The semiconductor industry is experiencing an accelerated transformation to overcome the scaling limits of the transistor and to adapt to new requirements in terms of data storage and computation, especially driven by artificial intelligence applications and the Internet of Things. In this process, new materials, devices, integration strategies and system architectures are being developed and optimized. Among them, memristive devices and circuits—memristors are two-terminal memory devices that can also mimic some basic bioelectronic functions—offer a potential approach to create more compact, energy-efficient or better-performing systems. The memristor industry is growing quickly, raising abundant capital investment, creating new jobs and placing advanced products in the market. Here we analyse the status and prospects of the memristor industry, focusing on memristor-based products that are already commercially available, prototypes with a high technological readiness level that might affect the market in the near future, and discuss obstacles and pathways to their implementation. © Springer Nature Limited 2025.

An Activation-Driven K-Nearest Neighbour to Enhance Imbalanced Data Classification

As traditional distance metrics used in the k-nearest neighbour (kNN) fail to capture non-linear relationships and sparse local density of the samples, thus impacting classification performance negatively, this study proposes coupling the m-arcsinh activation function with the kNN classifier to enhance classification performance. The higher generalisation yielded by the proposed m-arcsinh kNN is demonstrated on three benchmark datasets from the University California Irvine Machine Learning repository: DARWIN, Differentiated Thyroid Cancer Recurrence, and Diagnostic Breast Cancer Wisconsin. Findings demonstrate significant improvements in classification performance compared to traditional kNN methods. Specifically, the m-arcsinh kNN achieved an average accuracy of 95.33%, precision of 92.33%, recall of 95.33%, and F1-score of 93.67%, outperforming conventional distance metrics (Euclidean, cosine, and Manhattan) that averaged 88.67% accuracy, 84.67% precision, 88.67% recall, and 85.67% F1-score. These results highlight the potential of the m-arcsinh activation function as coupled with the kNN classifier in real-world applications, particularly in handling imbalanced datasets and enhancing the reliability of medical diagnostics and prognostics. © 2024, The Authors. In this work, we introduce a breast cancer detection system based on a metasurface antenna with miniaturized unitcells. The operating frequency of the system is 200 MHz, allowing for sufficient penetration into the female breast tissues, while providing impressions with good resolution. Leveraging the designed metasurface film and working in the near-field region of the transmitter antenna, we were able to detect very small abnormalities in female breast models. © 2023 IEEE.

Polymers contain functional groups that participate in hydrogen bond (H-bond) with water molecules, establishing a robust H-bond network that influences bulk properties. This study utilized molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to examine the H-bonding dynamics of water molecules confined within three poly(meth)acrylates: poly(2-methoxyethyl acrylate) (PMEA), poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA), and poly(1-methoxymethyl acrylate) (PMC1A). Results showed that H-bonding dynamics significantly slowed as the water content decreased. Additionally, the diffusion of water molecules and its correlation with H-bond breakage were analyzed. Our findings suggest that when the H-bonds between water molecules and the methoxy oxygen of PMEA are disrupted, those water molecules persist in close proximity and do not diffuse on a picosecond timescale. In contrast, the water molecules H-bonded with the hydroxy oxygen of PHEMA and the methoxy oxygen of PMC1A diffuse concomitantly with the breakage of H-bonds. The minmax multiple traveling salesman problem involves minimizing the longest tour among a set of tours. The problem is of great practical interest because it can be used to formulate several real-life applications. To solve this computationally challenging problem, we propose a leaning-driven iterated local search approach that combines an aggressive local search procedure with a probabilistic acceptance criterion to find high-quality local optimal solutions and a multi-armed bandit algorithm to select various removal and insertion operators to escape local optimal traps. Extensive experiments on 77 commonly used benchmark instances show that our algorithm achieves excellent results in terms of solution quality and running time. In particular, it achieves 32 new best-known results and matches the best-known results for 35 other instances. In this paper, we investigate a cell-free massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO)-enabled integration communication, computation, and sensing (ICCS) system, aiming to minimize the maximum computation latency to guarantee the stringent sensing requirements. We consider a two-tier offloading framework, where each multi-antenna terminal can optionally offload its local tasks to either multiple mobile-edge servers for distributed computation or the cloud server for centralized computation while satisfying the sensing requirements and power constraint. The above offloading problem is formulated as a mixed-integer programming and non-convex problem, which can be decomposed into three sub-problems, namely, distributed offloading decision, beamforming design, and execution scheduling mechanism. First, the continuous relaxation and penalty-based techniques are applied to tackle the distributed offloading strategy. Then, the weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE) and successive convex approximation (SCA)-based lower bound are utilized to design the integrated communication and sensing (ISAC) beamforming. Finally, the other resources can be judiciously scheduled to minimize the maximum latency. A rigorous convergence analysis and numerical results substantiate the effectiveness of our method. Furthermore, simulation results demonstrate that multi-point cooperation in cell-free massive MIMO-enabled ICCS significantly reduces overall computation latency, in comparison to the benchmark schemes. © 2025, CC0.

Ice conditions often require ships to reduce speed and deviate from their main course to avoid damage to the ship. In addition, broken ice fields are becoming the dominant ice conditions encountered in the Arctic, where the effects of collisions with ice are highly dependent on where contact occurs and on the particular features of the ice floes. In this paper, we present AUTO-IceNav, a framework for the autonomous navigation of ships operating in ice floe fields. Trajectories are computed in a receding-horizon manner, where we frequently replan given updated ice field data. During a planning step, we assume a nominal speed that is safe with respect to the current ice conditions, and compute a reference path. We formulate a novel cost function that minimizes the kinetic energy loss of the ship from ship-ice collisions and incorporate this cost as part of our lattice-based path planner. The solution computed by the lattice planning stage is then used as an initial guess in our proposed optimization-based improvement step, producing a locally optimal path.
