The Euler’s elastica energy regularizer, initially employed in mathematical and physical systems, has recently garnered much attention in image processing and computer vision tasks. While implicit surface reconstruction methods generally demonstrate superior robustness and ffexibility, the traditional methods rely on initialization and can easily become trapped in local minima. The Euler’s elastica term, on the other hand, has been found to share the advantages of both the TV regularization term and the curvature regularization term. In this paper, we aim to address the problems of missing details and complex computation in implicit 3D reconstruction by efffciently using the Euler’s elastica term. We propose a surface reconstruction model with the Euler’s elastica energy regularizer as well as a new dual method to simplify the model’s solution. Experimental results show that the proposed model can maintain the robustness and accuracy of existing variational surface reconstruction models while improving efffciency and model usability. © 2023, The Authors. Dielectric Flow- and Tab-Based Battery Thermal Management System for Ev High Performance Application

From the perspectives of security, durability, and proper operation, effective temperature control via thermal management systems (TMSs) on lithium-ion batteries is crucial for electric vehicle use. In this regard, a novel TMS based on dielectric flow and tab cooling was presented in this paper. A functional prototype of the system was developed and experimentally tested for performance analysis. A thermal model was built on computational fluid dynamics software, and a comparative analysis of the initial and an optimised geometry of the prototype was carried on after validation. Results demonstrate the adequate response of the system. Thermally speaking, temperature decrease was noticed during operation, and the internal and among-cells thermal gradient was preserved into the recommended span. Besides, the used dielectric fluid assisted with a low auxiliary consumption due to its particular viscosity. With the new geometry, the dielectric flow duct volume was reduced by 79.8%, and the system particularities were enhanced due to heat dissipation improvement: operating temperatures were even lower in every scenario examined. The temperature difference among cells was reduced by 15%. Thermal dispersion within the cells was still below the limit, despite being increased. Moreover, the necessary pumping energy consumption was below 0.004% of the exchanged battery module’s energy, demonstrating the TMS efficiency. Thus, the application potential of the dielectric tab cooling-based system for electric vehicles was highlighted. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Learning 6-DoF Fine-grained Grasp Detection Based on Part Affordance Grounding

Robotic grasping is a fundamental ability for a robot to interact with the environment. Current methods focus on how to obtain a stable and reliable grasping pose in object level, while little work has been studied on part (shape)-wise grasping which is related to fine-grained grasping and robotic affordance. Parts can be seen as atomic elements to compose an object, which contains rich semantic knowledge and a strong correlation with affordance. However, lacking a large part-wise 3D robotic dataset limits the development of part representation learning and downstream applications. In this paper, we propose a new large Language-guided SHape grAsPing datasEt (named LangSHAPE) to promote 3D part-level affordance and grasping ability learning. From the perspective of robotic cognition, we design a two-stage fine-grained robotic grasping framework (named LangPartGPD), including a novel 3D part language grounding model and a part-aware grasp pose detection model, in which explicit language input from human or large language models (LLMs) could guide a robot to generate part-level 6-DoF grasping pose with textual explanation. Our method combines the advantages of human-robot collaboration and LLMs’ planning ability using explicit language as a symbolic intermediate. To evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed method, we perform 3D part grounding and fine-grained grasp detection experiments on both simulation and physical robot settings, following language instructions across different degrees of textual complexity. Results show our method achieves competitive performance in 3D geometry fine-grained grounding, object affordance inference, and 3D part-aware grasping tasks. Ultra-high extinction-ratio light modulation by electrically tunable metasurface using dual epsilon-near-zero resonances

The lossy nature of indium tin oxide(ITO) at epsilon-near-zero(ENZ) wavelength is used to design an electrically tunable metasurface absorber. The metasurface unit cell is constructed of a circular resonator comprising two ITO discs and a high dielectric constant perovskite barium strontium titanate(BST) film. The ENZ wavelength in the accumulation and depletion layers of ITO discs is controlled by applying a single bias voltage. The coupling of magnetic dipole resonance with the ENZ wavelength inside the accumulation layer of ITO film causes total absorption of reflected light. The reflection amplitude can achieve ~84 d B or ~99.99% modulation depth in the operation wavelength of 820 nm at a bias voltage of-2.5 V. Moreover, the metasurface is insensitive to the polarization of the incident light due to the circular design of resonators and the symmetrical design of bias connections.

This study analyzes students' impressions of deep-sea 3D video experiences delivered through a head-mounted display. Four female students watched an undersea expedition video and answered seven structured questions, followed by an open-ended prompt. Their responses revealed that 3D imagery significantly enhanced immersion, visual appeal, and educational engagement compared to traditional 2D images. Participants consistently rated the questions highly, citing immersive qualities, sustained attention, and increased understanding as notable benefits. A co-occurrence network analysis of the open-ended responses identified "immersive," "realistic," and "engaging" as central themes, reflecting how students felt deeply involved in the depicted scenes. "Educational" and "understanding" emerged as interconnected concepts, indicating students perceived that 3D visuals improved their comprehension of complex subjects. Terms like "fun" and "enjoyable" linked closely with "3D viewing," emphasizing the technology's motivational value. Overall, this study confirms that 3D imagery offers substantial educational benefits by promoting focus, understanding, and enjoyment, suggesting potential applications in fields requiring spatial comprehension. However, due to the small sample size, results cannot be fully generalized. © 2024 The Authors.

Practicing mindfulness, focusing attention on the internal and external experiences occurring in the present moment with open and nonjudgement stance, can lead to the development of emotional regulation skills. Yet, the effective connectivity of brain regions during mindfulness has been largely unexplored. Studies have shown that mindfulness practice promotes functional connectivity in practitioners, potentially due to improved emotional regulation abilities and increased connectivity in the lateral prefrontal areas. To examine the changes in effective connectivity due to mindfulness training, we analyzed electroencephalogram (EEG) signals taken before and after mindfulness training, focusing on training-related effective connectivity changes in the frontal area. The mindfulness training group participated in an 8-week mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) program. The control group did not take part. Regardless of the specific mindfulness practice used, low-gamma band effective connectivity increased globally after the mindfulness training. High-beta band effective connectivity increased globally only during Breathing. Moreover, relatively higher outgoing effective connectivity strength was seen during Resting and Breathing and Body-scan. By analyzing the changes in outgoing and incoming connectivity edges, both F7 and F8 exhibited strong parietal connectivity during Resting and Breathing. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the changes in effective connectivity of the right lateral prefrontal area predicted mindfulness and emotional regulation abilities. These results partially support the theory that the lateral prefrontal areas have top-down modulatory control, as these areas have high outflow effective connectivity, implying that mindfulness training cultivates better emotional regulation. © 2023 Wiley Periodicals LLC.

Automatic modulation recognition for frequency-hopping (FH) signals remains very challenging to researchers due to the signals' time-varying spectral characteristics. In this work, a novel robust automatic modulation recognition scheme is investigated for FH signals using the phase-space topological features represented by the embedded phase diagrams. As such embedded phase diagrams are often high-dimensional, it is necessary to formulate the phase-space features as tensors. In the training process, the phase-space tensor features will be utilized to establish the regression models as linear encoders for the individual modulations. The aforementioned linear encoders are constructed using the support vector machine (SVM);the phase-space feature-tensors of the training signals of all modulations will be projected by their corresponding regression models (or linearly encoded) to produce the representative code-vectors, respectively. In the test stage, the phase-space feature-tensor produced from a test signal will be projected by each individual trained regression model (or linearly encoded) to generate the respective code-vectors. Then, the code-vectors resulting from the test stage will be compared with the representative code-vectors to find which modulation will lead to the smallest Euclidean distance in between and such a modulation will be picked as the modulation type of the test signal. Monte Carlo simulation results have demonstrated that the average recognition accuracy of our proposed new approach is more than 90% when the signal-to-noise ratio is no less than 0 dB for additive white Gaussian noise. © 2023 IEEE.

A Multi-population Integrated Approach for Capacitated Location Routing

The capacitated location-routing problem involves determining the depots from a set of candidate capacitated depot locations and finding the required routes from the selected depots to serve a set of customers whereas minimizing a cost function that includes the cost of opening the chosen depots, the fixed utilization cost per vehicle used, and the total cost (distance) of the routes. This paper presents a multi-population integrated framework in which a multi-depot edge assembly crossover generates promising offspring solutions from the perspective of both depot location and route edge assembly. The method includes an effective neighborhood-based local search, a feasibility-restoring procedure and a diversification-oriented mutation. Of particular interest is the multi-population scheme which organizes the population into multiple subpopulations based on depot configurations. Extensive experiments on 281 benchmark instances from the literature show that the algorithm performs remarkably well, by improving 101 best-known results (new upper bounds) and matching 84 best-known results. The increased computational loads in grid servers are dissipating more heat to eventually amplifies the cooling demand in the data center (DC). This can lead to more submitted jobs missing their job completion deadlines. Unfortunately, the conventional DC job scheduling approaches do not provide compensation to the resource users on their submitted jobs that missed the deadlines. The absence of compensation may dissuade users from submitting jobs to the DCs. While the free air-cooling strategy is used elsewhere, it is not generally applicable in tropical countries such as Malaysia. A constant artificial cooling (air conditioning) is needed to sustain the DC long-hour operation. To solve this issue in the tropical region, green incentive-scheduling algorithms were devised to significantly save the cooling electricity consumption cost in DC and to be able to compensate users (as an incentive) for their submitted jobs that missed the job completion deadline(s). However, there is a need to further analyse the performance of the proposed green incentive-scheduling algorithms using a different benchmark traces file and to conduct a cost-saving comparison analysis between the green incentive-scheduling and the non-green incentive-scheduling algorithms. Therefore, this paper's authors observed and analysed the performance comparison of the proposed green incentive-based job scheduling algorithms using a benchmark traces file and conducted a cost-saving comparison analysis between the green incentive and the non-green incentive-based scheduling algorithms. Robust control of quantum systems is an increasingly relevant field of study amidst the second quantum revolution, but there remains a gap between taming quantum physics and robust control in its modern analytical form that culminated in fundamental performance bounds. With certain exceptions such as quantum optical systems that can be modelled as linear stochastic differential equations, quantum systems are not amenable to linear, time-invariant, measurement-based robust control techniques, and thus novel gap-bridging techniques must be developed. This survey is written for control theorists to provide a review of the current state of quantum control and outline the challenges faced in trying to apply modern robust control to quantum systems. We present issues that arise when applying classical robust control theory to quantum systems, typical methods used by quantum physicists to explore such systems and their robustness, as well as a discussion of open problems to be addressed in the field. We focus on general, practical applications and recent work to enable control researchers to contribute to advancing this burgeoning field. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.
