This work focuses the problem of increasing the integral implementation efficacy of block ciphers. It proposes a new approach to the cipher design, suitable to applications, where constrained resources are available to embedded security mechanisms, such as ad-hoc, sensor and wireless networks. The paper develops the cipher design approach based on the use of datadependent (DD) operations (DDOs). A new class of DDO based on the advanced controlled elements (CEs) is introduced, which is proven well suited to hardware implementations, for ASIC and FPGA devices. Classification of the CEs and properties of some new DDOs are also presented. A new DDO-based cipher design is considered, which is more efficient for VLSI implementation than AES finalists and other known DDO-based ciphers. For the proposed cipher, Eagle-128, both ASIC and FPGA implementation results are presented. Finally comparisons with other published implementations are illustrated, using the Performance/Cost ratio and Performance/(Cost*Frequency) ratio indices.

This paper proposes a method to predic mobile path loss in forests using MIMO fuzzy logic system. The multi-input was classified into seven input parameters defined as, X1 is number of trees/m2 and X2 to X7 are tree structure parameters. These crisp inputs are classified by fuzzifier to fuzzy sets and then inferenced using fuzzy linguistic rule base into multi - output path loss slopes via de-fuzzifier. For this study, we classified the terrains into high-, medium-, low- density and grass area and used the simple linguistic rules for prediction the path loss slopes. We performed measurements in different forest densities at a frequency of 1.8 GHz with base station antenna height in a range of 3, 4, and 5 m above ground while the receiving antenna height was fixed at 1.8 m above ground. The results have shown that fuzzy logic approach provides more accurate prediction of path loss slopes than that of conventional empirical mathematic model. The proposed models will be useful for the local wireless network and micro-cell design of mobile communication systems in forests.

This paper analyzes the effect of custom error control schemes on the energy efficiency in Bluetooth sensor networks. The energy efficiency metric considers in just one parameter the energy and reliability constraints of the wireless sensor networks. New packet types are introduced using some error control strategies in the AUX1 packet, such as Hamming and BCH codes, with and without CRC for error detection. Two adaptive techniques are proposed that change the error control strategy based on the number of hops traversed by a packet through the network. The performance results are obtained through simulations in a channel with Rayleigh fading for networks with different number of hops, showing that error control can improve the energy efficiency of a Bluetooth-based sensor network.
