Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), unmanned underwater vehicles, are cheaper to operate than remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), since an AUV does not require a trained human operator to control. As a result, in this paper, we propose the pipeline tracking algorithm using sequences of the forward-looking sonar (FLS) images installed on a preprogram AUV. The FLS is more suitable to be used in the subsurface environment than an optical camera due to the limited visibility and floating particles in the sub-sea surface environment. In our work we first employed the speckle noise reduction to the FLS images. Then, we applied the level-set method (LSM) to extract a pipeline boundary in each frame. Lastly, the post-processing step was designed to link the unconnected segments together to from a complete pipeline. Our algorithm can perform the segmentation and tracking with more than 85% accuracy.

The 2-D Forward-looking Sonar (2D-FLS) is a new technology of sonar signals that increases the performance of underwater exploration of an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV). Because the AUV is a fully automatic robot that can handle various missions and does not require humans to control its operation, FLS is the best tool for underwater navigation in poor visibility conditions. In this paper, we used an FLS image sequence to estimate the height of the pipeline and create an elevation map containing information about the height in each of the pixels. In our algorithm, we employed the Markov random field to model the elevation map, since elevations of neighboring pixels are more likely to have similar values. Next, the Metropolis Algorithm (MA) is used to find the solution of the maximum a posterori equation.

Energy conservation of sensor nodes (SNs) is the major concern of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) as those are operated by small batteries with a limited power. In a clustered WSN, cluster heads (CHs) collects local information such as temperature, humidity, pressure etc. from the member SNs aggregate it and send to the sink through few intermediate CHs. Here, the CHs that are closer to the sink are over burdened as they are responsible for forwarding more number of packets than the farther CHs that tends to exhaust their energy quickly. This results in network partitioning and this problem well known hot spot or energy hole problem. In this paper, a Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) approach based clustering and routing algorithms are proposed to address the hot spot problem. In clustering, we select few efficient SNs as CHs from the normal SNs with respect to certain cost function. We design an algorithm for CH selection based on GSA and assign the remaining SNs to the CHs based on another derived cost function. Then, a GSA based routing algorithm is presented with respect to the routing cost function. These algorithms are intended to develop to enhance the lifetime of network with efficient encoding schemes of GSA. The proposed algorithms are simulated on various scenarios of WSNs by varying number of SNs. The results of the proposed algorithms are compared with few well known algorithms to show the supremacy in terms network lifetime, residual energy and number of alive SNs. © Springer International Publishing AG 2018.

In this paper, the user cooperative task computation is explored by sharing the computing capability of the user equipments (UEs) so as to enhance the performance of mobile edge computing (MEC) networks. The number of completed tasks is maximized while minimizing the total power consumption of the UEs by jointly optimizing the user task offloading decision, the computational speed for the offloaded task and the transmit power for task offloading. An iterative algorithm based on the linear programming relaxation is proposed to solve the formulated mixed integer non-linear problem. The simulation results show that the proposed user cooperative computation scheme can achieve a higher completed tasks ratio than the non-cooperative scheme.

Trilateration and multilateration are important location estimation techniques used in a diverse range of networks and applications. The system of equations yielded by multilateration can be reduced to simpler linear equations which can be solved to arrive at a closed form analytic solution. Exploiting this solution technique, we develop a novel and unique analytical model for the localization error resulting from trilateration. The analytical model can be used for the analysis of the localization error in all applications wherever multilateration is used for position estimation including internet of things, wireless sensor networks and global navigation satellite system thereby increasing reliability and quality of localization. As an example, we use the analytical model to corroborate the fact that localization error is a function of topology of reference positions in addition to distance estimation errors. The analytical model is verified using simulation experiments.

Graphene nanosheets were fabricated on a metal (Al) substrate by using a chemical spray method. Annealing process has been applied to reducing the concentration of carbon and to increase the sheet hardness. Surface morphology measured by metallurgical microscope Device Corporation, X 1600. Thermal camera was used to measure the performance of coated heat sink. The temperature was measured from the two sides, one from heat sink side, and the other one is from power transistor side. The results showed that the temperature of the transistor was decreased by about 4.3 °C in the case of heat sink coating with 80 μm layer thickness while decreased by 6.9 °C in the case of the heat sink coating with 120 μm layer thickness.

To meet the ever growing wireless network demands, in terms of subscribers and data throughput, operating long term evolution (LTE) in unlicensed bands, also known as license assisted access (LAA), is introduced as a promising solution. However, the LAA network must co-exist with incumbent IEEE $802.11$ systems. In this paper, we introduce MIMO operation to boost the LAA-Wi- Fi coexistence. We take the impact of imperfect sensing into account and analyze the key performance indicators (KPIs), such as throughput, and probabilities of successful transmissions and collisions. Moreover, the optimal LAA contention window size is characterized to maximize the LAA sum rate while assuring Wi-Fi throughput above a predetermined threshold. Numerical results show the efficiency of the introduced algorithm and that if the parameters are appropriately selected, the throughput of both systems increases.

Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), unmanned underwater vehicles, provide lower operation costs in underwater pipeline inspection than remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), since there is no need for a human operator. However, the navigation algorithm is an important part of the successful deployment of AUVs. In this work, we propose an algorithm that extracts the direction of a pipeline based on the level set method (LSM). This direction shall be used for the automatic navigation of an AUV. The low light and turbid water prohibit the use of an optical camera. Instead, a forward-looking sonar (FLS) was selected to provide input sequence images. Due to speckle noise, the traditional image segmentation algorithm cannot be used. Thus, the LSM is applied to represent the direction of pipelines. Lastly, the post-processing which estimates the direction is used to increase the accuracy. From experiments, our algorithm can extract the pipeline direction with accuracies of as high as 94.33%.

—Cervical cancer is one of the deadliest cancers affecting women globally. Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) assessment using histopathological examination of cervical biopsy slides is subject to interobserver variability. Automated processing of digitized histopathology slides has the potential for more accurate classification for CIN grades from normal to increasing grades of premalignancy: CIN1, CIN2 and CIN3. Cervix disease is generally understood to progress from the bottom (basement membrane) to the top of the epithelium. To model this relationship of disease severity to spatial distribution of abnormalities, we propose a network pipeline, DeepCIN, to analyze high-resolution epithelium images (manually extracted from whole-slide images) hierarchically by focusing on localized vertical regions and fusing this local information for determining Normal/CIN classification. The pipeline contains two classifier networks: 1) a cross-sectional, vertical segment-level sequence generator (two-stage encoder model) is trained using weak supervision to generate feature sequences from the vertical segments to preserve the bottom-to-top feature relationships in the epithelium image data;2) an attention-based fusion network image-level classifier predicting the final CIN grade by merging vertical segment sequences. The model produces the CIN classification results and also determines the vertical segment contributions to CIN grade prediction. Experiments show that DeepCIN achieves pathologist-level CIN classification accuracy. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.
