Setting a fixed pruning rate and/or specified threshold for pruning filters in convolutional layers has been widely used to reduce the number of parameters required in the convolutional neural networks (CNN) model. However, it fails to fully prune redundant filters for different layers whose redundant filters vary with layers. To overcome this disadvantage, we propose a new backward filter pruning algorithm using a sorted bipartite graph- and binary search-based (SBGBS-based) clustering and decreasing pruning rate (DPR) approach. We first represent each filter of the last layer by a bipartite graph K1,n, with one root mean set and one n-weight set, where n denotes the number of weights in the filter. Next, according to the accuracy loss tolerance, an SBGBS-based clustering method is used to partition all filters into clusters as maximal as possible. Then, for each cluster, we retain the filter corresponding to the bipartite graph with the median root mean among n root means in the cluster, but we discard the other filters in the same cluster. Following the DPR approach, we repeat the above SBGBS-based filtering pruning approach to the backward layer until all layers are processed. Based on the CIFAR-10 and MNIST datasets, the proposed filter pruning algorithm has been deployed into VGG-16, AlexNet, LeNet, and ResNet. With similar accuracy, the thorough experimental results have demonstrated the substantial parameters and floating-point operations reduction merits of our filter pruning algorithm relative to the existing filter pruning methods. © 2021, CC BY.

We present the initial stages of development of a Finite Element Method-based time-dependent elastic numerical model which seeks to support the employment of our Optical Coherence Elastography system for assessing murine retinal elasticity. The current model is able to reconstruct displacement maps in both homogeneous and heterogeneous domains with errors up to a few hundredths relatively to a known exact displacement map, within 1 millisecond. The results demonstrate the robustness of the numerical algorithm under different elastic domains, and model parametrization with real Optical Coherence Elastography data is already in progress.

This essay examines how Generative AI (GenAI) is rapidly transforming design practices and how discourse often falls into over-simplified narratives that impede meaningful research and practical progress. We identify and deconstruct five prevalent "semantic stopsigns"—reductive framings about GenAI in design that halt deeper inquiry and limit productive engagement. Reflecting upon two expert workshops at ACM conferences and semi-structured interviews with design practitioners, we analyze how these stopsigns manifest in research and practice. Our analysis develops mid-level knowledge that bridges theoretical discourse and practical implementation, helping designers and researchers interrogate common assumptions about GenAI in their own contexts. By recasting these stopsigns into more nuanced frameworks, we provide the design research community with practical approaches for thinking about and working with these emerging technologies. © 2025, CC BY.

This study aims to monitor element-specific nutrient information during hydroponic cultivation by IoT-interfaced miniaturized ion sensors. Because of size, cost, and manufacturing advantages, solid-contact ion-selective electrodes (SCISEs) were fabricated as an ion sensor array and interfaced with wireless embedded-systems to construct an IoT nutrient sensor system (IoNSS) for the first time. The entire IoNSS framework was composed of (i) a nutrient solution sampling and sensing module with SCISEs controlled by an Arduino Due® microcontroller, (ii) a Wio Terminal® microcontroller for automated procedure setting, data recording, and wireless transmission, (iii) a private cloud server (a Network Attached Storage equipped with Node-RED® and MongoDB®) for data management, and (iv) MQTT webpage-based interactive interfaces. In experiments, we found that potentiometric signal resolution and noise of the Arduino-interfaced SCISEs were significantly improved and approached to instrumental DAQ-like quality by additional delta-sigma ADC (ADS1115®) chip conditioning. This facilitated cost-effective harvest of precise and high-quality IoT ion sensor data. Before on-site applications, each SCISE was two-point calibrated in multiple-ion solutions and was checked with the fixed interference method. The ion concentration measurements were also compared with those of commercial ISEs and ion chromatography. To test the system's feasibility, the IoNSS was applied to cyber-monitoring of K+, NO3–, and NH4+ concentrations during two-week hydroponic cultivation of arugula (E. vesicaria) in an indoor plant factory (in Northern Taiwan) with a modified Cornell solution and an outdoor greenhouse (in Southern Taiwan) with a modified Yamasaki solution, respectively. It was demonstrated that the IoNSS was capable of real-time observation of the crop's nitrate/ammonium utilization and nutrient solution's EC-element dependency. Reduced order modelling using parameterized non-uniform boundary conditions in room acoustic simulations

Quick simulations for iterative evaluations of multi-design variables and boundary conditions are essential to find the optimal acoustic conditions in building design. We propose to use the reduced basis method (RBM) for realistic room acoustic scenarios where the surfaces have inhomogeneous acoustic properties, which enables quick evaluations of changing absorption materials for different surfaces in room acoustic simulations. The RBM has shown its benefit to speed up room acoustic simulations by three orders of magnitude for uniform boundary conditions. This study investigates the RBM with two main focuses, 1) various source positions in diverse geometries, e.g., square, rectangular, L-shaped, and disproportionate room. 2) Inhomogeneous surface absorption in 2D and 3D by parameterizing numerous acoustic parameters of surfaces, e.g., the thickness of a porous material, cavity depth, switching between a frequency independent (e.g., hard surface) and frequency dependent boundary condition. Results of numerical experiments show speedups of more than two orders of magnitude compared to a high fidelity numerical solver in a 3D case where reverberation time varies within one just noticeable difference in all the frequency octave bands. © 2022, CC BY.

Entanglement engineering of optomechanical systems by reinforcement learning

Entanglement is fundamental to quantum information science and technology, yet controlling and manipulating entanglement — so-called entanglement engineering — for arbitrary quantum systems remains a formidable challenge. There are two difficulties: the fragility of quantum entanglement and its experimental characterization. We develop a model-free deep reinforcement-learning (RL) approach to entanglement engineering, in which feedback control together with weak continuous measurement and partial state observation is exploited to generate and maintain desired entanglement. We employ quantum optomechanical systems with linear or nonlinear photon-phonon interactions to demonstrate the workings of our machine-learning-based entanglement engineering protocol. In particular, the RL agent sequentially interacts with one or multiple parallel quantum optomechanical environments, collects trajectories, and updates the policy to maximize the accumulated reward to create and stabilize quantum entanglement over an arbitrary amount of time. The machine-learning-based model-free control principle is applicable to the entanglement engineering of experimental quantum systems in general. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Robust orbit determination requires iterative multiple hypothesis analysis with the goal of using evidence to infer the most plausible states and model parameters regarding the behavior of an anthropogenic space object (a.k.a. a spacecraft) as possible, a process that can be both time and labor intensive. To increase the efficiency and accuracy of this analysis, we provide an analytic application capable of comprehensively and concurrently displaying multiple orbit determination solutions, leveraging contemporary data visualization techniques. This work details the design and visualization decisions made in the creation of the "Orbit Determination Dashboard," a tool aimed at giving users an interactive work-space for understanding how changes to input parameters defining the space environment, spacecraft features, sensor models and more affect their orbit determination solutions. © 2021, Univelt Inc. Cost-effective millimeter wave antennas are fundamental for the deployment of the next generation of terrestrial and satellite communication systems. The increase of the operation frequency changes the antenna design paradigm, where high gain and wide-angle beam steering are fundamental requisites. Electronic scanning approaches still face significant technological challenges, increasing the antenna costs. Therefore, low-cost designs based on mechanical steering are still relevant. The Risley prism (beam steering concept adapted from optics) is attracting significant attention in the antenna community as it can provide wide-angle azimuth and zenith beam coverage. However, this scanning mechanism tends to have high side lobe levels with typical prism implementations in the microwave domain. In this work, we use a new framework (recently proposed by the authors) based on a co-design of the phase correction of the two rotating surfaces, instead of considering each surface as a separate prism (the conventional approach). In our previous work, the SLL mitigation was demonstrated using fully dielectric surfaces composed of hollow square dielectric prisms. However, these unit cells are far from being the optimal solution for the design of transmit arrays, due to their thickness $(1.4\lambda)$ and high insertion losses (1.7 dB). Herein, we design a set of multilayer metallized unit cell with thickness 0.3 $\lambda$ and insertion losses below -1 dB. We show by full-wave simulations that the previously reported SLL mitigation achieved with the generalized Risley Prism approach is indeed a general result also effective using multilayer transmit-arrays.

Cost-effective multibeam millimeter wave antenna solutions are required to enable the deployment of 5G and beyond systems operating in the frequency range 2 (FR2). The tradeoff between system complexity and RF requirements (such as high gain, number of beams, beam forming/scanning capability, etc.) is a challenging problem fomenting the development of new antennas. Spatially fed transmit-arrays (TAs) where the aperture is illuminated by a planar array placed in a focal plane, is a canonical solution. However, the design is constrained by the focal distance to aperture diameter ratio (F/D). On the one hand, reducing the F/D allows designing more compact feeding array elements, on the other hand, it limits the maximum angle coverage due to scanning aberrations. In this work, we show that a TA optimized for operating simultaneously with low F/D and wide-angle coverage can improve the performance of this classical configuration. We design a Ka-band multibeam antenna with a TA fed by a 19x5 array of standard WR38 waveguide operating with F/D=0.34. It provides 25 dBi of gain with scan losses below 3 dB when scanning in a zenith plane up to -55 degrees, covering 80 degrees (−55 to 25 degrees) with cross-over levels around 3 dB.

This paper provides a comprehensive overview of working memory, a crucial cognitive construct for learning, reasoning, and intellectual abilities. It introduces Baddeley and Hitch’s multi-component model, highlighting the construct’s essential role in facilitating learning, comprehension, problem-solving, and attention. The paper then analyzes four key models: Baddeley’s multicomponent framework, Cowan’s integrated memory network model, Engle’s attentional control-based model, and Oberauer’s tripartite structure, exploring their shared and differing perspectives. Recent studies on working memory using electroencephalogram are reviewed, identifying core frequency bands associated with cognitive states and predicting individual working memory capacity from electroencephalogram. Conventional working memory assessment methods are also discussed, emphasizing their relative advantages and limitations based on specific goals and practical considerations. Overall, this paper integrates theoretical models, neural correlates, and practical applications to provide a comprehensive overview of working memory research, highlighting its interdisciplinary nature for future studies.
