This study examines the automatic recognition of human emotions in real-time through facial expressions from webcams. Real-time emotion recognition is a crucial element in human-computer interaction and emotional computing. The study evaluates the effectiveness of various techniques in real-time facial emotion recognition using a custom CNN model, creating an ensemble with a voting mechanism, and integrating the system for real-time emotion recognition. The CNN model was trained on the FER2013 dataset, which consists of facial images labeled with different emotional states. It achieved a remarkable accuracy of 95%. In this study, we developed a dataset named ATS_FER2024, which consists of 184 images depicting seven distinct emotions. The tests conducted on this dataset yielded an accuracy rate of 89%. Despite its small size, the dataset's accuracy is noteworthy. The findings contribute to academic knowledge on developing emotion recognition systems, enhancing empathy, and creating context-sensitive interactions in real-world applications.

Several recent studies have elucidated why knowledge distillation (KD) improves model performance. However, few have researched the other advantages of KD in addition to its improving model performance. In this study, we have attempted to show that KD enhances the interpretability as well as the accuracy of models. We measured the number of concept detectors identified in network dissection for a quantitative comparison of model interpretability. We attributed the improvement in interpretability to the class-similarity information transferred from the teacher to student models. First, we confirmed the transfer of class-similarity information from the teacher to student model via logit distillation. Then, we analyzed how class-similarity information affects model interpretability in terms of its presence or absence and degree of similarity information. We conducted various quantitative and qualitative experiments and examined the results on different datasets, different KD methods, and according to different measures of interpretability. Ontology embeddings map classes, relations, and individuals in ontologies into Rn, and within Rn similarity between entities can be computed or new axioms inferred. For ontologies in the Description Logic EL++, several embedding methods have been developed that explicitly generate models of an ontology. However, these methods suffer from some limitations;they do not distinguish between statements that are unprovable and provably false, and therefore they may use entailed statements as negatives. Furthermore, they do not utilize the deductive closure of an ontology to identify statements that are inferred but not asserted. We evaluated a set of embedding methods for EL++ ontologies based on high-dimensional ball representation of concept descriptions, incorporating several modifications that aim to make use of the ontology deductive closure. In particular, we designed novel negative losses that account both for the deductive closure and different types of negatives. We demonstrate that our embedding methods improve over the baseline ontology embedding in the task of knowledge base or ontology completion. © 2024, CC BY.

KenCoh: A Ranked-Based Canonical Coherence 1

In this paper, we consider the problem of characterizing a robust global dependence between two brain regions where each region may contain several voxels or channels. This work is driven by experiments to investigate the dependence between two cortical regions and to identify differences in brain networks between brain states, e.g., alert and drowsy states. The most common approach to explore dependence between two groups of variables (or signals) is via canonical correlation analysis (CCA). However, it is limited to only capturing linear associations and is sensitive to outlier observations. These limitations are crucial because brain network connectivity is likely to be more complex than linear and that brain signals may exhibit heavy-tailed properties. To overcome these limitations, we develop a robust method, Kendall canonical coherence (KenCoh), for learning monotonic connectivity structure among neuronal signals filtered at given frequency bands. Furthermore, we propose the KenCoh-based permutation test to investigate the differences in brain network connectivity between two different states. Our simulation study demonstrates that KenCoh is competitive to the traditional variance-covariance estimator and outperforms the later when the underlying distributions are heavy-tailed. We apply our method to EEG recordings from a virtual-reality driving experiment. Our proposed method led to further insights on the differences of frontal-parietal cross-dependence network when the subject is alert and when the subject is drowsy and that left-parietal channel drives this dependence at the beta-band. © 2024, CC BY.

This paper conducts a comprehensive analysis of electrical generator performance using Finite Element Analysis (FEA), with a specific emphasis on the role of coil numbers in influencing generator efficiency and functionality. In the context of modern energy systems, where efficient power generation is paramount, this research aims to elucidate the relationship between the number of coils within a generator and its overall performance, including power output and electromagnetic behavior. Through systematic FEA simulations that vary coil numbers while keeping other parameters constant, this study provides valuable insights into the trade-offs associated with increased coil numbers and enhanced efficiency. These findings have significant implications for optimizing generator designs across various applications, from renewable energy systems to industrial power generation, ultimately advancing our understanding of generator dynamics and contributing to more sustainable and efficient power generation technologies. © 2023 IEEE.

Towards Automated Functional Equation Proving: A Benchmark Dataset and A Domain-Specific In-Context Agent

Automated Theorem Proving (ATP) faces significant challenges due to the vast action space and the computational demands of proof generation. Recent advances have utilized Large Language Models (LLMs) for action selection in ATP, but these methods often require substantial computational resources. This study introduces the Functional Equation Automated Solver (FEAS), an agent that builds on the COPRA in-context learning framework within the Lean environment. FEAS innovates by refining prompt generation and response parsing mechanisms, integrating domain-specific heuristics for functional equations, and introducing the FunEq dataset—a rigorously curated collection of functional equation problems categorized into three difficulty levels. The agent’s performance is evaluated against established baselines using this dataset, demonstrating improvements in theorem proving accuracy, particularly with the integration of functional equation-specific heuristics. Our results highlight the effectiveness of FEAS in generating and formalizing high-level proof strategies into Lean proofs, emphasizing the potential of tailored approaches in domain-specific ATP challenges. © 2024, CC BY.

This paper investigates the effect of bitrate control methods on QoE of multi-view video and audio streaming with MPEG-DASH. We adopt three bitrate control methods for conventional single-view video streaming to the MVV-A system with MPEG-DASH. We conduct a subjective experiment changing available network bandwidth and investigate the effect of the methods on QoE.

This paper evaluates the QoE of video and audio transmission over a full-duplex wireless LAN with interference traffic through a computer simulation and a subjective experiment. We employ a simulation environment with a pair of audiovisual transmission and reception terminals and a pair of interference traffic transmission and reception ones. We investigate the effect of the transmission rate of interference traffic and communication distance in a wireless channel on the output quality of the video and audio stream at the reception terminal. We perform a subjective experiment with the output timing of video and audio obtained by the simulation.

Lampung Province is one of the regions with the highest cocoa production, but many factors can interfere with cocoa production. One of them is the factor of pests and diseases of cocoa that cannot be identified and prevented beforehand. An expert system is a system that adopts expert knowledge or experts in a particular field. However, the diagnosis usually contains uncertainty in the form of answers and statements used. Certainty Factor (CF) algorithm, is one of the algorithms that is able to overcome uncertainty by providing a value for the level of trust from experts and users. However, because the CF value is based on the level of confidence in the symptoms experienced by the user, it creates a problem, namely the consistency of the user's answers. So, it is necessary to make improvements to the CF algorithm, to overcome the inconsistency of user answers through the use of Consistency Ratio (CR). Through the use of CR, inconsistencies are overcome through comparisons between the consistency index and the random index. Based on the results of the accuracy test, the proposed model is able to produce an accuracy rate of 86.67% in the diagnosis of pests and diseases on cocoa plants. © 2022 IEEE.

The main efficiency limiting factors for homogeneous emitter solar cells are resistance loss through metal contact on the front side and recombination loss at the surface. Herein, a selective emitter technology is introduced to solve the above problem, and it is currently commercialized in the mainstream p-PERC (Passivated Emitter Rear Contact) solar cell. The selective emitter boosts efficiency by 0.3-0.4% when compared to a homogeneous emitter, and when applied to the n-TOPCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact) solar cell, high efficiency of 26% or higher may be predicted. The most widely utilized selective emitter technologies are laser and etch-back. The One-Step technology, which is suited to the n-TOPCon solar cell process, a laser is suitable for mass manufacturing with high yield. Because selective emitters increase electrical characteristics, which impact cell efficiency, it is required to study and create a technology that is optimal for the n-TOPCon manufacturing process. © 2022 Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers.
