Joint Task Offloading, DNN Pruning, and Computing Resource Allocation for Fault Detection With Dynamic Constraints in Industrial IoT

In this paper, we investigate a joint task offloading, deep neural network (DNN) model pruning, and edge computing resource allocation (JOPA) problem for supporting a fault detection service on industrial washing machines in layered industrial Internet-of-Things (IIoT) systems. Specifically, we aim to maximize the overall network resource utilization while guaranteeing diverse and time-varying task processing delays and accuracy requirements for generated processing/computing tasks for the fault detection service. To capture the network dynamics, we formulate a stochastic optimization problem to maximize the long-term network resource utilization with per-time-slot constraints on the end-to-end (E2E) task latency and accuracy. Considering the network state transitions and the relations between network states and policies, we transform our problem to a Markov reward process (MRP) formulation where the state transitions are characterized independent of the actions taken. To deal with the large problem size and dynamic quality-of-service (QoS) constraints (e.g., E2E delay and accuracy constraints), we design a deep-reinforcement-learning (DRL) solution framework based on a refined soft actor-critic (SAC) algorithm, where the main SAC algorithmic components (i.e., actor networks, critic networks, and target networks) are customized to accommodate hybrid actions (mixed discrete and continuous actions), achieve a robust evaluation of state-action policies, and stabilize the training process. Extensive simulation results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme and the advantages over benchmark approaches in terms of 1) achieving high network resource utilization, 2) balancing the trade-off between resource utilization and QoS satisfaction, and 3) adapting to the network load variation and dynamic QoS requirements. © 2015 IEEE.

This article presents a performance comparison of the solid, low impedance, high impedance, frequency-selective, and isolated grounding systems. A grounding system (for any power system component) is designed as an impedance (ZG) that connects the neutral point to the ground. The impedance ZG is constructed using a combination of R, L, and C elements. The values and combination type (series or parallel) of R, L, and C determine the possible influence of ZG on ground currents and potentials. Each grounding system is related to a system voltages level, a specific combination of R, L, and C, and a range of R, L, and C values. The solid, low impedance, high impedance, frequency-selective, and isolated grounding systems are designed for a 3φ transformer and a 3φ synchronous generator in order to compare their influences on ground currents and potentials during ground faults. The transformer and generator are tested for line-to-ground and double line-to-ground faults with all designed grounding systems. Test results show that some grounding systems can reduce ground currents only, while others can reduce ground potentials only. Such capabilities can be used to fulfill certain system and operation requirements (e.g., service continuity, ground capacity, etc.). © 1972-2012 IEEE.

An introduction of intelligent interconnectivity for people and things has posed higher demands and more challenges for sixth-generation (6G) networks, such as high spectral efficiency and energy efficiency, ultra-low latency, and ultrahigh reliability. Cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), also called intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), are two promising technologies for coping with these unprecedented demands. Given their distinct capabilities, integrating the two technologies to further enhance wireless network performances has received great research and development attention. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey of research on RIS-aided CF mMIMO wireless communication systems. We first introduce system models focusing on system architecture and application scenarios, channel models, and communication protocols. Subsequently, we summarize the relevant studies on system operation and resource allocation, providing in-depth analyses and discussions. Following this, we present practical challenges faced by RIS-aided CF mMIMO systems, particularly those introduced by RIS, such as hardware impairments and electromagnetic interference. We summarize corresponding analyses and solutions to further facilitate the implementation of RIS-aided CF mMIMO systems. Furthermore, we explore an interplay between RIS-aided CF mMIMO and other emerging 6G technologies, such as next-generation multiple-access (NGMA), simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT), and millimeter wave (mmWave). In this paper, we focus on distributed learning over peer-to-peer networks. In particular, we address the challenge of expensive communications (which arise when e.g. training neural networks), by proposing a novel local training algorithm, LTADMM. We extend the distributed ADMM enabling the agents to perform multiple local gradient steps per communication round (local training). We present a preliminary convergence analysis of the algorithm under a graph regularity assumption, and show how the use of local training does not compromise the accuracy of the learned model. We compare the algorithm with the state of the art for a classification task, and in different set-ups. The results are very promising showing a great performance of LT-ADMM, and paving the way for future important theoretical developments.

Partially grouted reinforced masonry shear walls (PG-RMSWs) have emerged as an efficient and economic seismic force-resisting system in North America. Unlike fully grouted reinforced masonry shear walls (FG-RMSWs), where all masonry cells are grouted, in the PG-RMSWs system, grout is only placed in cells with vertical reinforcement and horizontally reinforced bond beams. This paper proposes two simplified models using Extreme Loading of Structures (ELS) and VecTor2 software to predict the cyclic behaviour of PG-RMSWs constructed with concrete-masonry blocks and having reinforced bond beams. The proposed models are validated against experimentally tested walls available in the literature and are found to be capable of simulating the experimental behaviour. This can be beneficial in structural health monitoring of systems having PG-RMSWs as their seismic force-resisting system (SFRS) by giving good predictions of their response. © 2022 International Conference on Structural Health Monitoring of Intelligent Infrastructure: Transferring Research into Practice, SHMII. End-to-end self-supervised models have been proposed for estimating the success of future candidate grasps and video predictive models for generating future observations. However, none have yet studied these two strategies side-by-side for addressing the aforementioned grasping problem. We investigate and compare a model-free approach, to estimate the success of a candidate grasp, against a model-based alternative that exploits a self-supervised learnt predictive model that generates a future observation of the gripper about to grasp an object. Our experiments demonstrate that despite the end-to-end model-free model obtaining a best accuracy of 72%, the proposed model-based pipeline yields a significantly higher accuracy of 82%. https://***/future-grasp © 2023, CC BY.

This work confirms the performance gain achieved by deploying a simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) in covert communication. To maximize the system covert rate, we jointly optimize the power allocation coefficients at the transmitter and the transmission and reflection coefficients at the STAR-RIS, subject to the delay-constrained and power-constrained. Furthermore, we propose a two-stage alternating optimization algorithm based on the semidefinite relaxation (SDR) method to derive the optimal solutions to the above non-convex optimization problem. The effectiveness and superiority of the proposed algorithm and STAR-RIS-assisted covert scheme are demonstrated by the numerical results. © 2023 IEEE.

The metric dimension of a graph measures how uniquely vertices may be identified using a set of landmark vertices. This concept is frequently used in the study of network architecture, location-based problems and communication. Given a graph G, the metric dimension, denoted as dim(G), is the minimum size of a resolving set, a subset of vertices such that for every pair of vertices in G, there exists a vertex in the resolving set whose shortest path distance to the two vertices is different. This subset of vertices helps to uniquely determine the location of other vertices in the graph. A basis is a resolving set with a least cardinality. Finding a basis is a problem with practical applications in network design, where it is important to efficiently locate and identify nodes based on a limited set of reference points. Laughter serves as a subtle social signal in human interaction, playing an essential role in expressing emotions and facilitating social connections. However, laughter comes in various forms and is usually accompanied by different non-verbal expressions, such as facial expressions and gestures. These accompanying factors can significantly influence the effect of laughter in diverse contexts, thus complicating the research on laughter, especially in understanding its role in social dynamics. Consequently, endowing robots with the ability to appropriately use laughter in interactions with humans is still a big challenge. Our current study focuses on the effect of robot laughter on robot humor expression. Our objective is to investigate whether and how two factors, the type of laughter and the robot laughter gesture, impact the overall humor performance. In this study, we selected four types of laughter (sarcastic, joyful, embarrassed, and relieved laughter) from a laughter corpus based on four specific types of jokes (Affiliative, Aggressive, Self-enhancing, and Self-defeating). For each type of laughter, we designed distinct robot gestures. During the humor performance, the robot NAO delivered jokes accompanied by matching or mismatching laughter, with or without corresponding gestures. To enhance the quantity and diversity of experimental data, we conducted an online survey utilizing recordings of the robot’s humor performance. The experimental findings indicate that when the robot’s laughter matches the type of humor in the joke, participants rate the humor performance significantly higher compared to situations where there is a mismatch. Additionally, the results confirm the positive impact of robot laughter gestures on humor performance.

Distributed Conditional Gradient Online Learning for IoT Optimization

Many problems in Internet of Things (IoT) can be cast as distributed optimization problems. For this reason, this paper considers a distributed online constrained optimization problem in IoT, where the local objective functions change with time. In order to solve this problem, distributed projected gradient descent methods are employed frequently. However, the computation of the projection operators is prohibitive in high-dimensional constrained optimization problem. To address the issue, we propose a distributed online learning algorithm based on the conditional gradient method over IoT systems, which avoids the costly projection steps. Moreover, when the local objective functions are strongly convex, we show that the regret bound of O(T) is achieved, where T is a time horizon. When the local objective functions are potentially non-convex, we also show that the algorithm converges to some stationary points at rate of O(T). In addition, we present simulation experiments to confirm the theoretical results. IEEE
