Despite substantial declines since 2000, lower respiratory infections (LRIs), diarrhoeal diseases, and malaria remain among the leading causes of nonfatal and fatal disease burden for children under 5 years of age (under 5), primarily in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The spatial burden of each of these diseases has been estimated subnationally across SSA, yet no prior analyses have examined the pattern of their combined burden. Here we synthesise subnational estimates of the burden of LRIs, diarrhoea, and malaria in children under-5 from 2000 to 2017 for 43 sub-Saharan countries. Some units faced a relatively equal burden from each of the three diseases, while others had one or two dominant sources of unit-level burden, with no consistent pattern geographically across the entire subcontinent. Using a subnational counterfactual analysis, we show that nearly 300 million DALYs could have been averted since 2000 by raising all units to their national average. Our findings are directly relevant for decision-makers in determining which and targeting where the most appropriate interventions are for increasing child survival. © 2022, The Author(s).

Cardiac arrest (CA) is the leading cause of death in the United States. Induction of hypothermia has been found to improve the functional recovery of CA patients after resuscitation. However, there is no clear guideline for the clinicians yet to determine the prognosis of the CA when patients are treated with hypothermia. The present work aimed at the development of a prognostic marker for the CA patients undergoing hypothermia. A quantitative measure of the complexity of Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, called wavelet sub-band entropy, was employed to predict the patients' outcomes. We hypothesized that the EEG signals of the patients who survived would demonstrate more complexity and consequently higher values of wavelet sub-band entropies. A dataset of 16-channel EEG signals collected from CA patients undergoing hypothermia at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center was used to test the hypothesis. Following preprocessing of the signals and implementation of the wavelet transform, the wavelet sub-band entropies were calculated for different frequency bands and EEG channels. Then the values of wavelet sub-band entropies were compared among two groups of patients: survived vs. non-survived. Background: In an era of shifting global agendas and expanded emphasis on non-communicable diseases and injuries along with communicable diseases, sound evidence on trends by cause at the national level is essential. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) provides a systematic scientific assessment of published, publicly available, and contributed data on incidence, prevalence, and mortality for a mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive list of diseases and injuries. Methods: GBD estimates incidence, prevalence, mortality, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) due to 369 diseases and injuries, for two sexes, and for 204 countries and territories. Input data were extracted from censuses, household surveys, civil registration and vital statistics, disease registries, health service use, air pollution monitors, satellite imaging, disease notifications, and other sources. Cause-specific death rates and cause fractions were calculated using the Cause of Death Ensemble model and spatiotemporal Gaussian process regression. Cause-specific deaths were adjusted to match the total all-cause deaths calculated as part of the GBD population, fertility, and mortality estimates. Deaths were multiplied by standard life expectancy at each age to calculate YLLs. A Bayesian meta-regression modelling tool, DisMod-MR 2.1, was used to ensure consistency between incidence, prevalence, remission, excess mortality, and cause-specific mortality for most causes. Prevalence estimates were multiplied by disability weights for mutually exclusive sequelae of diseases and injuries to calculate YLDs. We considered results in the context of the Socio-demographic Index (SDI), a composite indicator of income per capita, years of schooling, and fertility rate in females younger than 25 years. We define Passive Haptic Rehabilitation (PHR) as an improvement in haptic sensations or abilities using methods which require little or no attention on the part of the user. We present a study that suggests improvement in hand sensation in participants with partial Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) in C4-T1 after use of our Mobile Music Touch (MMT) glove. The MMT glove is designed to teach piano melodies passively. It stimulates the participant's fingers repeatedly in the order of notes in the songs to be learned. In a study of ten hands, seven people with incomplete SCI participate in simple piano lessons three times a week for thirty minutes a session for eight weeks. The experimental group also attends these lessons but also wear our Mobile Music Touch (MMT) glove for two hours a day, five times a week to reinforce these lessons passively. Participants were injured over a year before the beginning of the study. The Semmes-Weinstein test is used to measure sensation at eight points on the hand before and after the piano lessons. The mean improvements between the experimental group and control group show a difference that is statistically significant. All hand areas in the experimental group show an improvement in average Semmes-Weinstein scores.

作者： John Maeda Steven Heller Tim Hoover Has been a design partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers since January 2014 helping entrepreneurs and portfolio companies to build design into their company cultures. He served as the president of Rhode Island School of Design for six years through 2013 and also served as an associate director of research at the MIT Media Lab. Maeda has been a practicing designer since 1990 and his work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Cartier Foundation. He serves on the boards of several corporations including Sonos and Wieden + Kennedy and is chair of eBay's Design Advisory Board. His four published books include The Laws of Simplicity and Redesigning Leadership. Maeda is the recipient of a variety of international awards for his creative work including induction into the Art Director's Club Hall of Fame. In 2001 he received the White House National Design Award in 2002 he received the Mainichi Design Prize in Japan and in 2005 he was awarded the Raymond Loewy Foundation Prize in Germany. Maeda earned a BS and an MS from MIT in computer science and electrical engineering. He received a PhD in design science from the University of Tsukuba Institute of Art and Design in Japan as well as an MBA from Arizona State University. Co‐chair and co‐founder of the MFA Designer as Author and Entrepreneur program at the School of Visual Arts in New York. He was the art director of The New York Times Book Review and now writes the VISUALS column for the NYTBR. He also writes “The Daily Heller” at *** a weekly online design column for Atlantic magazine. He is author co‐author and editor of more than 165 books on the history and practice of graphic design illustration and satiric art. His forthcoming books include 100 Classic Graphic Design Magazines (Laurence King Publishers) and Raw Data: The Process Behind Information Graphics (Thames + Hudson). Liver biopsy remains the gold standard in monitoring progression of liver fibrosis associated with an abnormal increase in collagen. Descriptive scoring systems are still being widely used to grade biopsy samples. In this study, we propose a new set of features by clustering collagen fibers into three groups first based on their localization and connectivity properties, and then by extracting morphological features of collagen fibers. The new feature set is compared to the earlier features used in classification of liver fibrosis, which were based on the total amount of collagen fibers. Our results show that new features lead to more accurate grading of liver fibrosis.

Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals are composed of five important waves: P, Q, R, S, and T. Sometimes, a sixth wave (U) may follow T. Q, R, and S are grouped together to form the QRS-complex. Detection of these waves is a vital step in ECG signal analysis to extract hidden patterns. Many prior studies have focused only on detection of the QRS-complex, because P and T waves are sparse and harder to isolate from the signal. In this paper, we develop an algorithm to detect all five waves - P, Q, R, S, and T in ECG signals using wavelet transformation. The accuracy for P wave detection is 99.5%, 99.8% for QRS complex, and 99.2% for T waves.
