Liquid crystals have proven to provide a versatile experimental and theoretical platform for studying topological objects such as vortices, skyrmions, and hopfions. In parallel, in hard condensed matter physics, the concept of topological phases and topological order has been introduced in the context of spin liquids to investigate emergent phenomena like quantum Hall effects and high-temperature superconductivity. Here, we bridge these two seemingly disparate perspectives on topology in physics. Combining experiments and simulations, we show how topological defects in liquid crystals can be used as versatile building blocks to create complex, highly degenerate topological phases, which we refer to as ‘Combinatorial Vortex Lattices’ (CVLs). CVLs exhibit extensive residual entropy and support locally stable quasi-particle excitations in the form of charge-conserving topological monopoles, which can act as mobile information carriers and be linked via Dirac strings. CLVs can be rewritten and reconfigured on demand, endowed with various symmetries, and modified through laser-induced topological surgery — an essential capability for information storage and retrieval. We demonstrate experimentally the realization, stability, and precise optical manipulation of CVLs, thus opening new avenues for understanding and technologically exploiting higher-hierarchy topology in liquid crystals and other ordered media. Organic semiconductor detectors have always been in active research interest of researchers due to its low fabrication cost. Vertical organic detectors have been studied in the past but not much of the works have been done on lateral organic detectors. The lateral design has an advantage over the vertical design that it is easy to fabricate and can be easily integrated with the backplane TFT imager circuit. Integrating an organic photodetectors with TFT imager can improve the over all sensitivity of the imager. However the lateral design limits the fill-factor. Here in our work we propose a new bilayered lateral organic photodetectors with Copper-Phthalocyanine (CUPC) as top and Perylene- Tetracarboxylic Bis- Benzimidazole (PTCBI) as the bottom layer organic material. The bottom organic semiconductor layer work as both, charge transport layer and photon absorption layer. The top and bottom layer provides and heterojunction a potential gradient enough to separate the photo generated excitons in to electrons and holes. The incident photons are absorbed in the two layers active layers giving an exciton. These excitons see a potential barrier at the CUPC-PTCBI heterojunction and separated into holes and electrons. The separated electrons are directed by the external applied electric field and thus give a increase in photocurrent. Lateral organic photodetectors are simple to design and have low dark current. The photo-response of these photo detectors is observed approximately three orders higher in magnitude compare able to its dark response. The dual layer has an advantage of tuning the devices for different absorption wavelengths and were observed more stable comparable to vertical devices. © 2011 SPIE.

To accommodate the wide range of input voltages supplied by redundant batteries and ensure an adequate hold-up time for communication systems during utility power failures, power supplies used in 5 G base stations typically include a front-end boost converter as the first stage and a second-stage isolated converter. In this paper, a new topology for a regenerative snubber in boost converters is proposed. Compared to traditional active or passive snubber topologies, the proposed snubber offers the advantages of having fewer components and occupying less space. Moreover, it does not require additional active devices and can be driven by widely-used commercial PWM control integrated circuits, achieving a higher level of cost-effectiveness and offering increased industrial applications. The final prototype of a power supply for a networking switch hub (as used in 5 G base stations) is fabricated to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method. © 2024 The Authors

In Internet of Vehicles, a multi-factor weighted relay-node selection method is proposed to address the problem that single-hop relay node performance is optimal but its multi-hop is not optimal, which exists on the greedy algorithm in 3D mountain scenarios. The ration for the algorithm is demonstrated by conducting a comprehensive analysis of the impact of 3D mountain features on the relay-node selection method. The experimental results in simulations on real-world map show that the designed algorithm performs better compared with the improved greedy algorithm. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

The increased use of small satellites in commercial, defense, and research industries reinforces the need for efficient and reliable communication subsystems. Compact, space rated, communication subsystems present their own unique design challenges. This paper presents the design and implementation of a lower power, low form factor communication subsystem for a IP pico-satellite, developed by a team of undergraduate students from Wentworth Institute of technology. This effort aims to contribute to the growing field of small satellite communications by providing a robust and efficient solution. © 2024 IEEE.

As a mechanism for providing students with a meaningful oral presentation experience, the computer engineering technology program at RIT has instituted a new requirement for each student to meet. The requirement is related to their co-operative education assignment. Students returning from co-op are required to create a PowerPoint presentation and a poster describing their co-op experiences in order to receive a passing grade for their co-op assignment. These requirements are in addition to the employer's and student's co-op evaluations traditionally incorporated into the student assessment. These new activities provide upper class students with an opportunity to share with their classmates, underclassmen, and professors some of their co-op related experiences and provide them a formal setting in which to practice presentation and communications skills. This paper includes details for all phases of the co-op poster and presentation assignment and delivery. Planning aspects are discussed along with details of the instructions provided to students. Photographs are included to illustrate typical posters, presentation arrangements and various other meeting activities.

Empirical mode decomposition of near-infrared spectroscopy signals for predicting oil content in palm fruits

Oil content estimation in palm fruits is a precious property that significantly impacts oil palm production,starting from the upstream and *** content can be used to monitor the progress of the oil palm fresh fruit bunch(FFB)and be applied to identify product *** on the near-infrared(NIR)signals,this study proposes an empirical mode decomposition(EMD)technique to decompose signals and predict the oil content of palm ***,350 palm fruits with Tenera varieties(Elaeis guineensis ***),at various ages of maturity,were harvested from the Cikabayan Oil Palm Plantation(IPB University,Indonesia).Second,each sample was sent directly to the laboratory for NIR signal measurements and oil content ***,the EMD analysis and arti-ficial neural network(ANN)were employed to correlate the NIR signals and oil ***,a robust EMD-ANN model is generated by optimizing the lowest possible *** on performance evaluation,the proposed technique can predict oil content with a coefficient of determination(R2)of 0.933±0.015 and a root mean squared error(RMSE)of 1.446±*** results demonstrate that the model has a good predictive capacity and has the potential to predict the oil content of palm fruits directly,without neither solvents nor reagents,which makes it environmentally ***,the proposed technique has a promising potential to be applied in the oil palm *** like this will lead to the effective and efficient management of oil palm production.

Amorphous multi-element materials offer unprecedented tunability in composition and properties, yet their rational design remains challenging due to the lack of predictive structure-property relationships and the vast configurational space. Traditional modeling struggles to capture the intricate short-range order that dictates their stability and functionality. We here introduce ApolloX, a pioneering predictive framework for amorphous multi-element materials, establishing a new paradigm by integrating physics-informed generative modeling with particle swarm optimization, using chemical short-range order as an explicit constraint. By systematically navigating the disordered energy landscape, ApolloX enables the targeted design of thermodynamically stable amorphous configurations. It accurately predicts atomic-scale arrangements, including composition-driven metal clustering and amorphization trends, which are well-validated by experiments, while also guiding synthesis by leveraging sluggish diffusion to control elemental distribution and disorder. The resulting structural evolution, governed by composition, directly impacts catalytic performance, leading to improved activity and stability with increasing amorphization. This predictive-experimental synergy transforms the discovery of amorphous materials, unlocking new frontiers in catalysis, energy storage, and functional disordered systems. Observability of a Specially Structured Model

The theorems associated with the observability matrices and gramians play a crucial role in both analysis and design of control systems. This paper presents the development of these theorems and their proofs in the context of a computationally attractive system model. This is accomplished by incorpo rating the structural properties of the model into the theorems that are found in the literature. The developed theorems lead to a generalized form of the Liapunov equation. An analytical solution for this equation is also presented. Finally, an example is given to illustrate the application of the proposed theorems. © 1995, Sage Publications. All rights reserved.

A basic laboratory exercise was designed and implemented, for K-12 students, which delves into the measurement of basics of electrical circuit parameters, such as resistance, current and voltage. This 2-3 hour lab exercise gives students a glimpse into basic electrical engineering concepts, which are covered in an undergraduate Sophomore level introductory Circuits-1 course that all Electrical engineering majors are required to take. Laboratory participants cover the same material, in a small amount of time that the undergraduate students cover in 2-3 weeks. The lab exercise also includes an interactive exercise that helps students understand decimal to binary conversion for unsigned and signed decimal numbers via a tool already being used as part of interactive digital logic laboratory experience. In addition, students try their skill in generating power, under varying load conditions, using a bike-power generator as a fun-filled competitive activity. This paper outlines the laboratory exercise learning outcomes, implemented laboratory exercises, observations made, and results of a conducted exit survey. © American Society for engineering Education, 2018.
