Researchers at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez (UPRM) have conducted an analysis of student needs and have identified strategies to respond to the General and STEM education challenges at UPRM. A Center for Resources in General Education (CIVIS) has been established to deal with these challenges by providing students and professors a new, integrated perspective (focused on General and STEM skills) of the curriculum, and by enabling student academic success through various learning opportunities. CIVIS brings together faculty from Agricultural Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Business Administration and engineering in order to develop activities that provide interdisciplinary and global perspectives to UPRM's General Education. The Center focuses on two main activities: 1) Paths to Student Success, and 2) Sustainable Context with the use of student learning modules tying the activities together. AU initiatives of the Center are supported by a recent grant from the U.S. department of Education, and are based on the success of initiatives that have been previously tested at a smaller scale at UPRM. CIVIS provides resources to expand the reach of those initiatives and will ensure sustainability by the institutionalization of those initiatives. ©2009 IEEE.

Estimating rate functions underlying neural point processes is essential for characterizing the firing patterns of cortical neurons involved in sensory and motor processing. This paper introduces a new method for directly estimating neuronal firing rates from a compressed representation of their extracellular recordings. The approach is based on extending a near-optimal sparse representation of the extracellular recordings to time scales matching those of the underlying rate functions, thereby performing the same role as a kernel-density estimator but at a much lower computational cost. Experimental results demonstrate that this method achieves comparable performance to the conventional Gaussian kernel estimation methods at a fraction of the computational cost. This makes it suitable to brain machine interface applications where real time decoding of neural activity for neuro-motor prosthetic control using firing rate estimates is strongly desired.

Estimating the response properties of cortical neurons is an essential step to decode movement intentions in cortically-controlled brain machine interface applications. Among these properties is the variable degree of interaction between neurons while subjects carry out similar motor tasks. In this paper, we use a dynamic model of motor encoding, previously shown to fit experimental data from primary and supplementary motor areas in nonhuman primates, to demonstrate the utility of identifying interaction patterns in improving decoding performance. Neuronal interaction is quantified by estimating the functional connectivity among neurons in a cooperative network that are driven by heterogeneously-tuned neurons in an input noncooperative network. A reward-based functional plasticity is induced in the model during repeated execution of a center-out reach task and the connectivity is continuously estimated to track changes in the interaction patterns. Results demonstrate that the ability to track cortical adaptation can contribute significantly to improvement in motor control of neuroprosthetic devices.

An integrated EPON/WiMAX network has been an attractive attention due to its features of achieving stable backhaul transmissions to WiMAX users and reducing the expenditure of network deployment. In implementing such a network, realizing a scheduling mechanism capable of sharing the available bandwidth between the heterogeneous Ethernet and WiMAX traffic in an effective manner is problematic. In the present study, this problem is addressed by using a game-theoretic-based scheme comprising a bankruptcy game and a bargaining game to perform an intra-ONU scheduling function at each ONU within the network. In the proposed approach, each ONU distributes the total amount of bandwidth allocated by the OLT between the Ethernet and WiMAX traffic buffers in accordance with the results of the bankruptcy game. By applying bargaining games, the allocated bandwidth is then further distributed to the different traffic classes within the Ethernet or WiMAX traffic in accordance with their QoS requirements. The simulation results confirm the validity and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

The success of simulation-based design of power amplifiers for wireless communications is limited by the accuracy of nonlinear models that are used to represent the transistors. This paper provides some considerations that should be taken into account in measurement-based modeling of GaN transistors. With GaN modeling, particular attention needs to be paid to thermal and trapping issues. The use of pulsed measurements as part of the modeling process is critical to obtaining reliable GaN models. Established models such as EEHEMT, Angelov, and CFET can be successfully used in representing GaN devices.

A pulsed simulation approach is demonstrated for prediction of duty-cycle dependent thermal effects in transistors. Also a novel method is shown for fitting and/or validating electro-thermal models using pulsed IV measurements and pulsed IV simulations. A commercial LDMOS device is used to demonstrate the new methods. After extracting the thermal time constant, good agreement is achieved between measured and simulated pulsed IV results under a wide range of different pulse conditions including DC, very short (<0.1%) duty cycles, and varied pulse widths between these extremes. A three-pole electro-thermal equivalent circuit model was shown to improve the model data fitting for intermediate pulse widths.

In a radio frequency identification (RFID) system, when more than one tag communicates with a reader at the same time, a collision will occur resulting in the failure of that communication. Many anti-collision algorithms, such as binary tree (BT), FSA, and DFSA have been used in ISO and EPC standards to prevent such a collision. This paper develops a new anti-collision algorithm based on the BT and the DFSA algorithms. Specifically, all tags are divided into many groups using the DSFA algorithm. Then, the tags in each group are identified using the BT algorithm. Results indicate that the proposed algorithm performs better than the existing ones in terms of the number of used time slots (the less the used time slot, the faster the algorithm).

The basic function of VSCs is to convert the DC voltage stored in a capacitor into AC voltages or AC voltages into DC voltage. One of the advantages of the VSC is that this kind of electronic converters allow to control the active and reactive power flow with an ac-grid independently. This paper presents a short analysis of the characteristics and dynamic of VSC-HVDC, identification techniques to find transfer function to DC Voltage and Reactive Power in a rectifier station are explored, and finally controller design to regulate the DC voltage is exposed and tested by simulations using Matlab Simulink and its toolbox SimpowerSystems.
