Finding appropriate reaction conditions that yield high product rates in chemical synthesis is crucial for the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. However, due to the vast chemical space, conducting experiments for each possible reaction condition is impractical. Consequently, models such as QSAR (Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship) or ML (Machine Learning) have been developed to predict the outcomes of reactions and illustrate how reaction conditions affect product yield. Despite these advancements, inferring all possible combinations remains computationally prohibitive when using a conventional CPU. In this work, we explore using a Digital Annealing Unit (DAU) to tackle these large-scale optimization problems more efficiently by solving Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO). Two types of QUBO models are constructed in this work: one using quantum annealing and the other using ML. Both models are built and tested on four high-throughput experimentation (HTE) datasets and selected Reaxys datasets. Our results suggest that the performance of models is comparable to classical ML methods (i.e., Random Forest and Multilayer Perceptron (MLP)), while the inference time of our models requires only seconds with a DAU. Additionally, in campaigns involving active learning and autonomous design of reaction conditions to achieve higher reaction yield, our model demonstrates significant improvements by adding new data, showing promise of adopting our method in the iterative nature of such problem settings. Our method can also accelerate the screening of billions of reaction conditions, achieving speeds millions of times faster than traditional computing units in identifying superior conditions. Therefore, leveraging the DAU with our developed QUBO models has the potential to be a valuable tool for innovative chemical synthesis. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Characterization of Fluorinated Polyimide Films

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) have been used to characterize the polyimide film based on 4,4′ hexafluoro-isopropylidene -bis pthalic anhydride (HFDA) and 4,4′ -bis (4-aminophenoxy) biphenyl (APBP). Films of varying thicknesses made from diluted precursors were studied by IR and XPS. An elemental analysis and a tentative peak assignment for C 1s in XPS is presented. The HFDA-APBP thick films are stoichiometric in composition and binding energies are in good agreement with data on hexafluorodianhydride-oxydianiline (HFDA-ODA). For thinner films, certain chemical modifications were observed at high cure temperatures.

Many different industries are currently making substantial use of the Internet of Things (IoT). IoT is the process through which electronic devices communicate with their surrounding virtual environment by continuously exchanging data via sensors. Due to increased IoT security concerns, digital forensic investigators now possess greater knowledge and abilities to investigate IoT devices. IoT-DigFor are required in terms of cybercrime due to the rapid growth in the number of electronic devices and the collection and consumption of enormous amounts of data. IoT systems with billions of devices have produced a significant amount of evidence, which presents a significant challenge to digital investigators and practitioners who must connect with IoT devices to conduct fast and thorough investigations into cybercrimes. This article presents detailed information about forensics in the IoT environment. The IoT forensic paradigm and the challenges that design-based security requirements and IoT system security offer for IoT-DigFor are covered in great detail at the beginning of the article.

Vibrations transmitted throughout the hand and arm during touch contact play a central role in haptic science and engineering but are challenging to model or experimentally characterize. Here, we present SkinSource, a data-driven toolbox for predicting skin vibrations across the upper limb in response to user-specified input forces. The toolbox leverages impulse response measurements that encode the physics of vibration transmission across the hands and arms of four participants and provides software tools for analyzing the predicted skin responses. We show that the SkinSource predictions closely match experimental measurements and confirm the underlying assumption of linear vibration transmission in the skin. We also demonstrate through several usage examples how SkinSource can act as a versatile computational platform for haptic research applications, such as characterizing vibrotactile transmission in the skin, engineering haptic interfaces, and investigating touch perception.

Hybrid ACO and PSO to minimize makespan in job shop scheduling problems

The lowest time search in the dataset that E. Taillard utilized employs a heuristic approach based on tabu search techniques to get the predicted solution. Glover’s study gives a broad description of tabu search, which is commonly encountered in Taillard’s job shop scheduling difficulties and Widmer et al.’s flow shop sorting challenges. Although tabu search is relatively simple to use and typically yields excellent results, it takes a long time to complete. In this research a hybrid ACO and PSO was carried out to minimize makespan in the Job Shop Scheduling Problem which was used as sourced from benchmark data which is secondary data obtained from E. Taillard “Benchmarks for basic scheduling problems” which consists of job shop matrix data (job × machine) measuring 4 × 4, 5 × 5, 7 × 7, 10 × 10, 15 × 15, 20 × 20, 30 × 15, 30 × 20, 50 × 15 and 50 × 20. Hybrid is carried out by calculating the Pbest value, namely the process position of each job on the machine to get the best solution using the PSO algorithm. Next, calculate the Gbest (Global best) value for the position of each job on the best machine on the entire machine using the PSO algorithm and initialize the ACO parameters using the PBest and Gbest values. The results of research on datasets with sizes 10×10, 15×15, 20×20, 30×15, 30×20, 50×15 and 50×20 produce smaller makespan compared to the lower bound on the dataset with an average minimum makespan improvement value of 1.184.

Monetary authorities globally have studied central bank digital currency (CBDC) for wholesale and retail applications since the 1990s. Besides countering private cryptocurrencies' influence, central banks have also explored other benefits of CBDC, such as improving their financial oversight, enhancing digital payment systems, and reducing transaction fees and friction. For several years, the Bank of Thailand has also invested in research and development of CBDC, including retail use cases. However, an optimized design for an official launch of a retail CBDC in Thailand has yet to be determined, resembling fragmented progress observed among other central banks. This research has leveraged disruptive innovation theory to provide a fresh perspective on retail CBDC as potentially disruptive financial innovations. Additionally, it has proposed an open innovation-based methodology to determine industry preferences concerning twelve design considerations for retail CBDC and their impact on nine indicators of disruptive innovation. Data has been collected and analyzed from 98 respondents outside the Bank of Thailand, all possessing relevant expertise or experience in electronic payments. Crosstab and logistic regression analyses have indicated that retail CBDC in Thailand could embark on a disruptive innovation trajectory by adhering to defined design choices. Significantly, entering a new detached market has been identified as the most promising entry point, accompanied by explicit recommendations on nine out of twelve design considerations. © 2025 The Authors

The Role of Heterogeneity in Autonomous Perimeter Defense Problems

When is heterogeneity in the composition of an autonomous robotic team beneficial and when is it detrimental? We investigate and answer this question in the context of a minimally viable model that examines the role of heterogeneous speeds in perimeter defense problems, where defenders share a total allocated speed budget. We consider two distinct problem settings and develop strategies based on dynamic programming and on local interaction rules. We present a theoretical analysis of both approaches and our results are extensively validated using simulations. Interestingly, our results demonstrate that the viability of heterogeneous teams depends on the amount of information available to the defenders. Moreover, our results suggest a universality property: across a wide range of problem parameters the optimal ratio of the speeds of the defenders remains nearly constant. Large language models have demonstrated impressive universal capabilities across a wide range of open-ended tasks and have extended their utility to encompass multi-modal conversations. However, existing methods encounter challenges in effectively handling both image and video understanding, particularly with limited visual tokens. In this work, we introduce Chat-UniVi, a Unified Vision-language model capable of comprehending and engaging in conver-sations involving images and videos through a unified visual representation. Specifically, we employ a set of dynamic visual tokens to uniformly represent images and videos. This representation framework empowers the model to ef-ficiently utilize a limited number of visual tokens to simul-taneously capture the spatial details necessary for images and the comprehensive temporal relationship required for videos. Moreover, we leverage a multi-scale representation, enabling the model to perceive both high-level seman-tic concepts and low-level visual details. Notably, Chat-UniVi is trained on a mixed dataset containing both images and videos, allowing direct application to tasks involving both mediums without requiring any modifications. Exten-sive experimental results demonstrate that Chat- UniVi con-sistently outperforms even existing methods exclusively de-signed for either images or videos. In the era of the global village, frequent cross-border trade in goods has made container transportation a significant part in delivery of cargo. However, rollover accidents of container trucks often occur because of tall truck height, improper cargo stowage or crooked roads. Therefore, how to find the optimal center of gravity (CG) of the packed cargo remains an issue that the transportation industry should not neglect. To optimize cargo stability and reduce the incidence of rollovers, this paper proposes a genetic algorithm that scores the cargo stacking process to find the best CG of the cargo based on the CG of the vehicle. According to the deviation angle and the point closest to the best CG, we can Figure out the optimal cargo stacking method.
