The characteristic mode analysis (CMA) is formulated and implemented for the hydrodynamic volume integral equation (HDVIE) that is used to mathematically model electromagnetic field interactions and conduction current dynamics on nanoantennas and nanoscatterers. The proposed method produces excitation-independent characteristic hydrodynamic currents and the corresponding modal significance curves, providing useful information that can be used to optimize the performance of a nanoantenna. Numerical results demonstrate the reliability and the applicability of the proposed approach.

This study presents the design of a user-centered data visualization dashboard for stroke rehabilitation, which integrates the principles of visualization data analytics techniques in the field of healthcare. Addressing the complexities of visualizing for robotic bimanual rehabilitation, the design introduces novel methods to enhance data visualization, broadening monitoring capabilities, and improving the clarity of torque data. These enhancements lead to a clearer understanding of patient robot interactions. A prototype has been developed to visualize transparent torque data from a bimanual master slave robotic system, enabling healthcare professionals to monitor patient progress effectively. The dashboard features intuitive visual representations of master, slave, and assistive torques, simulating elbow joint movements through line and sunburst charts. Feedback from rehabilitation therapists during the design process ensures that the visualization approach is aligned with clinical needs. The findings suggest that the system can assist physiotherapists in devising personalized treatment strategies by providing actionable insights from the recorded data. However, additional research is needed to integrate real clinical data into the system for further enhancement and validation. This innovation has the potential to significantly improve stroke rehabilitation effectiveness and patient outcomes through a bimanual rehabilitation visualization and decision support system.

We propose, analyze, and experimentally verify a new proactive approach for robot social navigation driven by the robot's “opinion” for which way and by how much to pass human movers crossing its path. The robot forms an opinion over time according to nonlinear dynamics that depend on the robot's observations of human movers and its level of attention to these social cues. For these dynamics, it is guaranteed that when the robot's attention is greater than a critical value, deadlock in decision making is broken, and the robot rapidly forms a strong opinion, passing each human mover even if the robot has no bias nor evidence for which way to pass. We enable proactive rapid and reliable social navigation by having the robot grow its attention across the critical value when a human mover approaches. With human-robot experiments we demonstrate the flexibility of our approach and validate our analytical results on deadlock-breaking. We also show that a single design parameter can tune the trade-off between efficiency and reliability in human-robot passing. The new approach has the additional advantage that it does not rely on a predictive model of human behavior.

This paper introduces a novel hybrid genetic algorithm combined with data mining to solve a version of the early/tardy scheduling problem in which no unforced idle time may be inserted in a sequence. The chromosome representation of the problem is based on random keys and we use the Biased Random-Key Genetic Algorithm (BRKGA) to establish an order in which jobs are scheduled. A data mining component gathers data from the evolutionary steps of BRKGA and suggests chromosomes based on past observations. In this way, we address a key challenge in BRKGA - the exploration of solutions near an individual gene - by leveraging data-driven insights to refine and enhance the search space. Comparative analysis reveals that our hybrid algorithm significantly benefits from the pattern recognition capabilities of data mining, leading to improved scheduled efficiency. The results of a series of computational experiments underscore the potential of this hybrid approach that, although requiring slightly longer computational times, is better than the previous baseline BRKGA algorithm in terms of solution quality.
