Endoscopic third ventriculostomy is a minimally invasive surgical technique to treat hydrocephalus;a condition where patients suffer from excessive amounts of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the ventricular system of their brain. This technique involves using a monocular endoscope to locate the third ventricle, where a hole can be made to drain excessive fluid. Since a monocular endoscope provides only a 2D view, it is difficult to make this perforation due to the lack of monocular cues and depth perception. In a previous study, we had investigated the use of a stereo-endoscope to allow neurosurgeons to locate and avoid hazardous areas on the surface of the third ventricle. In this paper, we extend our previous study by developing a new methodology to evaluate the targeting performance in piercing the hole in the membrane. We consider the accuracy of this surgical task and derive an index of performance for a task which does not have a well-defined position or width of target. Our performance metric is sensitive and can distinguish between experts and novices. We make use of this metric to demonstrate an objective learning curve on this task for each subject.
The ability of variable speed wind turbines technology to optimally tracking the power from wind energy has become the main reason of their popularity compared with the fixed speed wind turbines. In the earlier stage ...

Conditioning raw neural signals recorded through microelectrode arrays implanted in the brain is an important first step before information extraction can take place. This paper reports on the design and implementation of a program.able and fully implantable microsystem that fulfills this purpose. The system design builds on our earlier work that relies on a sparse representation of the neural signals to combat the limited telemetry bandwidth when wireless communication with the external world is sought. The system has a multimodal processing capability to support a wide range of scenarios in real experimental conditions. A transmission link with rate-dependent compression and spike sorting strategy is shown to preserve information fidelity. At 32 channels sampled at 25 kHz, the power consumption of the system is 5.19 mW and has been implemented on a 5mm×5mm nano-FPGA, bringing its performance within the implantable power-size constraints for clinical applications.
The goal of this work is to understand the role of nano-confinement in designing an inexpensive and user friendly 'point- of- care' (POC) protein biosensor. We used printed circuit board based gold chips and i...

This paper describes an approach to improve the contrast and signal to noise ratio on ultrasound images. Images with sub-pixel lateral displacements were re-sampled using a hexagonal grid, registered and compounded. The resultant image was filtered using a hexagonal adaptive masking filter. This approach was evaluated with simulated images and real images from a breast phantom. The results show total improvements in signal to noise ratio of up to 313% in simulated images, and 182% in phantom images. Contrast to noise ratio was improved by 286% in simulated images and 56% in phantom images.
