MI3SE: A Multi-User Index-Based Searchable Symmetric Encryption Scheme for Improving Security of Data in Connected Electronic Devices

In the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), outdoor electronic devices serve crucial roles across sectors, providing vital data for decision-making. However, their exposure to open outdoor environments makes them vulnerable to unauthorized access, physical theft, or compromise, endangering both the device and its data. Ensuring the security of outdoor devices and their data is thus critical. This study addresses data security in outdoor IIoT devices by supporting the encryption of all IIoT-related data in device memory. Accessing and retrieving this data requires operations on encrypted data. Hence, we introduce a Searchable Symmetric Encryption (SSE) scheme called MI3SE, which ensures each device's encryption key is unique and valid for a period based on the device's security sensitivity. Moreover, MI3SE meets key security requirements, including confidentiality, integrity, forward secrecy, and backward secrecy. It is specifically designed to mitigate physical compromise and query pattern analysis through a two-keyword query approach and withstand various attacks, as validated by rigorous security analysis. Comparative evaluations against benchmark schemes underscore the efficacy of MI3SE in terms of both security and performance. Moreover, comprehensive non-mathematical security analysis and simulation experiments affirm the enhanced accuracy and efficacy of MI3SE in securing sensitive data stored in outdoor IIoT devices. © 1975-2011 IEEE.

A wheelchair is a specialized form of Personal Mobility Vehicle (PMV) designed to help people with disabilities move safely to their desired locations. Unlike conventional PMVs, wheelchairs for people with disabilities are challenging to manually control in environments with heavy traffic. This study focuses on designing and feasibility testing of control systems for PMVs to meet safety and efficiency standards, even in complex environments. First, a control structure model for PMVs is proposed. This is followed by the application of a combination of First In First Out (FIFO) and Dijkstra traffic control methods to determine effective trajectories for PMVs. The proposed control system is then tested on the campus of the University of Transport and Communications. Simulation results show that when comparing the travel time of 10 PMVs, the order execution time for each PMV remains stable (within 10%) for up to 20 PMVs. However, when the number of PMVs increases to 25, 30, 35, and 40 vehicles, the order execution time increases by 35%, 55%, 103%, and 119%, respectively. These results demonstrate that the system can control a large number of PMVs, ensuring safety, flexibility, and efficiency. © 2024 Budapest University of Technology and Economics. The conventional EEG machine measures brain signal frequencies between 1 and 300 Hz on the scalp. By utilizing Fourier transform (FFT), it generates a 2D frequency profile. Our innovative EEG, known as Dodecanogram (DDG), operates in two modes. In the first mode, it detects a wide range of frequencies from 6 THz to 1 milliHz, creating a brain scan based on resonance. In the second mode, it uses picosecond pulses to capture potential surges, measuring their duration, intensity, and phase variation, revealing brain activity patterns. Both modes work simultaneously in the DDG device. To minimize environmental interference, we use interconnected DDG devices on eight human brains. The detected results from DDG show that DDG is a fundamental technology for understanding various mental states. Potential applications include neuro-disease diagnosis and exploring treatments involving electrical and electromagnetic pulses. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Time delay estimation using fixed-time terminal sliding mode control (TDEFxSMC) for unknown nonlinear systems with uncertainty and external disturbances is presented in this study. Firstly, the notion of fixed-time terminal sliding mode control (FxSMC) is outlined and thoroughly examined. Using the FxSMC scheme, nonsingular fixed-time control, non-chatter control inputs, and high performance tracking positions have been achieved. To estimate the unknown dynamics, proposed method incorporates a TDE scheme. The Lyapunov theorem is applied to find whether the proposed system can achieve its stability in a fixed-time. The effectiveness of the suggested method is evaluated and demonstrated by presenting the results of the proposed method implemented to the nonlinear robot dynamics. © 2024 IEEE.

The growing interest in developing smart diagnostic systems to help medical experts process extensive data for treating incurable diseases has been notable. In particular, the challenge of identifying thyroid cancer (TC) has seen progress with the use of machine learning (ML) and big data analysis, incorporating Transformers to evaluate TC prognosis and determine the risk of malignancy in individuals. This review article presents a summary of various studies on AI-based approaches, especially those employing Transformers, for diagnosing TC. It introduces a new categorization system for these methods based on artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, the goals of the framework, and the computing environments used. Additionally, it scrutinizes and contrasts the available TC datasets by their features. The paper highlights the importance of AI instruments in aiding the diagnosis and treatment of TC through supervised, unsupervised, or mixed approaches, with a special focus on the ongoing importance of Transformers and large language models (LLMs) in medical diagnostics and disease management. It further discusses the progress made and the continuing obstacles in this area. Lastly, it explores future directions and focuses within this research field. © 2024, CC BY.

Here we report that the source of Si impurities commonly observed on (010) β-Ga2O3 is from exposure of the surface to air. Moreover, we find that a 15 minute HF (49%) treatment reduces the Si density by approximately 1 order of magnitude on (010) β-Ga2O3 surfaces. This reduction in Si is critical for the elimination of the often observed parasitic conducting channel, which negatively affects transport properties and lateral transistor performance. After the HF treatment the sample must be immediately put under vacuum, for the Si fully returns within 10 minutes of additional air exposure. Lastly, we demonstrate that performing a 30 minute HF (49%) treatment on the substrate before growth has no deleterious effect on the structure or on the epitaxy surface after subsequent Ga2O3 growth. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

In this paper, we propose a modularized framework for communication processes applicable to crash and Byzantine fault-tolerant consensus protocols. We abstract basic communication components and show that the communication process of the classic consensus protocols such as RAFT, single-decree Paxos, PBFT, and Hotstuff, can be represented by the combination of communication components. Based on the proposed framework, we develop an approach to analyze the consensus reliability of different protocols, where link loss and node failure are measured as a probability. We propose two latency optimization methods and implement a RAFT system to verify our theoretical analysis and the effectiveness of the proposed latency optimization methods. We also discuss decreasing consensus failure rate by adjusting protocol designs. This paper provides theoretical guidance for the design of future consensus systems with a low consensus failure rate and latency under the possible communication loss. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. Li-ion batteries are fundamental components for the energy transition of the European ecosystem. Currently, Europe lags behind Asia in terms of Li-ion battery cell manufacturing, over 90% of the world’s production takes place in Far East. To overcome this situation, there is an ambitious ramp-up plan of 25 new gigafactories in Europe with an expected value of €35 bn by 2030. However, during the ramp-up phase it is expected that a significant amount of deffective batteries and scrap, estimated between 15%-30%, will be generated due to the lack of knowledge-based methods for production quality improvement in the battery sector. This paper presents the innovative features of the Zero-Defect Manufacturing approach for battery production lines proposed by the BATTwin project. The solution encompasses four interconnected layers: (i) a multi-sensor data acquisition and management layer, supported by data semantics through a Digital Battery Passport compliant data model; (ii) process-level digital twins, modeling the critical stages of electrode manufacturing, cell assembly and conditioning through multi-physics, data-driven and hybrid approaches; (iii) system-level models, based on simulation and analytical modeling; (iv) user-centric, goal-driven workflows, increasing the explainability of digital twins and driving the user in system design and control. The current progress of the proposed approach and the future validation plan to meet target KPIs are discussed for two industrial pilots producing different battery chemistries and geometries, demonstrating the flexibility and scalability of the approach towards Zero-Defect European Gigafactories.

Device discovery has a great impact on the performance of Bluetooth low energy (BLE). The performance of device discovery is highly related to the advertising mode. BLE has two advertising modes: pseudo-random delay advertising (RDA) and periodic deterministic advertising (PDA). Generally, PDA has low discovery latency but is susceptible to persistent collisions, whereas RDA does not suffer persistent collisions but has much larger discovery latency. In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid advertising mode, called Deterministic and pseudo-Random delay Advertising (DRA), which has the advantages of both PDA and RDA. We develop an analytical model for DRA mode based on a two-dimensional discrete-time Markov chain, and analyze the expected discovery latency of DRA in a single-advertiser case and a multiple-advertiser case. Simulation shows the accuracy of our analytical model, and also verifies that DRA can achieve an excellent tradeoff between low discovery latency and robustness to collisions.
