The paper considers ways to improve the quality of information support for airspace control systems and air traffic control with the help of wide-area multi-position monitoring systems. A comparative analysis has shown that the accuracy of estimating air object coordinates by the wide area multilateration system under consideration is significantly higher than that provided by currently available wide area multilateration systems. It is shown that the introduction of active and passive methods for creating wide-area multi-position observation systems significantly broadens the number of available air object coordinate estimation techniques and, as a result, enhances the quality of information support by providing its users with the opportunity of choosing an optimal estimation method for various primary measurements of received signal parameters. Active wide area multilateration systems significantly expand the number of methods available for solving the problem of adequate information support to airspace control system users;use of secondary surveillance radar aircraft responders allows estimating air object coordinates by both single-position and multi-position method. © 2020 IEEE.

Automotive simulation can potentially compensate for a lack of training data in computer vision applications. However, there has been little to no image quality evaluation of automotive simulation and the impact of optical degradations on simulation is little explored. In this work, we investigate Virtual KITTI and the impact of applying variations of Gaussian blur on image sharpness. Furthermore, we consider object detection, a common computer vision application on three different state-of-the-art models, thus allowing us to characterize the relationship between object detection and sharpness. It was found that while image sharpness (MTF50) degrades from an average of 0.245cy/px to approximately 0.119cy/px;object detection performance stays largely robust within 0.58%(Faster RCNN), 1.45%(YOLOF) and 1.93%(DETR) across all respective held-out test sets. © This is an open access article published by the IET under the Creative Commons Attribution License (http://***/licenses/by/3.0/)

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) regulations require construction workers to wear safety helmets to ensure site safety. However, monitoring PPE compliance consistently in fast-paced, dynamic construction environments poses a significant challenge. In response, we developed a sophisticated object detection system that automates the real-time verification of helmet use, thereby improving safety standards and reducing the likelihood of accidents. Extensive research was conducted to analyze all feasible algorithms that can be implemented in the safety helmet detection system and compare the proposed model with an existing one to ensure the proposed system can give high accuracy and high inference speed. Therefore, YOLOv5 was identified as the ideal choice in terms of accuracy and speed, and it was then enhanced with optimized transfer learning. We began our methodology by pre-training a comprehensive Kaggle dataset before refining the model using Roboflow on a specialized dataset. Using PyTorch and YOLOv5, we conducted exhaustive model training, testing, and evaluation. Our system achieved a lightning-fast inference speed of 39.8 milliseconds and a remarkable 91.4 percent accuracy in identifying helmet compliance. The implementation of such object detection technologies has the potential to significantly increase safety helmet compliance, thereby creating a safer environment for construction workers. © 2023 IEEE.

The outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has had a profound impact on education worldwide. The rise of remote learning is one of the most significant changes in this regard, as many schools and universities were forced to close down by regional health authorities. This has also caused people to become more conservative in trade-offs between healthcare and education. Google Trends is the most common tool for analyzing online search behaviors. It is a free resource that provides information on the trends and changes in users' online interests over time based on certain terms and subjects. The online search queries on Google can be used to assess users' behaviors concerning online learning to forecast their choices regarding online education. This paper examines the frequency of users' web searches for online communication tools, courses, and learning terms. We statistically compared users in the Middle East and North Africa regions by using the volumes of searches recorded on Google Trends from January 2016 to August 2022. Moreover, we used machine learning techniques to identify differences among the keywords used. The findings statistically show that COVID-19 has led to an increase in the extent of students' attention to and interest in online learning.

Considering potential threats to cyber-physical systems such as component faults and stealthy cyber-attacks, an adaptive observer-based threat discrimination method is proposed for identifying the occurring threat type. Typically, stealthy attacks have only weak effects easily obscured by disturbances on the system outputs. To solve this problem, a parameter adaptation algorithm based on a newly designed dynamic adaptive gain generator is proposed, aiming at improving the sensitivity of the adaptive threat discrimination scheme to potential threats. Only the strictly positive real condition of the proposed gain generator sufficiently ensures the stability of the adaptive observer error system. A moment-matching method is then developed to determine the proper parameters of the gain generator, allowing for the improvement of the sensitivity of the threat discriminators. A numerical example to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology is presented.

In the edge computing network environment, our applications can be deployed on edge servers. The request to execute the application can be produced on the edge device and transmitted to the edge server for calculation. A complex request may be divided into multiple computing tasks and transmitted to different servers and then parallel calculated before obtaining the final result. How to schedule computing tasks in multiple requests so that all requests can be completed faster is a difficult problem, especially in the edge computing environment where we should consider the communicating work and the calculating work simultaneously. In this paper, we first build a task dependency model of the computing tasks included in the request based on the idea of dividing the method components of the application. The dependencies include sequence, selection and parallel. Then we propose an online scheduling algorithm MCOS based on optimizing the task with the maximum amount of calculation to solve the problem of the minimum sum of the completion time of all requests. In simulations, we show the algorithm MCOS has a better completion time. © 2022 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Intelligent systems for the medical domain often require processing data streams that evolve over time and are only partially labeled. At the same time, the need for explanations is of utmost importance not only due to various regulations, but also to increase trust among systems' users. In this work, an online data-driven learning method with focus on the explainability of evolving models equipped with incremental semi-supervised learning algorithms is considered. The proposed method combines: (i) the Dynamic Incremental Semi-Supervised Fuzzy C-Means (DISSFCM) algorithm to incrementally classify subsets of data;with (ii) Linguistic Summarization, which provides explanations of the classification results in terms of short sentences in a natural language. The approach has been illustrated for streaming data collected from voice calls of patients affected by Bipolar Disorder. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed method in classifying instances belonging to healthy and affective states, and explaining the approximate reasoning behind the classification of new acoustic data related to patients. © 2022 IEEE.

The growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm has brought the attention from intensive domains, with the objective of automating their critical processes in what is known as the next-generation IoT. Nonetheless, nextgeneration IoT applications will be critical, and thus, will have very high Quality of Service (QoS) requirements, like very short response times. To achieve these short response times, the research community proposes using the Cloud Continuum, as well as Software-Defined Networking (SDN). Moreover, IoT applications are often based on microservices architectures due to their distributed nature, enabling them to fully obtain the benefits of the Cloud Continuum. Therefore, placing the next-generation IoT application’s microservices and the SDN controllers in a manner that minimizes the response times is key. However, using the Cloud Continuum and SDN with the sole objective of minimizing response times will incur in a higher energy consumption and, by proxy, an even larger carbon footprint due to the implementation of next-generation IoT. In this paper, we present Q-NGINE, a framework that enables an energy-efficient microservice and SDN controller placement through the Cloud Continuum, trading off the energy consumption of the next-generation IoT application and its response time. An evaluation over an Internet of Medical Things use case shows that Q-NGINE can reduce the energy consumption up to 24.19% with an increase of only 1.5% in response times.

The Software-Defined Networking (SDN) paradigm enables network administrators to manage the behavior of the network thanks to a centralized control plane. By programming network-level applications, it is possible to determine how traffic flows must be handled programmatically. In the same manner that computing applications have evolved from monolithic to microservice-based architectures, network-level applications are expected to evolve into microservice-based SDN controllers, implementing each application as a replicable and individually deployable component of the SDN controller. In such a scenario, the Quality of Service (QoS) experienced by traffic flows depends on how these microservices are placed and deployed through the network topology. In this work, we provide a system to optimize the QoS of the traffic in microservice-based SDN networks by optimally placing and replicating the network-level microservices. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed solution over a real network topology with varying traffic loads.

Due to the frequency of eye illnesses, effective and precise diagnostic instruments are required. This work suggests an approach that uses low quality fundus images with deep transfer learning more precisely, the EfficientNetB0 architecture to improve eye health diagnosis. We tackle the problem caused by the quality of fundus photographs that are commonly found in clinical settings, which frequently display noise and abnormalities. Our methodology consists of pretraining the EfficientNetB0 model on a sizable dataset of excellent fundus photos, followed by fine-tuning it on a dataset of poor fundus photos. By employing this transfer learning technique, the model enhances its diagnostic capabilities by learning to identify significant features from the low-quality images. We ran tests on a variety of datasets that included fundus photos of varying degrees of deterioration in order to assess our approach. As compared to conventional techniques, the results reveal a significant improvement in diagnostic accuracy, demonstrating the effectiveness of deep transfer learning for improving eye health diagnosis from difficult fundus images. With fused features from MobileNet and DenseNet-121 models, the ANN specifically achieved accuracies of 98.5% for cataracts, 99.1% for diabetic retinopathy, 99% for glaucoma, and 99.5% for normal conditions.
