An investigation is made about the practicability of building electrostatic generators suitable for energy harvesting applications using 3D-printed electromechanical structures. The generators are based on variable capacitors, using structures similar to Bennet's doubler, or more complex charge multipliers. Normal ABS plastic is used for insulating and mechanical structures, and conductive ABS is used for conducting parts as capacitor plates. As these generators work at very high impedance levels, the relatively high resistivity of the material used as conductor has acceptably small effect, and the technique can be used as an inexpensive alternative for experimenting with generator structures.

The nonlinear effects of partial erasure and transition shift, however, often limit the performance attained by the partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) detector because of model mismatch. Conventionally, the nonlinear effects are either ignored or approximated by linearization technique. In the article, a PRML detector for the PR4 model including the nonlinear effects has been developed to improve the detector performance. The new representation is more accurate and the corresponding PRML detector has better performance without increasing the realization complexity. computer simulation results show that the new representation outperforms the conventional ones due to the enhanced modeling capability. The method is also expected to be applied in the high order partial response channel.

In this study, a single-input multiple-outputs current-mode analog biquadratic filter, based on current differencing transconducatance amplifier (CDTA) is presented. The proposed filter uses two CDTAs, one resistor and two grounded capacitors, which is well suited for integrated circuit implementation. The circuit simultaneously gives 3 standard transfer functions, namely, lowpass, highpass and bandpass filters with independent control of quality factor and pole frequency by electronic method. By summing of IHP and ILP, the notch filter can be also achieved. Moreover, the circuit possesses low input and high output impedance which would be an ideal choice for current-mode cascading. The PSPICE simulation results are included verifying the workability of the proposed filter. The given results agree well with the theoretical anticipation.

This paper introduces a computational approach to characterise healthy controls and insomniacs based on graph spectral theory. Based upon expert-generated hypnograms of sleep onset periods, a network of sleep stages transitions is derived to compute four similarity distances amongst subjects' sleeping patterns. A subsequent statistical analysis is performed to differentiate the 16-subject healthy group from a 16-patient disordered cohort. Our findings demonstrated that the similarity distances based on eigenvalues determination, i.e. d 1 and d 4 were the most reliable and robust measures to characterise insomniacs, discriminating 93% and 87% of the affected population, respectively.

We propose an efficient heuristic algorithm that sets up and releases lightpaths for connection requests dynamically. We partition the routing and wavelength assignment (commonly known as RWA) problem into two subproblems and solves both of them using a well-known shortest path routing algorithm. For solving the routing subproblem, an auxiliary graph is created whereby the nodes and links in the original network are transformed to the edges and vertices, respectively, and the availability of each wavelength on the input and output links of a node as well as the number of available wavelength converters are taken into account in determining the weights of edges. Furthermore, for solving the wavelength assignment subproblem, an auxiliary graph is also utilized and the cost for wavelength conversion is taken into consideration in the edge weight function. A distinguished feature of our algorithm is that it employs more accurate network information on the availability of both the wavelengths and the wavelength converters than the existing algorithms in deciding the routing and the wavelength assignment. Simulation results show that our algorithm performs much better than previously proposed algorithms with comparable computation time, especially when the number of wavelengths is large while the number of converters at each node is limited.

AC-DC converters almost always require common-mode (CM) filters to restrict conducting their electromagnetic interference (EMI) emissions to the power grid and ensure compliance with EMI certification requirements. These CM filters, which are based on the well-known LC lowpass filter, are typically bulky and expensive. Hence, a method for passive $\mathbf{C M}$ current cancellation using a nonlinear model is proposed herein. This method is entirely composed of passive components and offers advantages in terms of cost and system reliability. Compared to conventional passive LC filters, the number of magnetic components remains unchanged. This study proposes the derivation of a nonlinear model to estimate the filter performance using measured data from an actual CM choke; however, the proposed method does not require the mathematical model of a CM choke.

Capacitor placement in electric power systems is an effective way to minimize energy losses, especially in distribution systems, where power losses are more than transmission ones. On the other hand, time-varying load levels affect energy losses amount in such networks. Therefore, load profile has an important role in determining the amount of power losses and the optimal place of shunt capacitors in radial feeders. However, embedding load variability in the capacitor placement problem enhances the computational burden and processing time, while its ignorance leads to inaccurate calculation of energy losses and subsequent optimal locations of capacitor banks. Hence, most of specialized studies have ignored load changes in their capacitor placement models because of computational burden and processing time increase. Accordingly, the present paper intent to evaluate the effect of consumption patterns on capacitor placement proposals in order to understand the importance of load variability consideration in reducing power losses through reactive power compensation. The analysis has been carried out using a mathematical programming language in several distribution systems.
