We report results of the experimental investigation of the low-frequency noise in graphene transistors. The graphene devices were measured in three-terminal configuration. The measurements revealed low flicker noise levels with the normalized noise spectral density close to 1/f (f is the frequency) and the Hooge parameter α H ~10 -3 . Both top-gate and back-gate devices were studied. The analysis of the noise spectral-density dependence on the gate biases helped us to elucidate the noise sources in these devices. We compared the noise performance of graphene devices with that of carbon nanotube devices. It was determined that graphene devices works better than carbon nanotube devices in terms of the low-frequency noise. The obtained results are important for graphene electronic, communication and sensor applications.

A capacitance relative humidity (RH) sensor is described that has a design, construction, and material composition that result in an inexpensive and robust sensor. This sensor has a multilayer, free-standing film construction. It consists of a humidity sensitive polyimide (PI) dielectric core and conductive layers consisting of carbon filled polysulfone on each side of the polyirnide film to form a capacitor. The polyimide used is a BPDA-ODA type, and replaces a PMDA-ODA type polyimide used in a previous version of this sensor. The BPDA-ODA sensor has a nominal capacitance of 200 pF and a nominal sensitivity of 13% at 100% RH. The characteristics of this humidity sensor are discussed and compared to the characteristics of the PMDA-ODA type sensor. Characteristics considered include the PI film moisture uptake and water vapor transmission, and the sensors’ sensitivity to relative humidity, frequency response, and aging at 85°C/85% RH. The dual-state sorption model and free volume calculations are used to demonstrate that observed differences in the film are due to differences in chemical composition between the films.

Rett syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder of the brain that affects females more often than males. Its cause is linked to the mutations within the gene encoding methyl CpG-binding protein 2 (MeCP2). Presently, there is little information regarding how the loss of MeCP2 affects brain activity. It has been documented that during awake but immobile state, the MeCP2 deficient mice exhibit spontaneous, rhythmic electroencephalogram (EEG) seizure-like events (SLEs) in the range of 6-9 Hz. In this study, we analyze the cortical EEG activity in female MeCP2-deficient mice over 24 hour recordings. Characterizing the SLE and inter-SLE durations by fitting to a gamma distribution we show similarity to previous in vivo epilepsy studies. These results suggest that the SLE and inter-SLE dynamics differ. More precisely, the SLE terminations appear to be a result of time-dependent mechanisms, whereas the inter-SLEs are a result of a random process.

We report results of the study of the low-frequency noise in thin films of bismuth selenide topological insulators, which were mechanically exfoliated from bulk crystals via “graphene-like” procedures. From the resistance dependence on the film thickness, it was established that the surface conduction contributions to electron transport were dominant. It was found that the current fluctuations have the noise spectral density SI ∞ 1/ f (where f is the frequency) for the frequency range up to 10 kHz. The obtained noise data are important for transport experiments with topological insulators and for any proposed device applications of these materials.
