Many economically essential crops in Indonesia (such as coffee, tea, chocolate, or copra) require storage or drying under certain environmental conditions, especially temperature and humidity. The solar dryer dome, typically used for agricultural purposes in Indonesia, produces a sufficient amount of heat to increase the evaporation rate inside the dome and reduce the moisture content of the commodity. A hybrid solar dryer accompanied by a photovoltaic panel, fan, and ventilation system is generally suitable. The system can provide an optimum environment with minimum control. However, as the outdoor temperature and humidity change dramatically, such as at night time, more control is required. Based on Industry 4.0 technologies, we have developed a new kind of hybrid solar dryer that provides an optimum environment 24/7. The system, called Smart Dome 4.0, is an intelligent, low-cost, self-sufficient drying and storage system to support Indonesia Agriculture 4.0. The system has a local power generation unit to self-sustain the required energy and operate without connecting to the electricity grid. The system utilizes a machine-learning algorithm to predict the environmental condition and optimally uses self-generated electric power. The developed Smart Dome 4.0 technology is critical to producing a sustainable solar dome under drastic environmental dynamics. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Distributed Acoustic Sensors (DAS) are able to measure dynamic strain and temperature signals quantitatively along several kilometers of optical fiber using the properties of backscattering light. A drawback of DAS is the sensing resolution of around 1 meter long. This paper analyses the use of DAS as a vibration sensor for a thin plate structure using an acoustic excitation. A coiled method of arranging the sensing optical fibers enhances the measured signal and using a calibration method, the strain in the sensed region is obtained. The method can be used to characterize structures acoustically allowing the structure to detect the direction and reconstruct nearby acoustic events. Acoustic excitations were performed using a speaker at 1 meter distance to a 1 millimeter thick free-free 40 centimeters by 73 centimeter instrumented stainless steel plate inside an anechoic chamber. Results measured using reference microphones and accelerometers were compared to the optical fiber sensor through a Finite Element Model. The results demonstrate that the optical fiber system is able to measure the frequency response with an average 54 dB sound pressure level sound source chirp signal for flexural modes with a clear differentiation between angles of incidence up to 500 Hz.

In this paper, we propose a novel player behavior model called the action priority model (APM) for representing player action behaviors. A play log is stored based on the game grammar under analysis, and heuristic filtering rules are applied to eliminate uninteresting events. The proposed model uses sequences and tendencies of event types as the main mining criteria to extract significant player action behaviors. Action sequences reflect the interdependencies of different actions and how a player may use their insights about the game rules to form a (hidden) action priority list (APL) with respect to action types. By mining for significant events from play logs, we aim to produce the APM and APL for different players. In experiments, the fuzzy miner tool was used to analyze a few event logs for the World of Warcraft game to obtain some noticeable discoveries about the structural and timing patterns of effective players. Experimental results show that two players in the same class with similar contributions to encounters will have a similar mined APM and may not have a minimal delay in the timing of actions. Players with a high contribution to an encounter will have an APM like a simulated optimal player along with large thickness edges in the APM to indicate a significant routine of actions. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Analysis of the Brazilian Climate Data Influence on Soybean Pricing by Using Long Short-Term Memory Models

This work uses machine learning to verify whether the Brazilian climate influences international soybean price prediction. For this, climatic data, dollar quotes, inflation, and annual soybean production were collected from different data sources. Then, the collected data were pre-processed and grouped by Brazilian state. Afterward, data from the five most productive Brazilian states are chosen, such as Mato Grosso (MT), Mato Grosso do Sul (MS), Goiás (GO), Paraná (PR), and Rio Grande do Sul (RS). Afterward, predictive models are built using the long short-term memory (LSTM) method, which is applied in each chosen state dataset considering two different settings: with and without climatic data. Thus, two models were built for each Brazilian state, totaling ten predictors. In the experimental evaluation, when trained with climatic data, the PR model achieved the lowest values of root mean squared error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE). Regarding predictors trained without climate data, the RS and PR obtained the lowest values of RMSE and MAE, respectively. After conducting statistical hypothesis tests, no significant difference was found among models, stating, with 95% certainty, that, in this study, the Brazilian climatic data did not influence the model performance for predicting soybean prices. On the other hand, one of the main contributions of work is conducting an unprecedented study about soybean price prediction using Brazilian climatic data. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Tactile Displays Driven by Projected Light

Tactile displays that lend tangible form to digital content could transform computing interactions. However, achieving the resolution, speed, and dynamic range needed for perceptual fidelity remains challenging. We present a tactile display that directly converts projected light into visible tactile patterns via a photomechanical surface populated with millimeter-scale optotactile pixels. The pixels transduce incident light into mechanical displacements through photostimulated thermal gas expansion, yielding millimeter scale displacements with response times of 2 to 100 milliseconds. Employing projected light for power transmission and addressing renders these displays highly scalable. We demonstrate optically driven displays with up to 1,511 addressable pixels – several times more pixels than any prior tactile display attaining comparable performance. Perceptual studies confirm that these displays can reproduce diverse spatiotemporal tactile patterns with high fidelity. This research establishes a foundation for practical, versatile high-resolution tactile displays driven by light. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The heterogeneity of the microstructure and the anisotropy of the mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites (CFRP) are associated with complex damage mechanisms that make failure prediction highly challenging. Typical damage mechanisms for CFRP include: (i) interlaminar cracking (delamination), (ii) matrix cracking, and (iii) fiber breakage. X-ray computed tomography (CT) has been utilized recently to identify the complex damage in progressive failure of CFRP in 3D and 4D (3D spatial and 1D temporal). However, these scans contain a large amount of data (≈10 GB/mm3), which makes it challenging to extract mechanistic insights in a reasonable time frame. In previous work, we presented the first deep learning (DL) convolutional neural network (CNN) segmentation of multiclass microscale matrix damage in CFRP. The trained CNN segments complex and sparse composite matrix damage mechanism to ≈ 99.99% agreement, with nearly 100% of human time eliminated, providing higher accuracy compared to human segmentation. In this work, we developed CNN-based method for the automated segmentation of fiber breaks using synchrotron radiation-based CT (SRCT) scans that have been human-labeled. The model employed a U-Net full CNN as the high-level encoder (feature extraction)-decoder (feature localization) structure, and VGG16 as the deep CNN backbone via the publicly available Segmentation Models GitHub repository. An unbiased evaluation was performed comparing the machine vs. the human-labeled ground truth. Finally, active learning was presented for the machine-assisted relabeling of datasets containing fiber breaks. The deep learning-based automated segmentation method demonstrated accurate identification (> 90%) of fiber breakage for CFRP. © 2023 by DEStech Publications, Inc. and American Society for Composites. Local Sequential MCMC for Data Assimilation with Applications in Geoscience

This paper presents a new data assimilation (DA) scheme based on a sequential Markov Chain Monte Carlo (SMCMC) DA technique [36] which is provably convergent and has been recently used for filtering, particularly for high-dimensional non-linear, and potentially, non-Gaussian state-space models. Unlike particle filters, which can be considered exact methods and can be used for filtering non-linear, non-Gaussian models, SMCMC does not assign weights to the samples/particles, and therefore, the method does not suffer from the issue of weight-degeneracy when a relatively small number of samples is used. We design a localization approach within the SMCMC framework that focuses on regions where observations are located and restricts the transition densities included in the filtering distribution of the state to these regions. This results in immensely reducing the effective degrees of freedom and thus improving the efficiency. We test the new technique on high-dimensional (d ∼ 104 − 105) linear Gaussian model and non-linear shallow water models with Gaussian noise with real and synthetic observations. For two of the numerical examples, the observations mimic the data generated by the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission led by NASA, which is a swath of ocean height observations that changes location at every assimilation time step. We also use a set of ocean drifters' real observations in which the drifters are moving according the ocean kinematics and assumed to have uncertain locations at the time of assimilation. This research demonstrates the improvement in antenna gain by utilizing an EBG reflector. The EBG reflector includes a unit cell with grooves shaped like the letters M and W to mitigate surface waves at a frequency of 2.45 GHz. The suggested EBG reflector is constructed on an FR-4 substrate exhibiting a uniform dielectric constant of 4.3, a loss tangent of 0.025, and a thickness of 1.6 mm. Furthermore, the impact of boosting the antenna gain can be analyzed by the reflection phase diagram, which exhibits values ranging from +90° to -90° at the resonant frequency of the reflector. The proposed EBG reflector comprises 5x5 unit cells. The testing results of the reflector's performance, when integrated with a general dipole antenna, indicate that it can effectively respond to the resonant frequency of 2.45 GHz, with a |S11| level below -10 dB within the frequency range of 2.2 GHz to 2.6 GHz, thereby adequately covering the IEEE 802.11 b/g/n band. The suggested EBG reflector exhibits a gain of around 6.5 dBi at 2.45 GHz, indicating its efficacy in enhancing gain relative to the standard PEC reflector. Moreover, the radiation pattern is also directional. © 2025 IEEE.

Email spam detection is crucial for ensuring a positive user experience and maintaining communication security. This study presents a novel spam detection approach leveraging Logistic Regression, optimized through hyperparameter tuning and enhanced with Explainable Artificial Intelligence. The proposed method is evaluated on a large-scale dataset of emails collected from a real-world spam detection system. Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency is utilized for feature extraction, converting email text into numerical representations. XAI introduces interpretability by highlighting critical features such as "pill," "PHP," and "Businessweek," which indicate spam classification patterns. Metrics such as precision, recall, and the confusion matrix are employed to assess the model’s performance, ensuring a balanced evaluation. Hyperparameter optimization using Grid Search CV achieves an optimal regularization parameter (C = 100) and maximum iterations (maxiter=100), resulting in an impressive F1 score of 98.76%, accuracy of 98.82%, precision of 98.62%, and recall of 98.90%.
