This paper describes a method to determine three dimensional (3D) segmentation of a mouse left ventricle over time. The temporal varying 3D data consist of elevationally interpolating a temporal sequence of two dimensional (2D) short axis ultrasound slices. The gradient vector flow active surface is used to determine a 3D surface of the LV. The initial approximation of the gradient vector flow active surface is attained by temporally propagating the final surface from the previous time instance. An inherent problem with temporal propagation is that parts of two distinct surfaces in close proximity tend to converge to the same spatial location. We propose to embed a model correction method into the 4D segmentation algorithm to alleviate this problem

Assembly of large genomes from tens of millions of short genomic fragments is comput.tionally demanding requiring hundreds of gigabytes of memory and tens of thousands of CPU hours. New gene-enrichment sequencing strategies are expected to further exacerbate this situation. In this paper, we present a massively parallel genome assembly framework. The unique features of our approach include space-efficient and on-demand algorithms that consume only linear space, and heuristic strategies that reduce the number of expensive pairwise sequence alignments while maintaining assembly quality. As part of the ongoing efforts in maize genome sequencing, we applied our assembly framework to the largest available collection of maize genomic data. We report the partitioning of more than 1.6 million fragments of over 1.25 billion nucleotides total size into genomic islands in 2 hours on 1,024 processors of an IBM BlueGene/L supercomputer.

Field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) are becoming increasingly attractive as comput.tion engines: they are currently being integrated into supercomputers as application accelerators. In order for widespread use of FPGA-based accelerators to be practical, however, design tools must resolve a number of conflicting needs: application-specific tuning versus wide applicability, stability of software investment versus use of the most recent and powerful acceleration hardware, and customization of complex comput.ng structures by end users who lack logic design skills. We describe how the LAMP tools address these conflicts and report performance results from experiments in creating families of application accelerators.

This paper investigates the hardware and architecture requirements for an OFDM adaptive modulation system. The hardware modules for a baseband adaptive uncoded OFDM transmitter, receiver and feedback link have been implemented on an FPGA. This system is used for fast hardware-in-the-loop simulation when combined with the implementation of a wireless channel model. It is also demonstrated that one high-end FPGA chip can provide all the resources necessary for the implementation of the system.

Segmentation of the tumor in neuroblastoma is complicated by the fact that the mass is almost always heterogeneous in nature. In this, paper, we propose to use deformable models to determine the tumor boundary on a slice-by-slice basis. The initial contour for the model is obtained from the convex hull of the thresholded result obtained by the application of opening by reconstruction to the original comput.d tomography data. For calcified tumors, the proposed method worked well; however, for diffuse tumors, the method resulted in under-estimated tumor regions.

Surface-micromachined resonators and filters are attractive for many RF applications. While existing simulation tools allow designers to comput. resonant frequencies, few tools provide estimates of the damping in these devices. This paper reports on a new tool that allows designers, for the first time, to comput. anchor losses in high-frequency resonators and account for sub-surface scatterers. By exercising the tool on a family of radially driven disk resonators, we show that the anchor loss mechanism for this class of devices involves a parasitic mixed-mode bending action that pumps energy into the substrate. Further, using the tool, we predict a large variation in resonator quality depending upon film thickness. Our simulation shows that the source of this variation is a complex radial-to-bending motion interaction, which we visualize with a root-locus diagram. We experimentally verify this predicted sensitivity using poly-SiGe disk resonators having Q's ranging from 200 to 54,000.

In 802.11 infrastructure mode some stations that are located far away from an access point may face signal fading and interference. In this case, the wireless station changes its data rate to some lower value. In 802.11b protocol, wireless stations can operate at data rates 11, 5.5, 2 and 1 Mbps. From the literature and our simulation we found that when some wireless stations use a lower data rate than others, the performance of all stations is degraded. The throughput of all wireless stations, including fast and slow, ones is decreased to the order of magnitude of the slow station. This is due to the CSMA/CA channel access method used in 802.11, which guarantees that the long term channel access probability is equal for all wireless stations. In this paper, we propose a solution that avoids slow stations from penalizing other ones transmitting at higher rates. The solution is based on using frames of different sizes according to the link data rate.

VLSI circuit partitioning is an important step in the physical design of integrated circuits. In VLSI partitioning, a circuit is partitioned into smaller relatively independent sub-circuits. In this paper we present an eigenvalue based multilevel partitioning algorithm. The proposed method uses a matrix reordering technique to produce a minimal bandwidth matrix, relying upon matrix sparsity. The reordering technique is applied to the connectivity matrix of a clustered circuit and the matrix connectivity information is obtained. This connectivity information is used to partition the circuit. The experimental results demonstrate the technique's effectiveness against flat partitioning algorithms.

Speech spectral continuity is important in speech perception. We explore in this paper, the use of matrix quantization (MQ) to model spectral contours and impose time continuity in presence of noise. It is found that contours fitted over an optimum duration of 90-100 msec greatly improve speech quality. We show that Wiener filters derived from spectral contour matrices must operate in a time-varying manner and also propose a technique to achieve it through interpolation and STFT based reconstruction. In addition to conventional spectral distortion measures, we compare spectral transition measure profiles of clean and enhanced speech which indicate that MQ codebooks combined with time-varying Wiener filtering improve speech enhancement even at 0 dB SNR.

We present a novel scheme for the transmission of H.264/AVC video streams over packet loss networks. The proposed scheme exploits the error resilient features of H.264/AVC codec and employs Reed-Solomon codes to protect effectively the streams. A novel technique for adaptive classification of macroblocks into three slice groups using Flexible Macroblock Ordering is also proposed. The optimal classification of macroblocks and the optimal channel rate allocation are achieved by iterating two interdependent steps by means of dynamic programming techniques. Simulations clearly demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over other recent algorithms for transmission of H.264/AVC streams.
