The NASA Administrator's Fellowship Program (NAFP) research grant is awarded to faculty fellows upon the completion of their one-year resident research at a NASA center. The award provided a unique research opportunity, which is rarely available for faculty and students at community college level, for the author to conduct a research project at a community college. With the support of the NAFP faculty research award, the author was able to not only continue the NASA related research on optimum machining parameters, but also get students involved in the research project. In this paper, the author presents the research project and experimental results. In addition, he shares his experiences of how to engage and supervise community college students in research as well as lessons learned from the process. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.

This modeling study investigates the functional role of pacemaker neurons in generating stable rhythms in the pre-Botzinger complex, a subcircuit of the respiratory pattern-generating circuitry in mammals. While the presence of pacemakers within the network is without doubt, the percentage and significance of such pacemakers is still unresolved. Here we revisited earlier network simulations by varying the fraction of pacemaker and non-pacemaker neurons within the network, and quantifying the robustness of the input parameter space and range of frequencies output by the network. Stable network rhythms were possible even with no pacemakers. However, we found that a network of at least 50% pacemakers produced the greatest range of output frequencies and had the more robust input space

This article describes two demonstrations at the NTT Group Communication EXPO held at the Tokyo International Forum in December 2005. These showed visitors two of our trials on the feasibility of remotely operating instruments in Chile from Japan: an optical telescope and rock hammers in an underground copper mine. These applications use a relatively high bandwidth of around 100 Mbit/s and require short delay times for smooth interactive operation. To satisfy these requirements we used NTT's experimental research network GEMnet2 in collaboration with partner R&E (research and education) networks in North and South America. The demonstrations showed that Internet-based networks can handle interactive network applications with sufficient quality between two sites separated by almost the maximum possible distance on the Earth as long as the bandwidth and the route are carefully managed.

New Fuzzy Color Median Filter

Median filters are widely used in color image processing. In this paper a new fuzzy median filter is introduced, suitable for the removal of impulse noise in color images. In order to apply a median operator, some kind of ordering of vectors is required. Thus, a vector ordering scheme in the HSV color space using fuzzy if-then rules is described and then the median value operator is defined. The weighted fuzzy median is also studied. This filter performs significantly better in impulse noise removal, compared to other reported median filters. Experimental and comparative results of the application of the proposed filter and other similar reported filters, exhibit the superiority of the proposed method when applied to degraded color images. © 2004, Springer.

The proposed scaling algorithm outperforms other standard and widely used scaling techniques. The algorithm uses a mask of maximum four pixels and calculates the final luminosity of each pixel combining two factors;the percentage of area that mask coves from each source pixel and the difference in luminosity between the source pixels. The interpolation is capable of scaling both grey-scale and color images of any resolution in any scaling factor. Its key characteristics and low complexity make the interpolation very fast and capable of real time implementation. The performance results in a variety of standard tests are presented and compared to other scaling algorithms. © 2005 IEEE.

The growing complexity of MEMS devices and their increased used in embedded systems (e.g., wireless integrated sensor networks) demands a disciplined approach for MEMS design as well as the development of techniques for system-level modeling of these devices so that a seamless integration with the existing embedded system design methodologies is possible. In this paper, we present a MEMS design methodology that uses VHDL-AMS based system-level model of a MEMS device as a starting point and combines the top-down and bottom-up design approaches for design, verification, and optimization. In this paper, an efficient architecture for multiplicative inversion in GF(2/sup m/) using addition chains is presented. The approach followed was based on the Itoh-Tsujii algorithm targeting a fast implementation on reconfigurable hardware devices. We give the design details of the proposed architecture whose main building blocks are a field multi-squarer block, a field polynomial multiplier and a BRAM two-port memory. Our design is able to compute multiplicative inversion in GF(2/sup 193/) in about 1.33/spl mu/S using only 27 clock cycles.

This article demonstrates results and experiences gained in the area of multilayer internetworking, with emphasis on bandwidth on-demand provisioning as well as resource and restoration management. Behavioral characteristics and numerical results were obtained from a management system prototype implemented and tested in an appropriately adapted commercial WDM environment enhanced with multivendor gigabit IP routers. The management solution, the testbed environment, and a representative evaluation scenario are presented as a means of explaining in detail the results that finally allow a global system assessment.

In this paper, we present a novel graph-oriented approach for architecting and modeling CORBA-based distributed applications. It provides higher-level abstractions for the architecture description of CORBA-based distributed applications. In the proposed model, the configuration of a CORBAbased distributed application is described as a logical graph separated from the programming of the constituent components of the application. It also provides more powerful support for dynamic reconfiguration and simplification of component programming. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.
