In this innovative practice work-in-progress paper, enrollment data from five institutions was used to examine equity in undergraduate research through Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) programs. VIP is a model for undergraduate research in which large student teams are embedded in faculty-driven projects. The American Association of Colleges and Universities recognizes undergraduate research as a high-impact experience, associated with higher graduation rates and greater learning gains in college. Participation in multiple high-impact experiences yields cumulative gains to students from all backgrounds, and compensatory gains for minoritized and marginalized students. Nationally however, minoritized students, first-generation college students, and transfer students participate in undergraduate research at lower rates than their peers. In this study, VIP enrollments at five institutions (N = 6,651 over two semesters) were compared to demographics of the institutions to determine the degree to which programs achieved equity among historically underserved minorities, transfer students, first-generation college students, and by gender. Analysis accounted for demographics and level of participation of the academic units involved, comparing enrollments with what would be expected under equitable enrollment. Analyses were done for each institution and across the pooled sample. By institution, equity across categories varied. Across the pooled sample, results show small effects sizes for status as a historically underserved minority, very small effect sizes for first-generation students and transfer students, and slightly higher participation among women than men. The large-scale nature of VIP teams enables institutions to scale-up their undergraduate research offerings. This paper begins answering the question of whether this scaling increases access for marginalized populations, and the results are encouraging. Indoor positioning systems (IPS) are gaining higher attention recently due to the increased demand for indoor location aware services. Visible light communication (VLC) is a promising technology to use for IPS. In particular, received signal strength (RSS) based visible light positioning (VLP) systems are gaining high attention due to their low complexity and cost, in addition to higher positioning accuracy compared to their radio frequency (RF) counterparts. One of the main challenges in RSS based VLP systems is encountered when the receiver (the target) is tilted and not placed in parallel with the transmitters (the anchors). RSS based trilateration techniques require a computationally expensive and time-consuming process to solve the nonlinear problem of tilted receivers. Fingerprint based systems generally provide high positioning accuracy with short positioning time, and maybe used to circumvent the need to deal with the high complexity associated with tilted receivers. However, the design of a fingerprinting VLP system for tilted receiver has not been explored yet as far as receivers with a single photodetector (PD) are concerned. In this work, a fingerprint based VLP system for tilted receivers using artificial neural networks (ANN) is proposed, where different types of input features for training the positioning algorithm are studied. We show that using the components of the normal vector to the PD's surface in addition to RSS values provides an excellent positioning accuracy with an average positioning error of 25.41 cm and a remarkably low average positioning time less than $\mathbf{5} \boldsymbol{\mu} \boldsymbol{s}$ . In addition, important research directions for future work are discussed.

Carbon nanotube field effect transistor (CNFET) performance is primarily influenced by a variety of characteristics, such as nanotube diameter, operating voltage, pitch, the number of tubes, dielectric constant, and contact materials. In this study, the dielectric constant and the number of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were emphasized to analyze the propagation delay and average power dissipation of basic logic gates. Zirconium dioxide (ZrO 2 ), hafnium oxide (HfO 2 ), and silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) were used as dielectric materials. In this experiment, the Stanford CNFET model was utilized, and variable factors such as the number of CNTs and the dielectric constant $(K_{ox})$ accumulated on the nanotube gate's surface were diversified. The correlation coefficients of the delay, the average power, and the CNT numbers were also presented. Furthermore, the multi-objective genetic algorithm and the Rmethod were utilized to find the optimal K ox and the number of CNTs for minimizing the average dissipation power and the propagation delay of some logic gates designed with CNFET. For all the gates considered, the optimal number of CNTs is 4 while the dielectric constant is within the ranges of 19 to 24.

Optimal deployment of private 5G multi-access edge computing systems at smart factories: Using hybrid crow search algorithm

In smart factories, an increasing number of mobile intelligent devices are deployed to meet the growing demands for flexible manufacturing. These devices, equipped with various sensors, synchronize a substantial amount of data with cloud servers for real-time monitoring and control. Fifth generation mobile networks (5G) combined with multi-access edge computing (MEC) provide the capabilities for multiple connections, large-scale data transmission, and efficient response times, becoming the mainstream network architectures for the needs. Additionally, with the emerging trend of energy-saving, recent works have addressed energy consumption as a significant cost factor. However, most previous studies tended to focus solely on cloud servers, neglecting energy consumption at edge computing and underestimating the impact of heterogeneous mobile device. As the scope of smart factory networks continues to expand, the challenges become increasingly critical. This study presents a private 5G MEC system architecture tailored for smart panel factories. The concerned problem is formulated as an integer programming model, which determines deployment locations and quantities for MEC servers and 5G small cells, including picocells and femtocells, so as to minimize the overall deployment costs while meeting the constraints of connectivity, capacity, latency, coverage, serviceability, and energy consumption. Since the edge server deployment problem is NP-hard, this study further proposes a hybrid metaheuristic algorithm, CSAVNS, which combines the strengths of crow search algorithm (CSA) and variable neighborhood search (VNS). In the global search phase of CSA, the VNS local search is introduced to enhance the algorithm's capabilities. Experimental analysis demonstrates that the proposed CSAVNS outperforms other algorithms in terms of solution solving capabilities. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Given the success of deep learning (DL) for weed and disease identification over the past few years, it has gained traction within the precision agricultural research community. While there is a general notion that high-resolution images and a large imagery dataset are required for training DL-based computer vision models for accurately monitoring biotic or abiotic stress, there is no consensus on the ideal image resolution and dataset size. Furthermore, an in-depth understanding of the impact of data on DL model performance for stress monitoring in precision agricultural applications is lacking. Therefore, this study investigates how the performance of a deep learning model, ResNet50, is influenced by: the size of input images, the size and composition of the training dataset. First, baseline testing accuracies were obtained for publicly available and custom dataset of corn diseases for a combination of seven training sample sizes and eight input image sizes. The highest testing accuracy of 97.63% was achieved for weed identification using the publicly available DeepWeeds dataset when the largest training sample size of 80% was used with input image sizes of 299 x 299 pixels. Disease identification results were uniform across different training sample sizes and input image sizes, consistently resulting in testing accuracies greater than 95% for the publicly available PlantVillage dataset. For the custom CD&S corn disease dataset with complex field conditions, testing accuracies of up to 100% were initially reported with various combinations of training sample sizes and input image sizes. However, for all three datasets, consistently low performance was observed when using 100 training samples and the lowest image resolution of 150x150 pixels. In the subsequent experiments, dataset composition was altered for the CD&S dataset. In this paper we consider Bayesian parameter inference for partially observed fractional Brownian motion (fBM) models. The approach we follow is to time-discretize the hidden process and then to design Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms to sample from the posterior density on the parameters given data. We rely on a novel representation of the time discretization, which seeks to sample from an approximation of the posterior and then corrects via importance sampling;the approximation reduces the time (in terms of total observation time T) by O(T). This method is extended by using a multilevel MCMC method which can reduce the computational cost to achieve a given mean square error (MSE) versus using a single time discretization. As Metaverse emerges as the next-generation Internet paradigm, the ability to efficiently generate content is paramount. AI-Generated Content (AIGC) emerges as a key solution, yet the resource-intensive nature of large Generative AI (GAI) models presents challenges. To address this issue, we introduce an AIGC-as-a-Service (AaaS) architecture, which deploys AIGC models in wireless edge networks to ensure broad AIGC services accessibility for Metaverse users. Nonetheless, an important aspect of providing personalized user experiences requires carefully selecting AIGC Service Providers (ASPs) capable of effectively executing user tasks, which is complicated by environmental uncertainty and variability. Addressing this gap in current research, we introduce the AI-Generated Optimal Decision (AGOD) algorithm, a diffusion model-based approach for generating the optimal ASP selection decisions. Integrating AGOD with Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), we develop the Deep Diffusion Soft Actor-Critic (D2SAC) algorithm, enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of ASP selection. Our comprehensive experiments demonstrate that D2SAC outperforms seven leading DRL algorithms. Furthermore, the proposed AGOD algorithm has the potential for extension to various optimization problems in wireless networks, positioning it as a promising approach for future research on AIGC-driven services. The advent of digital technology has contributed to experiencing liquid lifestyles and flexible work arrangements with different mobility routes and targets. Escaping the exhausting routine of commuting to and from work has been a key driver of digital nomadism, a phenomenon that has become increasingly widespread across the globe and is often centered around cross-border travel and expatriate settlement. Due to their frequent mobility, digital nomads face unique challenges in fostering a sense of place-belongingness compared to most other types of workers. Despite the popularity of digital nomadic work/life in the current public discourse, there is no standardized guidebook for understanding how digital technology already supports or could potentially support the sense of place-belongingness among these voluntary migrants. Motivated by this line of research, in our paper, we propose an initial guide with practical methodological considerations on how to investigate this phenomenon using qualitative and quantitative materials. Such studies can assist strategists and organizations in attracting new talent and fostering more inclusive environments.

Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have become the go-to method for medical imaging classification on various imaging modalities for binary and multiclass problems. Deep CNNs extract spatial features from image data hierarchically, with deeper layers learning more relevant features for the classification application. Despite the high predictive accuracy, usability lags in practical applications due to the black-box model perception. Model explainability and interpretability are essential for successfully integrating artificial intelligence into healthcare practice. This work addresses the challenge of an explainable deep learning model for the prediction of the severity of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). AD diagnosis and prognosis heavily rely on neuroimaging information, particularly magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We present a deep learning model framework that integrates a local data-driven interpretation method that explains the relationship between the predicted AD severity from the CNN and the input MR brain image. The deep explainer uses SHapley Additive exPlanation values to quantity the contribution of different brain regions utilized by the CNN to predict outcomes. We conduct a comparative analysis of three high-performing CNN models: DenseNet121, DenseNet169, and Inception-ResNet-v2. The framework shows high sensitivity and specificity in the test sample of subjects with varying levels of AD severity. We also correlated five key AD neurocognitive assessment outcome measures and the APOE genotype biomarker with model misclassifications to facilitate a better understanding of model performance.
