Identifying chemical compounds is essential in several areas of science and engineering. Laser-based techniques are promising for autonomous compound detection because the optical response of materials encodes enough electronic and vibrational information for remote chemical identification. This has been exploited using the fingerprint region of infrared absorption spectra, which involves a dense set of absorption peaks that are unique to individual molecules, thus facilitating chemical identification. However, optical identification using visible light has not been realized. Using decades of experimental refractive index data in the scientific literature of pure organic compounds and polymers over a broad range of frequencies from the ultraviolet to the far-infrared, we develop a machine learning classifier that can accurately identify organic species based on a single-wavelength dispersive measurement in the visible spectral region, away from absorption resonances. The optical classifier proposed here could be applied to autonomous material identification protocols or applications. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In the context of achieving Good Corporate Governance (GCG) in hospitals, among others, it is carried out with control and supervision, including in the case of hospital facility maintenance installations. Besides that, the hospital needs to improve its services. The asset reporting system is one of the high needs in this field, so it requires a solution that can deal with existing problems. Unfortunately, the current reporting system so far is more likely to be conventional, such as by telephone. This study proposes a new solution to the hospital facility maintenance reporting process, namely by utilising smartphone-based applications that directly connected to the server. So, the information distributed to the competent parties. This solution can speed up the reporting process and actions. Also, save the historical equipment that is available from each service room - the results of this study used as a hospital facility maintenance reporting system. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

This study aims to know the comparison design of electric motorcycle using hybrid systems (BLDC Motor) based on parameter testing, i.e., with and without load. The design of electric motorcycles is centered on determining a feasibility study comparing engine drive with electric drive. Electric vehicles are the answer to decreasing petroleum supplies and environmental concerns that are worsening every year due to oil-fueled cars’ exhaust emissions. The proportion of motor vehicle exhaust as an air pollution source is between 60 and 70 percent. The global decrease of fossil fuels is also a critical issue that has yet to be handled. A descriptive statistic methodology was employed in this work as an analytical tool. The results showed when the speed increases, the efficiency of the BLDC motor would increase; this is, of course, following the principle of Orsted’s law and Lorentz force. When compared to the no-load test, the efficiency by using the load will be greater because when the BLDC motor works with a load, it will require greater torque due to an increase in load so that it takes a large amount of power so that it will increase the efficiency of the BLDC motor. When compared in terms of using the battery, the time of using the battery with no load will be longer because it does not require too much current.

We report ultrastrong coupling of the cyclotron resonance of a two-dimensional electron gas in a GaAs quantum well to terahertz cavity photons under extreme confinement to the nanometer scale. This was realized by an array of nano-slots fabricated close to the quantum well layer on the GaAs substrate. Our terahertz magnetospectroscopic measurements revealed two polariton branches as a function of applied magnetic field. While the photon-like part of the two polariton branches was clearly observed, the matter-like part was generally elusive. Our electromagnetic simulations quantitatively reproduce our observation for the upper-polariton branch. However, for the lower-polariton branch, our simulations predict a pronounced resonance, which was absent in experimental spectra. This discrepancy may be a consequence of the breakdown of the dipole approximation in this extreme confinement situation.

The optimal control input for linear systems can be solved from algebraic Riccati equation (ARE), from which it remains questionable to get the form of the exact solution. In engineering, the acceptable numerical solutions of ARE can be found by iteration or optimization. Recently, the gradient descent based numerical solutions has been proven effective to approximate the optimal ones. This paper introduces this method to tracking problem for heterogeneous linear systems. Differently, the parameters in the dynamics of the linear systems are all assumed to be unknown, which is intractable since the gradient as well as the allowable initialization needs the prior knowledge of system dynamics. To solve this problem, the method named dynamic regressor extension and mix (DREM) is improved to estimate the parameter matrices in finite time. Besides, a discounted factor is introduced to ensure the existence of optimal solutions for heterogeneous systems. Safety is always one of the most critical principles for a system to be controlled. This paper investigates a safety-critical control scheme for unknown structured systems by using the control barrier function (CBF) method. Benefited from the dynamic regressor extension and mixing (DREM), an extended element-wise parameter identification law is utilized to dismiss the uncertainty. On the one hand, it is shown that the proposed control scheme can always guarantee the safety in the identification process with noised signal injection excitation, which was not considered in the previous study. On the other hand, the element-wise estimation process in DREM can minimize conservatism of the safe adaptive process compared to other existing adaptive CBF algorithms. The stability as well as the forward invariance of the presented safe control-estimation scheme is proved. Furthermore, the robustness of the scheme under bounded disturbances is analyzed, where a robust CBF with modest conditions is used to ensure safety. The framework is illustrated by simulations on adaptive cruise control, where the slope resistance of the following vehicle is robustly estimated in finite time against small disturbances and the potential crash risk is avoided by the proposed safe control scheme. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

Olive activated biochar (OAB) was prepared from waste de-oiled olive pomace (sansa esausta, SE) through carbonization followed by combined KOH and thermal activation. The activation process was optimized using central composite design (CCD) with pyrolysis temperature, activation time and KOH to pyrolized SE mass ratio (KOH/PSE) as independent variables, and yield, methylene blue number (MBN) and iodine number (ID) as responses. Optimized OAB was subjected to fixed bed adsorption of 100 mg L-1 methylene blue dye. Numerical optimization resulted in optimum process setting of 362°C pyrolysis temperature, 61-min activation time and 0.81 KOH/PSE under which the optimized activated biochar produced 31% OAB, MBN of 679 and ID of 899. Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models best fit the fixed bed adsorption data implying that methylene blue adsorption conforms to Langmuir isotherm and obeys pseudo-second order reversible reaction kinetics with no axial dispersion. The theoretical adsorption capacity of OAB is 131 mg g-1 with theoretical time required for 50% sorbate breakthrough of 54.69 h. These results show the potential application of OAB in dye adsorption. © 2020 The Authors, published by EDP Sciences.

Knee injuries are difficult to accurately diagnose. The manual evaluation relies on many subjective factors such as physician experience, swelling, patient guarding, and the severity of the injury. These factors can lead to an inaccurate or incomplete diagnosis, resulting in less than optimal treatment and recovery. Knee injuries are very common among athletes and can occur during the day to day activities, with many resulting in tears to one or more of the four ligaments. For evaluation, a physician manually manipulates the knee with a series of standard tests. Even though these standard manual tests are considered best practice, they are known to lead to some inaccuracies with upwards of 1 in 8 patients being misdiagnosed due to testing deficiencies. Imaging by MRI is used to support the diagnosis if available, though not available to all patients due to cost and time requirements. This purpose of this project was to develop and test a wearable diagnostic system contained within a sleeve over the knee. Incorporated sensors were used to monitor movement and electromyographic activity to determine quantitative measurements toward a diagnosis. The movement and displacement monitoring subsystems were tested on a constructed model of the lower leg and knee. Preliminary results have shown accurate readings with an average percent error of 1% for range of motion testing and 3% (0.1 to 0.2 mm) for laxity testing. This measurement determined by this system could be reported to a physician who could use when making a diagnosis. Improved diagnosis would guide appropriate treatment and contribute to improved recovery.

Trained and optimized for typical and fluent speech, speech AI works poorly for people with speech diversities, often interrupting them and misinterpreting their speech. The increasing deployment of speech AI in automated phone menus, AI-conducted job interviews, and everyday devices poses tangible risks to people with speech diversities. To mitigate these risks, this workshop aims to build a multidisciplinary coalition and set the research agenda for fair and accessible speech AI. Bringing together a broad group of academics and practitioners with diverse perspectives, including HCI, AI, and other relevant fields such as disability studies, speech language pathology, and law, this workshop will establish a shared understanding of the technical challenges for fair and accessible speech AI, as well as its ramifications in design, user experience, policy, and society. In addition, the workshop will invite and highlight first-person accounts from people with speech diversities, facilitating direct dialogues and collaboration between speech AI developers and the impacted communities. The key outcomes of this workshop include a summary paper that synthesizes our learnings and outlines the roadmap for improving speech AI for people with speech diversities, as well as a community of scholars, practitioners, activists, and policy makers interested in driving progress in this domain. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Frozen water pipes lead to leaks that result in property damage and repair costs. Frozen water pipes not only occur in northern climates, but also in more moderate climates that have occasional periods of temperatures below the freezing point. Water pipes at high risk for ice formation include ones outside of buildings, in poorly insulated structures or in seasonal buildings that are not heated during the winter months. Methods of protection include heating the building, insulation and heat tape on exposed water pipes, turning off the water supply and draining all pipes of water, or turning on a water valve to allow a continual flow of water through the pipes during the entire period having risk of low temperatures. The flow would hinder ice formation in the pipes. These protective measures have associated costs for equipment, heating fuel, and water loss. If the low temperature drops further or is sustained for longer periods than expected, there would still be a risk of frozen pipes. The purpose of this project was to develop and test a prototype system to monitor temperature, and initiate intermittent bursts of water flow only when temperatures are low enough to have risk of ice formation in the water pipes. The prototype utilized a temperature sensor, Arduino microcontroller, power supply, relay switch, and solenoid valve. The solenoid valve was incorporated into the water facet of a sink. When the sensor detected temperatures below the threshold of 25°C, intermittent bursts of flow were initiated, with 20 seconds of water flow followed by 2 minutes of no flow. Each flow event was recorded in a web service. A HTTP Get request was transmitted to a Google App Script program that stored the date and time in a Google Sheet. The owner or manager could remotely monitor the intermittent flow events. © 2019 IEEE.
