The paper investigates, for site-specific indoor scenarios, the attainable improvement of the MIMO capacity by using one or more radio frequency (RF) adaptive techniques. For a scenario-specific (4,4) MIMO system in a corridor, we predict the channel matrix between the transmit and receive ports through image ray tracing (IRT) simulations. We show results for different orientations of transmit/receive arrays and for various positions of the receive array. We demonstrate the dependence of the predicted MIMO capacity on the site-specific scenario over a range of receive end locations. In various specific situations, adaptive techniques can enhance capacity only to a certain extent depending on the original channel matrix. The normalized singular values demonstrate that the capacity enhancement is due to better use of the eigen channels. Combining more than one adaptive technique does not provide further capacity improvement.

We present a novel detection method using constrained independent component analysis (c-ICA). We derive a constrained version of the Infomax algorithm and show that a decision can be made on the existence of a certain component in a given mixture by defining a suitable measure of closeness. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method in Raman spectroscopy for detection of surface-deposited chemical agents.

This paper illustrates how networking protocols can inadvertently exacerbate obstacles to providing real-time guarantees for distributed problem solving in wireless mobile and sensor networks. We analyze the effects of control packet timing on providing quality of service guarantees. Inappropriate timing of control packets gives rise to synchronizations that result in sharp increases and decreases in throughput with small changes in node speed. Such synchronizations can seriously jeopardize network performance with direct effect on real-time guarantees. This paper introduces these synchronizations, analyzes them and suggests ways to modify the control packet timing to overcome them. These analyses include investigating the role of buffering at the network layer and its impact on network throughput. We analyze these effects and evaluate our protocol enhancements through simulation studies.

Statistical methods for tomographic image reconstruction lead to improved spatial resolution and noise properties in PET. Penalized-likelihood (PL) image reconstruction methods involve maximizing an objective function that is based on the log-likelihood of the sinogram measurements and on a roughness penalty function to control noise. In emission tomography, PL methods (and MAP methods) based on conventional quadratic regularization functions lead to nonuniform and anisotropic spatial resolution, even for idealized shift-invariant imaging systems. We have previously addressed this problem for parallel-beam 2D emission tomography, and for fan-beam 2D transmission tomography by designing data-dependent, shift-variant regularizers that improve resolution uniformity and isotropy, even for idealized shift-invariant imaging systems. This paper extends those methods to 3D cylindrical PET, using an analytical design approach that is numerically efficient.

Adaptive infinite impulse response (IIR) or recursive filters are less attractive mainly because of the stability and the difficulties associated with their adaptive algorithms. Hyperstability is a concept from nonlinear stability theory and its convergence is directly related to strictly positive real (SPR) transfer functions. The simple hyperstable adaptive recursive filters (SHARF) is a simplified version of hyperstable recursive filters designed for real time applications. In this paper, SHARF is investigated using the constraint recursive least-squares (RLS) method with SPR transfer functions designed without any a priori knowledge of the parameters of the filter by the pole-zero placement on the unit circle method. To demonstrate its fast convergence and self-adjustment, the SHARF algorithm is applied to a pure four-pole autoregressive process.

Even with the breakthroughs in semiconductor technology that enables billion transistor designs, hardware-based architecture paradigms alone cannot substantially improve processor performance. The challenge in realizing the full potential of these future machines is to find ways to adapt program behavior to application needs and processor resources. As such, run-time optimization has a distinct role in future high performance systems. However, as these systems are dependent on accurate, fine-grain profile information, traditional approaches to collecting profiles at run-time result in significant slowdowns during program execution. A novel approach to low-overhead profiling is to exploit hardware performance monitoring units (PMUs) present in modern microprocessors. The Itanium-2 PMU can periodically sample the last few taken branches in an executing program and this information can be used to recreate partial paths of execution. With compiler-aided analysis, the partial paths can be correlated into full paths. As statistically hot paths are most likely to occur in PMU samples, even infrequent sampling can accurately identify these paths. While traditional path profiling techniques carry a high overhead, a PMU-based path profiler represents an effective lightweight profiling alternative. This paper characterizes the PMU-based path information and demonstrates the construction of such a PMU-based path profiler for a run-time system.

A new class of forwarding strategy, termed decode-amplify-forward (DAF), is proposed for relay channels. By exploiting the coding gain on the inter-user channel and maximizing the data fidelity using soft reliability representation, the proposed DAF strategy has cleverly combined the merits of both decode-forward (DF) and amplify-forward (AF). To fully harness the power promised by the DF-extended schemes such as coded cooperation, we further propose a DAF-DF mixed strategy that blends DAF and DF via time sharing. The considerable gains enabled by the proposed DAF and especially the DAF-DF strategies are demonstrated using mutual information and capacity analysis as well as extensive simulations on fast and slow fading channels.

Multidimensional amplitude-modulation frequency-modulation (AM-FM) models allow us to describe continuous-scale modulations in digital images. AM-FM models have led to a wide range of applications ranging from image and video compression, video image segmentation, to image retrieval in digital libraries. We present new, two-dimensional algorithms that provide significant improvements in both accuracy and speed over previously reported non-parametric approaches. Results are shown for both real and synthetic images.

The current system on chip (SOC) designs containing microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) require the combination of the analog and digital signal processing circuitry besides the non-electrical components and to verify the whole system performance, the MEMS devices should be integrated in a mixed-domain simulator, for this reason appropriate system level modeling and simulation techniques are required. In this paper we present the application of lumped element equivalent networks and reduced order modeling (ROM) in behavioral modeling of band-pass filters based on MEMS resonators.
