Design and fabrication of spiral bi-metal structures appropriate for the realization of miniaturized out-of-plane on-chip antennas is reported. The fabricated antenna whose feeding waveguide is of CPW type can be employed in millimeter-wave antenna arrays. The spiral shape of the structure lends itself for free suspension through the inherent structural stress, assisted by thermal activation. Numerical simulations of the fabricated antenna indicate wide bandwidth, high return loss, and nearly omni-directional pattern at millimeter-wave frequencies.

A fast-low-complexity maximum-likelihood multiuser detector for code division multiple access systems is proposed. It utilizes a best-first branch and bound approach and a constrained memory search. The memory constraint makes the proposed detector realizable, but has negligible performance loss in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and virtually no performance loss in medium-to-high SNR. The results show that the proposed algorithm is much less complex, and that it executes faster than existing maximum likelihood detectors. In addition, the proposed method is suitable for parallel implementation.

In this paper, we investigate a combined source-channel diversity scheme for image transmission through wireless channels with flat fading and noise. The proposed scheme combines the multiple descriptor coding (MDC) and space-time block coding (STBC) techniques to achieve diversity at both source and channel. In the proposed scheme, the input image is coded using multiple descriptor transform coding (MDTC) approach and transmitted using multiple transmit and receive antennas (two transmit antennas and one receive antenna). The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated and compared to the single descriptor scheme. Experimental results indicate that there is an overall improvement in the end-to-end system performance.

Motivated by data value locality and quality tolerance present in multimedia applications, we propose a new micro-architecture, region-level approximate comput.tion buffer (RACB), to reduce power consumption in such applications. The proposed RACB relaxes the exact matching into partial and approximate tag matching and applies it to regions of code in a program, thereby allowing for aggressive comput.tion/execution reduction, in addition to reductions in memory accesses and pipeline activities. Our experiments demonstrate that a 64-entry RACB can yield up to 70% of region-level execution reduction without noticeable quality degradation in MPEG-2 video decoding, corresponding to 55.9% of system power savings with respect to the regions.

This paper described the concept of a probe array for the measurement of biological properties and showed the implementation of a novel probe array for the biological measurement using MEMS technology. We experimentally show the feasibility of the micromachined probe array for biological application through this work. Many researchers have performed the dielectric measurement of liquids or biological samples using a single probe which is manufactured by laser machining. They should perform repetitive experiments point by point to obtain the biological properties of multiple points using a single probe. Moreover the size of single probe and Subminiature A (SMA) connector, which is connected with probe and test cable of network analyzer, are limited and the cost of probe and connector are very high. However, we could obtain the biological information of multiple points by one contact with a sample using the micromachined probe array at a time. Also we can reduce the size and cost of probe using wafer level process.

In this work, the problem of power plant expansion for electricity generation under risk from demand uncertainty and supply is addressed. We begin with a deterministic model. Then, this model is expanded to a stochastic model by means of considering the various demands for different operation modes as random. After this model is analyzed, a way of quantifying risk using the value at risk methodology (VaR) is proposed. The last model presented is such that randomness in the availability factors is considered. The concepts of expected value of perfect information (EVPI) and value of stochastic solution (VSS) are also studied. The models presented are based on an extended form of the well known stochastic programming and chance constrained programming.

Virtual private LAN services (VPLS) is a new layer 2 (L2) virtual private network (VPN), which allows connection of multipoint customers at the same time. Multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) technology is the most popular candidate for implementing VPLS because it supports traffic engineering (TE) functionality over the established label switching paths (LSP). However, MPLS's TE support is provided over point-to-point (P2P) LSPs. The functionality and signaling of point to multipoint (P2MP) LSPs are not supported in existing MPLS architecture. In this paper, we propose a new on line distributed routing algorithm for supporting QoS bandwidth flow guarantees. The algorithm provides TE functionality over the P2MP VPLS connections in the core MPLS networks. The on-line distributed routing algorithm maximizes the number of admitted requests by avoiding the critical links of other source-destinations sets. The critical links are identified based on the number of times the link is used to route the source-destinations set traffic and the load over the links. The algorithm does not assume any a priori knowledge of the network traffic. The proposed algorithm performance is compared to some existing algorithms such as the widest shortest path (WSP) and the Plotkin algorithms. It shows that it outperforms both algorithms by having lower blocking probability.
