Nowadays, multimedia data are often produced by various sources, e.g., Internet of Things (IoT), social media, customer databases, etc. As tremendous multimedia data are produced every day, users or E-commerce customers cannot infer information from such data by themselves and therefore recommender systems have been developed to help users to select the products or services which better fit users' preferences or requirements. Nonetheless, there exists few works on the incorporation of side information or multiple attributes about items into the design of a more robust recommender system. In this work, we propose a novel approach based on the third-order tensor singular-value-decomposition (T3-SVD) to design new personalized multimedia recommender systems (PMRSs) for internet users. A PMRS can dynamically adjust its recommendation strategy subject to a particular user's on-line transaction behavior. To evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed PMRS based on T3-SVD, we compare the performances of our proposed new PMRS and two other existing tensor-based recommendation systems over realworld data in terms of normalized root-mean-square error (NRMSE). As a result, our proposed new PMRS greatly outperforms the other two existing systems. © 2023 IEEE.

Aphids are one of the main threats to crops, rural families, and global food security. Chemical pest control is a necessary component of crop production for maximizing yields, however, it is unnecessary to apply the chemical approaches to the entire fields in consideration of the environmental pollution and the cost. Thus, accurately localizing the aphid and estimating the infestation level is crucial to the precise local application of pesticides. Aphid detection is very challenging as each individual aphid is really small and all aphids are crowded together as clusters. In this paper, we propose to estimate the infection level by detecting aphid clusters. We have taken millions of images in the sorghum fields, manually selected 5,447 images that contain aphids, and annotated each aphid cluster in the image. To use these images for machine learning models, we crop the images into patches and created a labeled dataset with over 151,000 image patches. Then, we implement and compare the performance of four state-of-the-art object detection models. © 2023, CC0.

Anomaly detection in current distribution of wire bonded connection of the Silicon Carbide power MOSFET module is proposed and examined as a comprehensive condition monitoring precursor for monitoring package-related failure modes. The simulation and experimental results show that both wire bond-related and solder layer-related degradation can be detected using the proposed technique. To capture the current distribution profile, magnetic field of the wire bonds is measured using the tunnel magneto-resistance sensors in the sensing subsection of the proposed condition monitoring technique. © IET Conference Proceedings. Gradient-based iterative algorithms have been widely used to solve optimization problems, including resource sharing and network management. When system parameters change, it requires a new solution independent of the previous parameter settings from the iterative methods. Therefore, we propose a learning approach that can quickly produce optimal solutions over a range of system parameters for constrained optimization problems. Two Coupled Long Short-Term Memory networks (CLSTMs) are proposed to find the optimal solution. The advantages of this framework include: (1) near-optimal solution for a given problem instance can be obtained in few iterations during the inference, (2) enhanced robustness as the CLSTMs can be trained using system parameters with distributions different from those used during inference to generate solutions. In this work, we analyze the relationship between minimizing the loss functions and solving the original constrained optimization problem for certain parameter settings. Extensive numerical experiments using datasets from Alibaba reveal that the solutions to a set of nonconvex optimization problems obtained by the CLSTMs reach within 90% or better of the corresponding optimum after 11 iterations, where the number of iterations and CPU time consumption are reduced by 81% and 33%, respectively, when compared with the gradient descent with momentum. © 2015 IEEE.

The design and analysis of controllers to regulate excitation transport in quantum spin rings presents challenges in the application of classical feedback control techniques to synthesize effective control, and generates results in contradiction to the expectations of classical control theory. This paper examines the robustness of controllers designed to optimize the fidelity of an excitation transfer to uncertainty in system and control parameters. We use the logarithmic sensitivity of the fidelity error as the robustness measure, drawing on the classical control analog of the sensitivity of the tracking error. Our analysis shows that quantum systems optimized for coherent transport demonstrate significantly different correlation between error and the log-sensitivity depending on whether the controller is optimized for readout at an exact time T or over a time-window T ± ∆/2. Robustness of Energy Landscape Control to Dephasing

As shown in previous work, in some cases closed quantum systems exhibit a non-conventional absence of trade-off between performance and robustness in the sense that controllers with the highest fidelity can also provide the best robustness to parameter uncertainty. As the dephasing induced by the interaction of the system with the environment guides the evolution to a more classically mixed state, it is worth investigating what effect the introduction of dephasing has on the relationship between performance and robustness. In this paper we analyze the robustness of the fidelity error, as measured by the logarithmic sensitivity function, to dephasing processes. We show that introduction of dephasing as a perturbation to the nominal unitary dynamics requires a modification of the log-sensitivity formulation used to measure robustness about an uncertain parameter with non-zero nominal value used in previous work. We consider controllers optimized for a number of target objectives ranging from fidelity under coherent evolution to fidelity under dephasing dynamics to determine the extent to which optimizing for a specific regime has desirable effects in terms of robustness. Our analysis is based on two independent computations of the log-sensitivity: a statistical Monte Carlo approach and an analytic calculation. We show that despite the different log-sensitivity calculations employed in this study, both demonstrate that the log-sensitivity of the fidelity error to dephasing results in a conventional trade-off between performance and robustness. In Artificial Intelligence, there is an increasing demand for adaptive models capable of dealing with a diverse spectrum of learning tasks, surpassing the limitations of systems devised to cope with a single task. The recent emergence of General-Purpose Artificial Intelligence Systems (GPAIS) poses model configuration and adaptability challenges at far greater complexity scales than the optimal design of traditional Machine Learning models. Evolutionary Computation (EC) has been a useful tool for both the design and optimization of Machine Learning models, endowing them with the capability to configure and/or adapt themselves to the task under consideration. Therefore, their application to GPAIS is a natural choice. This paper aims to analyze the role of EC in the field of GPAIS, exploring the use of EC for their design or enrichment. We also match GPAIS properties to Machine Learning areas in which EC has had a notable contribution, highlighting recent milestones of EC for GPAIS. Furthermore, we discuss the challenges of harnessing the benefits of EC for GPAIS, presenting different strategies to both design and improve GPAIS with EC, covering tangential areas, identifying research niches, and outlining potential research directions for EC and GPAIS. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

Aphid infestation poses a significant threat to crop production, rural communities, and global food security. While chemical pest control is crucial for maximizing yields, applying chemicals across entire fields is both environmentally unsustainable and costly. Hence, precise localization and management of aphids are essential for targeted pesticide application. The paper primarily focuses on using deep learning models for detecting aphid clusters. We propose a novel approach for estimating infection levels by detecting aphid clusters. To facilitate this research, we have captured a large-scale dataset from sorghum fields, manually selected 5,447 images containing aphids, and annotated each individual aphid cluster within these images. To facilitate the use of machine learning models, we further process the images by cropping them into patches, resulting in a labeled dataset comprising 151,380 image patches. Then, we implemented and compared the performance of four state-of-the-art object detection models (VFNet, GFLV2, PAA, and ATSS) on the aphid dataset. Extensive experimental results show that all models yield stable similar performance in terms of average precision and recall. We then propose to merge close neighboring clusters and remove tiny clusters caused by cropping, and the performance is further boosted by around 17%. The study demonstrates the feasibility of automatically detecting and managing insects using machine learning models. Modeling and Simulation of a Single Catalytic Fixed Bed in an Ammonia Reactor

We present a dynamical model of a single catalytic fixed bed in a quench-type ammonia reactor. This model consists of thermodynamics, kinetics, pressure loss, and mass and energy balances, which upon spatial discretisation results in a set of differential-algebraic equations. Compared to similar models in the literature, the main novelties in the model are: 1) a rigorous thermodynamic model using a thermodynamic software library; and 2) a correlation between the gas velocity and the pressure gradient throughout the bed, i.e. the pressure loss is included in the model and used to compute the gas velocity. We investigate steady state solutions and dynamical simulations to understand the behaviour of the single catalytic fixed bed. We determine the optimal steady state operational area and inverse response dynamics are observed. The model can be used to develop model-based control, which is relevant for dynamic and flexible operation of ammonia reactors in a Power-to-Ammonia plant.
