An energy-aware routing method using firefly algorithm for flying ad hoc networks

Flying ad-hoc networks (FANETs) include a large number of drones, which communicate with each other based on an ad hoc model. These networks provide new opportunities for various applications such as military, industrial, and civilian applications. However, FANETs have faced with many challenges like high-speed nodes, low density, and rapid changes in the topology. As a result, routing is a challenging issue in these networks. In this paper, we propose an energy-aware routing scheme in FANETs. This scheme is inspired by the optimized link state routing (OLSR). In the proposed routing scheme, we estimate the connection quality between two flying nodes using a new technique, which utilizes two parameters, including ratio of sent/received of hello packets and connection time. Also, our proposed method selects multipoint relays (MPRs) using the firefly algorithm. It chooses a node with high residual energy, high connection quality, more neighborhood degree, and higher willingness as MPR. Finally, our proposed scheme creates routes between different nodes based on energy and connection quality. Our proposed routing scheme is simulated using the network simulator version 3 (NS3). We compare its simulation results with the greedy optimized link state routing (G-OLSR) and the optimized link state routing (OLSR). These results show that our method outperforms G-OLSR and OLSR in terms of delay, packet delivery rate, throughput, and energy consumption. However, our proposed routing scheme increases slightly routing overhead compared to G-OLSR. © 2023, The Author(s).

Introduction: Global warming is intensified by atmospheric pollution, with industrial activities significantly contributing to this issue. This study investigates air pollution levels in the industrial area of Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, a developing South Asian nation grappling with severe air quality threats. Study area: This study was designed to assess the pollution levels in the air of industrial area of Islamabad, Pakistan Methodology: Fine (size < 2.5µm: PM_2.5) and coarse (size between 2.5 and 10 µm: PM_2.5–10) particulate matter samples were collected on Polycarbonate air filters for three seasons in 2023. The elemental composition of PM was quantified using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Results: The average PM_2.5 (40.42 µg m⁻³) and PM_2.5–10 (221 µg m⁻³) concentrations exceeded Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (Pak-EPA) limits (PM_2.5: 35 µg m⁻³;PM_2.5–10: 150 µg m⁻³, respectively). In PM_2.5, Na showed the highest mean concentration (8670 ng m⁻³), As the lowest (40 ng m⁻³);in PM_2.5–10, Ca was highest (5476 ng m⁻³), Zr lowest (28 ng m⁻³). Seasonal variations revealed for PM_2.5–10 Ca peaked at 7800 ng m⁻³ in autumn, with Mg, Si, Fe, and Al fluctuating significantly, while toxic elements As, Pb, Co and Cr decreased from spring to autumn. In PM_2.5, Ca peaked at 7043 ng m⁻³ and Na remained elevated in spring, with crustal and toxic metals concentration decreasing from spring to autumn. Depositional flux was high for Ca and Ba in PM_2.5–10, and Na, Cr, and Cu in PM_2.5. The Enrichment factor and pollution index indicated higher contamination by Cr, Cu, Pb, S, Zn, Ni, As, Li, Mo, Sn, and Ag. Data sharing between different organizations is critical in supporting decision making in civil infrastructure engineering projects (e.g., transportation projects). Understanding the characteristics of data-sharing-related factors in civil infrastructure engineering is crucial for the civil engineering community to identify the priorities in promoting data sharing. The ASCE Data Sensing and Analysis (DSA) Committee initiated an investigation on data-sharing barriers in civil infrastructure engineering. This work produced (1) a classification of data-collection and data-use contexts in the domain of civil infrastructure engineering;(2) a comprehensive classification of data-sharing barriers and data-sharing promotion strategies in this domain;and (3) a synthesis of the opinions about the current practices, future vision, barriers, and data-sharing promotion strategies from civil infrastructure professionals and researchers using an online survey. The survey results revealed that (1) more data-sharing activities are occurring within the organizations, such as academia, government agencies, and for-profit corporations, compared with data exchanges among these communities;(2) "if there is a cost sharing in the data sharing,"is the condition that makes data providers more willing to share data with others;and (3) compared with technology improvements, the protocol of data sharing in the business domain has more potential in promoting data sharing. Meanwhile, this research identified the top five priorities among 20 data-sharing promotion strategies, which are protocol in industry and organization, data-standard regulation, data validity, data security protection, and large-scale data-sharing technology. These five priorities play critical roles in a roadmap showing how policy, business models, and technical solutions should cooperate to promote data sharing in civil infrastructure engineering. © 2023 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Assistive technology (AT) is invaluable to people with special educational needs and disabilities, enabling them to interact with computers more efficiently. It is able to improve the interactivity between humans and computers for learning purposes. However, there is a lack of accessibility and interactivity with touchscreen devices and visual content that AT users encounter. These issues are critical in providing much-needed assistance and enhancing the daily lives of disabled individuals. Therefore, we propose an AT framework based on neural networks using embedded systems for improving the accessibility and interactivity of AT users. The proposed framework utilizes the Jetson Nano and is mainly used with a speech-to-intent neural network to process speech and move cursors. When improved with cursor object detection, the framework could obtain the location of the cursors in external displays and move the cursors of other devices. Since cursor datasets are very limited and not many detection models are up for the task, we investigated the use of Slicing Aided Hyper Inference (SAHI) pipeline along with two fine-tuned models, Fully Convoluted One-Stage (FCOS) and Task-aligned One-stage Object Detection (TOOD), to identify the minimum data required for these models to work optimally. With less than 120 annotated images and a data multiplier of 5 and 30, both models were able to achieve ~ 52 and ~ 60mAP, respectively. These results were comparable to performance on other small object detection datasets. In addition, we also present a working proof-of-concept for our proposed embedded assistive technology framework. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

A hybrid neural network model, comprising of a convolutional neural network and a multilayer perceptron network, has been developed for day-ahead forecasting of regional scale wind power production. This model requires operational weather forecasts as input and also has the capability to ingest data from ensemble forecasts. Even though the training of the model requires significant computational cost, the actual forecasting can be done within a few minutes on any recent personal computer. The proposed model has demonstrated noteworthy performance at a recent international forecasting competition.

A wheelchair is a specialized form of Personal Mobility Vehicle (PMV) designed to help people with disabilities move safely to their desired locations. Unlike conventional PMVs, wheelchairs for people with disabilities are challenging to manually control in environments with heavy traffic. This study focuses on designing and feasibility testing of control systems for PMVs to meet safety and efficiency standards, even in complex environments. First, a control structure model for PMVs is proposed. This is followed by the application of a combination of First In First Out (FIFO) and Dijkstra traffic control methods to determine effective trajectories for PMVs. The proposed control system is then tested on the campus of the University of Transport and Communications. Simulation results show that when comparing the travel time of 10 PMVs, the order execution time for each PMV remains stable (within 10%) for up to 20 PMVs. However, when the number of PMVs increases to 25, 30, 35, and 40 vehicles, the order execution time increases by 35%, 55%, 103%, and 119%, respectively. These results demonstrate that the system can control a large number of PMVs, ensuring safety, flexibility, and efficiency. © 2024 Budapest University of technology and Economics. Pressure vessels are employed as storage tanks because they can store fluids at pressures that are significantly higher or lower than the surrounding ambient condition. Pressure vessels can be of any shape, however spherical and cylindrical shapes are usually employed for domestic to space applications. A common design in cylindrical pressure vessel is a cylinder with end caps frequently of hemispherical in shape. Damaged pressure vessels may fail, rupture, or at the very least leak. Poisonings, fires and explosion dangers are among the possible health and safety risks posed by leaking storage containers. Burst failures, which can be significantly more disastrous, can seriously harm both people and property. As a result, it is crucial for figuring out their operational difficulties. Thin cylindrical type 1 pressure vessel for hydrogen storage is considered in the present study. The stresses induced in thin cylinders due to internal pressure are circumferential (also known as hoop stress) and longitudinal stresses. Since, the magnitude of hoop stress is twice the value of longitudinal stress, the pressure vessel has to be designed for hoop stress. A numerical and /or mathematical model is required to analyse the pressure vessels, as experimental evaluation of induced stresses is an expensive procedure. Since Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is the most accepted numerical tool to design pressure vessels, the ANSYS R15 software has been used to evaluate the longitudinal and circumferential stresses and found good in agreement with analytical results.

Improved gradient descent-based chroma subsampling method for color images in VVC

Prior to encoding color images for RGB full-color, Bayer color filter array (CFA), and digital time delay integration (DTDI) CFA images, performing chroma subsampling on their converted chroma images is necessary and important. In this paper, we propose an effective general gradient descent-based chroma subsampling method for the above three kinds of color images, achieving substantial quality and quality-bitrate tradeoff improvement of the reconstructed color images when compared with the related methods. First, a bilinear interpolation based 2×2 t (∈ {RGB, Bayer, DTDI}) color block-distortion function is proposed at the server side, and then in real domain, we prove that our general 2×2 t color block-distortion function is a convex function. Furthermore, a general closed form is derived to determine the initially subsampled chroma pair for each 2×2 chroma block. Finally, an effective iterative method is developed to improve the initially subsampled (U, V )-pair. Based on the Kodak and IMAX datasets, the comprehensive experimental results demonstrated that on the newly released versatile video coding (VVC) platform VTM-8.0, for the above three kinds of color images, our chroma subsampling method clearly outperforms the existing chroma subsampling methods. Vibration is the periodic motion due to elastic property of body. Anything has mass and elasticity can vibrate but a rigid body cannot vibrate. Oscillation is also periodic motion as restoring force is due to weight of the body. Even rigid body can oscillate. A wide range of applications found in IC engines, Jet engines, Electro-mechanical drives, reciprocating compressors, etc. Excessive vibration causes sudden structural failure which leads to catastrophe or major accidents. Hence, it is necessary to evaluate natural frequency of vibration to avoid failure of the system due to resonance. The present study aims to determine the natural frequency of torsional oscillation experimentally in un-damped and damped condition. The materials used in the present study are Steel and Brass. For each of the material, the time required for 20 oscillations were noted with and without damper. The steel found better torsional characteristics than brass in un-damped condition as steel has better elastic properties. The effect of mass moment of inertia, length and diameter of the rod on torsional oscillations were studied. Moreover, the damping characteristics of oil was studied and found that higher the damping factor if the amplitude reduction factor is high.
