Visual surveillance with dynamic background is one of the most active research topics in computer vision. Especially, researches for abandoned detection in the public place have been caused by preventing terror and accident. Previous researches for abandoned detection have been based on a static image and used an image difference. In this paper we present an algorithm for a mobile robot and we use optical flow for detecting a static object and distances from abandoned objects. For this purpose, we find abandoned objects and predict a position of objects using a mobile robot visual system with a single camera.

Voltage spikes are ubiquitous in biological nervous systems. How spikes can be used to encode signals, facilitate communication, and implement important computations is an important question of contemporary neuroscience. Acoustic processing tasks provide a rich range of applications for this encoding scheme. As a summary of the Ph.D. research of the first author, we present two analog VLSI spike-based example systems that process acoustic information using spikes: a model of the neural signal processing involved in bat echolocation, and a low-power, time-domain acoustic periodicity detector.

An approach is proposed for obtaining both electrocardiographic potential and respiratory variation signal from infants lying supine with underwear during sleep. Capacitively coupled bed-sheet electrode unit and a methodology of capacitive sensing were employed to realize the approach. A pilot device was fabricated to explore the feasibility of the approach and evaluation experiments were conducted for 5 infants aged from 43 to 174 days. The results revealed that two outputs of the developed device synchronized respectively with the reference ECG and sleep breath in all experiments. The present device appears promising for application to bedding as an unconstrained method for ECG and respiratory variation monitoring of neonates or infants during sleep.

To support our ongoing work in modeling bat echolocation, an artificial bat head was designed and fabricated using a 3D printer, an ultrasonic cochlea-like filter bank with 16 channels was designed with moderate quality (Q) factor, and 128 spiking neurons convert these signals to spike trains. A two-dimensional address-event arbiter is used to transmit these spikes off of the chip. We demonstrate that the population of spiking neurons can be decoded to estimate azimuth and elevation of ultrasonic chirps. This chip was fabricated in a commercially-available 0.5(mu)m CMOS process and consumes approximately 36(mu)W.

IP lookup is a key task in packet processing to guarantee the high performance of the IP routers. It has been proposed to use TCAMs to implement IP-lookup accelerators for IP forwarding. In the paper, a new TCAM-based IP-lookup scheme MSMB-LPT is proposed and studied. It is shown that MSMB-LPT scheme significantly improve the performance of the state-of-art MSMB-PT scheme in terms of speedup and power consumption by simulations. These performance improvements are achieved with reduced cost.
