematical model for describing the relationship between overhead and error reduction under single-error conditions in combinational logic using N-modular redundancy (NMR) as an upper bound. We then provide an analysis for the model under more realistic circuit and overhead assumptions. We compare system, sub-circuit, and gate level NMR. Based on our results, implementing NMR at the gate level offers the benefits of NMR with customizable overheads but with reduced effectiveness when compared to system level implementations

Prediction of common secondary structure across multiple RNA sequences is known to significantly increase accuracy in comparison with single-sequence based prediction methods. However, the comput.tional requirements for joint prediction can often be daunting in comparison to single-sequence prediction. As a result, heuristic simplifications are often necessary for this joint estimation problem in order to perform comput.tions on current hardware in reasonable times. In this paper, principled heuristics are presented for the purpose of comput.tion reduction based on probabilistic methods. The methods presented eliminate the comput.tions over extremely improbable alignments and structures, thereby reducing comput.tion with little or no degradation in accuracy. Experimental results over databases of RNA families with known secondary structure validate our methods, demonstrating over a two-fold comput.tional speed up in tests over the 5 S rRNA family, without any compromise in accuracy.

In communication networks, multiple communication paths sharing minimum number of links or/and nodes may be desirable for improved performance, resource utilization and reliability. We introduce the notion of link sharability and node sharability, and consider the problems of finding minimum-cost k paths subject to minimum link/node sharability constraints. We identify 65 different link/node sharability constraints, and consider the fundamental problem of finding minimum-cost k paths between a pair of nodes under these constraints. We present a unified polynomial-time algorithm scheme for solving this problem subject to 25 of these different sharability constraints.

This paper presents an experimental comparison of position tracking controllers for a five degree-of-freedom active magnetic bearing system. Two variations of a nonlinear design are presented, each subject to a different actuating constraint: constant current sum (CCS) uses bias currents and current almost complementary (CAC) avoids bias currents. While both designs achieve accurate tracking for a non-rotating shaft, a comparison of unbalance responses show that voltage saturation can limit the dynamic response of the CAC-based design. Performance of the nonlinear designs is also compared to a decentralized PID controller

In previous work, we proposed a Poisson statistical model for gated PET data in which the distribution was parametrized in terms of both image intensity and motion parameters. The motion parameters related the activity image in each gate to that of a base image in some fixed gate. By doing maximum loglikelihood (ML) estimation of all parameters simultaneously, one obtains an estimate of the base gate image that exploits the full set of measured sinogram data. Previously, this joint ML approach was compared, in a highly simplified single-slice setting, to more conventional methods. Performance was measured in terms of the recovery of tracer uptake in a synthetic lung nodule. This paper reports the extension to 3D with much more realistic simulated motion. Furthermore, in addition to pure ML estimation, we consider the use of side information from a breath-hold CT scan to facilitate regularization, while preserving hot lesions of the kind seen in FDG oncology studies

This paper presents the mathematical formulation, the physical interpretation, and the implementation of a new controller for the resonant based 4W voltage regulator module (VRM). The new controller is named as "self-sustained oscillation control (SSOC)" and is used to achieve the specifications of the future voltage VRMs as per the requirements of the International Technology and Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS) (***). It is a new current mode controller for resonant converter, hence offers lower power component ratings than with the conventional variable frequency controller and fast transient response as well as a reasonable efficiency. Analytical, simulation and experimental results are presented to offer the proof of concept.
