Objectives/Scope: This study outlines the development and use of a modified dummy gas lift valve designed to obtain subsurface microbiological samples from a defined dept. series across a production well. An overview of the initial field pilot is presented wherein microbiological data from the modified valve will be contrasted with topside samples to evaluate the information yielded from sampling downhole biofilm communities in place of planktonic populations from the well head. Methods, Procedures, Process: In this approach, the modified dummy gas lift valve, preloaded topside with carbonate plugs and coupons, is deployed at various dept.s in the well's completion for downhole incubation. This modification allows production fluids to wet the payloads, enabling in situ biofilm colonization by reservoir communities across dept. and temperature gradients. Post retrieval using a slickline tool, sample DNA is extracted for metagenomic sequencing, assessing microbial composition and metabolic capabilities (including souring and MIC-related activities). Concurrent production fluid samples from the wellhead will be analyzed for comparison to evaluate any information gained from biofilm over planktonic population sampling. Results, Observations, Conclusions: Samples from the modified valve are expected to provide sufficient yields of DNA, uncontaminated by non-resident microbes from outside of the producer. Microbial data from downhole biofilms is anticipated to provide a more diverse community makeup than production fluid communities sampled at the wellhead, with a corresponding increase in problematic species associated with MIC and souring. Corrosion coupon analyses will enable conclusions regarding proactive decision-making enablement and extrapolations of 3D projections of microbiological communities between modified valves across the completion column will provide the relationship between in situ conditions, microbial colonization in the context of pore space and risk

This research work integrates advanced data preparation methods and advanced modelling approaches to offer a complete approach for creating a predictive model for heart disease. Data cleansing starts the procedure in order to fix disparities and manage missing values, thereby guaranteeing the dependability and accuracy of the dataset. By producing synthetic samples for the minority class, the Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE) solves class imbalances and improves the accuracy of the model to forecast minority class occurrences. The z-score approach helps to control outliers thereby preventing distortion in the study. Using a hybrid Filter-Recursive Feature Elimination (FRFE) approach-which combines filter and wrapper techniques to find the most pertinent features, therefore lowering multicollinearity and boosting model performance-feature selection is accomplished. Important characteristics found are age, kind of chest discomfort, maximal heart rate attained, ST depression brought on by exercise, and fluoroscopy-induced coloration of several major arteries. Using AdaBoost, an ensemble learning technique combining several weak classifiers to create a strong one, the improved dataset is utilised to develop a predictive model. The resultant model shows great accuracy (93%), precision (93%), recall (94%), and an amazing ROC AUC score (0.98), therefore highlighting its potential use in healthcare environments and heart disease prediction ability. © 2024 IEEE.

Texture classification plays a crucial role in applications ranging from object recognition and product design to surface exploration. Utilizing deep learning methods with sensors, such as accelerometers, offers a way to identify key surface features without the need to precisely replicate human touch. A Contextually Guided Convolutional Neural Network (CG-CNN) employs contextual guidance by developing auxiliary tasks during its training. These tasks offer implicit, yet rigorous, internal supervision signals. When trained with these subtasks, CG-CNN learns to represent the innate structure and patterns within the data, resulting in robust, transferrable, and local/contextual-neighborhood-preserving domain representations. This paper extends the CG-CNN framework for texture classification by integrating semisupervised learning. Empirical evaluations on the VibTac-12 texture dataset reveal that CG-CNN effectively generalizes to novel and unfamiliar textures, even when trained with scarce labeled examples. By harnessing vast amounts of unlabeled, contextually relevant data alongside the labeled samples, CG-CNN ensures robust and precise texture classification. Such advancements hold promise for applications in robotics, prosthetics, and haptic interfaces.

The Matter standard, formerly known as Connected Home over IP, has emerged as the preferred choice for most smart home IoT vendors and service providers for the next-generation smart home IoT systems. It enhances interoperability across different smart home ecosystems and introduces the multi-admin feature, allowing a device to be commissioned and managed by multiple platforms simultaneously. While this standard offers considerable convenience, it also presents challenges for security policy enforcement. Policy enforcement has been highlighted in various studies as a crucial countermeasure against smart home IoT system vulnerabilities. Existing smart home policy enforcement methods, designed for individual IoT admin platforms, operate under the assumption of having a global view and control over all IoT devices in a smart home. This assumption, however, is untenable in a multi-admin environment, where an admin may only have partial device access or a partial view. In this work, we thoroughly analyze these challenges in a multi-admin setting and propose the first cross-admin policy enforcement solution. Our solution can parse complex policies into deployable sub-policies for each admin, and create virtual device instances and virtual automation rules to interconnect various admins. We test our solution on a real-world testbed involving 12 IoT devices and three popular Matter-enabled IoT platforms. Our results show that our solution can enforce cross-admin policies with a 100% success rate and a very small delay.

In this work, we demonstrate the impact of an unconventional convolutional photonic accelerator, based on an optical spectrum slicing (OSS) [1], on the classification accuracy of objects, generated through a high-frame rate neuromorphic event-based camera [2]. The experimental setup is depicted in Fig. 1a. It consists of a 5 mW-632 nm-LED source, two objective lenses with NA=0.65 that concentrate the light beam into a $100\ \mu \mathrm{m}\times 100\ \mu \mathrm{m}$ channel. In our experiments, the targeted objects consist of test spheres, of different diameters (12, 16, and $20 \mu{m}$ ), used in aqua solutions. A pump regulated the sphere's speed to 0.8 m/s. The objects were recorded by a 10 kframe/s capable neuromorphic camera, with a temporal resolution of $1\ \mu \mathrm{s}$ . The camera detects pixel's contrast changes (events), similar to biological systems [2]. The recorded events were exported into 1 kframes/sec videos through a synthetic frame generator software, resulting to 2988 images per particle [2]. Images were post-processed using only noise reduction by frame subtraction and image cropping so as to reduce data volume to $100\times 100$ pixels.

We consider the problem of harvesting data from a set of targets distributed throughout a two dimensional environment. The targets broadcast their data to an agent flying above them, and the goal is for the agent to extract all the data and move to a desired final position in minimum time. While previous work developed optimal controllers for the one-dimensional version of the problem, such methods do not extend to the 2-D setting. Therefore, we first convert the problem into a Markov Decision Process in discrete time and then apply reinforcement learning to find high performing solutions using double deep Q learning. We use a simple binary cost function that directly captures the desired goal, and we overcome the challenge of the sparse nature of these rewards by incorporating hindsight experience replay. To improve learning efficiency, we also utilize prioritized sampling of the replay buffer. We demonstrate our approach through several simulations, which show a similar performance as an existing optimal controller in the 1-D setting, and explore the effect of both the replay buffer and the prioritized sampling in the 2-D setting.

Mecanum wheeled mobile robots have increasingly caught researchers' attention due to their wide range of applications and higher maneuverability. However, their complex structure makes their trajectory tracking and control problem more challenging. This paper presents a cascaded controller for trajectory tracking of a four-wheel Mecanum mobile robot. The cascaded controller consists of a linear time-varying model predictive controller (LTV-MPC) and an inner PID controller. The proposed controller does not require the system's dynamics model. To this end, the linear time-varying error model used to design the MPC is obtained from the robot's kinematics model. The angular velocities obtained from the predictive controller are then mapped into the required commands for the DC motors using a PID controller. The PID controller is fine-tuned considering the motor's dead zone using the Genetic Algorithm. Simulations and experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the cascaded controller over the regular LTV-MPC. The proposed algorithm can also be used for other real-time implementations of robotic tasks.

Exploration and self-observation are key mechanisms of infant sensorimotor development. These processes are further guided by parental scaffolding to accelerate skill and knowledge acquisition. In developmental robotics, this approach has been adopted often by having a human acting as the source of scaffolding. In this study, we investigate whether Large Language Models (LLMs) can act as a scaffolding agent for a robotic system that aims to learn to predict the effects of its actions. To this end, an object manipulation setup is considered where one object can be picked and placed on top of or in the vicinity of another object. The adopted LLM is asked to guide the action selection process through algorithmically generated state descriptions and action selection alternatives in natural language. The simulation experiments that include cubes in this setup show that LLM-guided (GPT3.5-guided) learning yields significantly faster discovery of novel structures compared to random exploration. However, we observed that GPT3.5 fails to effectively guide the robot in generating structures with different affordances such as cubes and spheres. Overall, we conclude that even without fine-tuning, LLMs may serve as a moderate scaffolding agent for improving robot learning, however, they still lack affordance understanding which limits the applicability of the current LLMs in robotic scaffolding tasks.

This study examines to what extent the testing of traditional software components and machine learning (ML) models fundamentally differs or not. While some researchers argue that ML software requires new concepts and perspectives for testing, our analysis highlights that, at a fundamental level, the specification and testing of a software component are not dependent on the development process used or on implementation details. Although the software engineering/computer science (SE/CS) and Data Science/ML (DS/ML) communities have developed different expectations, unique perspectives, and varying testing methods, they share clear commonalities that can be leveraged. We argue that both areas can learn from each other, and a non-dual perspective could provide novel insights not only for testing ML but also for testing traditional software. Therefore, we call upon researchers from both communities to collaborate more closely and develop testing methods and tools that can address both traditional and ML software components. While acknowledging their differences has merits, we believe there is great potential in working on unified methods and tools that can address both types of software.

This paper deals with the design of an Android mobile application and visualization of the measured values of particulate matter and meteorological factors from the measurement stations. The application can in principle be effectively used in any field of data visualization. The architecture of the mobile application, the security, the use of AWS services to access the data in the InfluxDB databases, as well as the user interface and graphical visualizations of the measured data are described and illustrated. The application is user tested and the paper documents their first experiences using the mobile application.
