Preparation and mitigation efforts for widespread landslide hazards can be aided by a large-scale, well-labeled landslide inventory with high location accuracy. Recent small-scale studies for pixel-wise labeling of potential landslide areas in remotely-sensed images using deep learning (DL) showed potential but were based on data from very small, homogeneous regions with unproven model transferability. In this paper we consider a more realistic and practical setting for large-scale heterogeneous landslide data collection and DL-based labeling. In this setting, remotely sensed images are collected sequentially in temporal batches, where each batch focuses on images from a particular ecoregion, but different batches can focus on different ecoregions with distinct landscape characteristics. For such a scenario, we study the following questions: (1) How well do DL models trained in homogeneous regions perform when they are transferred to different ecoregions, (2) Does increasing the spatial coverage in the data improve model performance in a given ecoregion (even when the extra data do not come from the ecoregion), and (3) Can a landslide pixel labeling model be incrementally updated with new data, but without access to the old data and without losing performance on the old data (so that researchers can share models obtained from proprietary datasets)? We address these questions by extending the Learning without Forgetting framework, which is used for incremental training of image classification models, to the setting of incremental training of semantic segmentation models (e.g., identifying all landslide pixels in an image). We call the resulting extension Task-Specific Model Updates (TSMU). The goal of this framework is to continually update a (landslide) semantic segmentation model with data from new ecoregions without having to revisit data from old ecoregions and without losing performance on them. Topological insulators are materials with an insulating bulk interior while maintaining gapless boundary states against back scattering. Bi2Se3 is a prototypical topological insulator with a Dirac-cone surface state around Γ. Here, we present a controlled methodology to gradually remove Se atoms from the surface Se-Bi-Se-Bi-Se quintuple layers, eventually forming bilayer-Bi on top of the quintuple bulk. Our method allows us to track the topological surface state and confirm its robustness throughout the surface modification. Importantly, we report a relocation of the topological Dirac cone in both real space and momentum space, as the top surface layer transitions from quintuple Se-Bi-Se-Bi-Se to bilayer-Bi. Additionally, charge transfer among different surface layers is identified. Our study provides a precise method to manipulate surface configurations, allowing for the fine-tuning of the topological surface states in Bi2Se3, which represents a significant advancement towards nano-engineering of topological states. In this paper an electret-based electrostatic induction wind harvester is presented. The induction electrostatic field is produced with an electret. It is described how the electret and the harvester prototype have been obtained. The primary challenge in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) is electrolyte leakage, compromising long-term stability and performance. Alternative electrolytes and encapsulation strategies have been explored to address this. In this study, we propose using nitrogen, fluorine, and sulfur-doped reduced graphene oxide (NSF-rGO) aerogel as an electrolyte encapsulator within DSSCs. The NSF-rGO aerogel was synthesized using a one-pot hydrothermal technique and serves to trap the liquid electrolyte, enhancing cell stability while maintaining conductivity. Although the initial power conversion efficiency of the NSF-rGO-based DSSC was lower than that of the conventional DSSC, it demonstrated significantly improved long-term stability. After two years, the efficiency drop in the NSF-rGO encapsulated DSSC was notably less than in the conventional design, indicating effective electrolyte retention and resistance to degradation. These results suggest that NSF-rGO aerogel encapsulation is a promising strategy for extending the operational lifespan of DSSCs and contributing to more sustainable energy solutions. © 2025 Taiwan Institute of Chemical Engineers

We report polymer composite films containing fillers comprised of quasi-one-dimensional (1D) van der Waals materials, specifically transition metal trichalcogenides containing 1D structural motifs that enable their exfoliation into bundles of atomic threads. Background: Injection drug use (IDU) is a dangerous health behavior that increases mortality and morbidity. Identifying IDU early and initiating harm reduction interventions can benefit individuals at risk. However, extracting IDU behaviors from patients’ electronic health records (EHR) is difficult because there is no International Classification of Disease (ICD) code and the only place IDU information can be indicated is unstructured free-text clinical notes. Although natural language processing can efficiently extract this information from unstructured data, there are no validated tools. Methods: To address this gap in clinical information, we design and demonstrate a question-answering (QA) framework to extract information on IDU from clinical notes. Our framework involves two main steps: (1) generating a gold-standard QA dataset and (2) developing and testing the QA model. We utilize 2323 clinical notes of 1145 patients sourced from the VA Corporate Data Warehouse to construct the gold-standard dataset for developing and evaluating the QA model. We also demonstrate the QA model’s ability to extract IDU-related information on temporally out-of-distribution data. Results: Here we show that for a strict match between gold-standard and predicted answers, the QA model achieves 51.65% F1 score. For a relaxed match between the gold-standard and predicted answers, the QA model obtains 78.03% F1 score, along with 85.38% Precision and 79.02% Recall scores. Moreover, the QA model demonstrates consistent performance when subjected to temporally out-of-distribution data. Conclusions: Our study introduces a QA framework designed to extract IDU information from clinical notes, aiming to enhance the accurate and efficient detection of people who inject drugs, extract relevant information, and ultimately facilitate informed patient care. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

The design of a bio-inspired butterfly-shaped patch antenna array, generated by polar transformations, covering the wireless local area network (WLAN) band at 2.4 GHz (2.400-2.483 GHz), with similar and dissimilar elements is presented in this paper. The dissimilar bio-inspired antenna presented a bandwidth of 96MHz covering the IEEE802.11b, g band, maximum gain of 8.64dBi, concentrated half power beamwidth of 52 degrees and front-to-back ratio of 15.21dB.

Dynamic processes on networks, be it information transfer in the Internet, contagious spreading in a social network, or neural signaling, take place along shortest or nearly shortest paths. Unfortunately, our maps of most large networks are substantially incomplete due to either the highly dynamic nature of networks, or high cost of network measurements, or both, rendering traditional path finding methods inefficient. We find that shortest paths in large real networks, such as the network of protein-protein interactions (PPI) and the Internet at the autonomous system (AS) level, are not random but are organized according to latent-geometric rules. If nodes of these networks are mapped to points in latent hyperbolic spaces, shortest paths in them align along geodesic curves connecting endpoint nodes. We find that this alignment is sufficiently strong to allow for the identification of shortest path nodes even in the case of substantially incomplete networks. We demonstrate the utility of latent-geometric path finding in problems of cellular pathway reconstruction and communication security. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Many questions are still open regarding the physical mechanisms behind the magnetic switching in Gd-Fe-Co alloys by single optical pulses. Phenomenological models suggest a femtosecond scale exchange relaxation between sublattice magnetization as the driving mechanism for switching. The recent observation of thermally induced switching in Gd-Fe-Co by using both several picosecond optical laser pulse as well as electric current pulses has questioned this previous understanding. This has raised the question of whether or not the same switching mechanics are acting at the femtosecond and picosecond scales. In this work, we aim at filling this gap in the understanding of the switching mechanisms behind thermal single-pulse switching. To that end, we have studied experimentally thermal single-pulse switching in Gd-Fe-Co alloys, for a wide range of system parameters, such as composition, laser power, and pulse duration. We provide a quantitative description of the switching dynamics using atomistic spin dynamics methods with excellent agreement between the model and our experiments across a wide range of parameters and timescales, ranging from femtoseconds to picoseconds. Furthermore, we find distinct element-specific damping parameters as a key ingredient for switching with long picosecond pulses and argue that switching with pulse durations as long as 15 ps is possible due to a low damping constant of Gd. Our findings can be easily extended to speed up dynamics in other contexts where ferrimagnetic Gd-Fe-Co alloys have been already demonstrated to show fast and energy-efficient processes, e.g., domain-wall motion in a track and spin-orbit torque switching in spintronics devices.
