We demonstrate that direct data-driven control of nonlinear systems can be successfully accomplished via a behavioral approach that builds on a Linear Parameter-Varying (LPV) system concept. An LPV data-driven representation is used as a surrogate LPV form of the data-driven representation of the original nonlinear system. The LPV data-driven control design that builds on this representation form uses only measurement data from the nonlinear system and a priori information on a scheduling map that can lead to an LPV embedding of the nonlinear system behavior. Efficiency of the proposed approach is demonstrated experimentally on a nonlinear unbalanced disc system showing for the first time in the literature that behavioral data-driven methods are capable to stabilize arbitrary forced equilibria of a real-world nonlinear system by the use of only 7 data points. © 2022, CC BY-NC-SA.

After identifying an artifact as malware, the additional challenge arises of correctly classifying it into a specific family. This raises the challenge of classifying malware amid growing complexity and the increasing volume of cyber threats. Therefore, we introduce FORTUNATE, a framework that employs variable-length instruction sequences to classify malware more efficiently and accurately, focusing on real and active malware. By introducing effective methods for extracting opcodes and their representation in the smallest possible vectors, FORTUNATE surpasses the limitations of previous approaches, enabling the correct identification of malware in their respective families, while avoiding redundancies in the data. The results achieved with FORTUNATE demonstrate advances in both precision and computational efficiency, consolidating it as a significant contribution to the field of cybersecurity.

As a previous step before the rollout of a pilot Broadband Power Line Communications (BB-PLC) network, this paper describes the measurement campaign carried out for the characterization of the Low Voltage (LV) electrical grid as a transmission medium in terms of grid access impedance, attenuation, and Non-Intentional Emissions (NIEs). First, the main reasons why BB-PLC is the technology selected for the development of new Smart Grid (SG) applications over the LV distribution grid are discussed. Second, the pilot network to be rolled out is described. Then, the measurement systems designed for the assessment of the grid impedance, attenuation, and NIEs are presented, as well as a brief description of the selected locations that correspond to nine scenarios of the LV distribution grid in a town in the north of Spain. These locations represent several grid topologies and areas of different population densities. Finally, some results obtained in the field trials are shown, which demonstrate the importance of a prior characterization of the LV grid as a transmission medium for an efficient planning of a BB-PLC deployment. These results are only a representative selection of the data obtained in the measurement campaign and, thus, further analysis is required to draw accurate conclusions.

In an era of heightened digital interconnectedness, businesses increasingly rely on third-party vendors to enhance their operational capabilities. However, this growing dependency introduces significant security risks, making it crucial to develop a robust framework to mitigate potential vulnerabilities. This paper proposes a comprehensive secure framework for managing third-party vendor risk, integrating blockchain technology to ensure transparency, traceability, and immutability in vendor assessments and interactions. By leveraging blockchain, the framework enhances the integrity of vendor security audits, ensuring that vendor assessments remain up-to-date and tamper-proof. This proposed framework leverages smart contracts to reduce human error while ensuring real-time monitoring of compliance and security controls. By evaluating critical security controls—such as data encryption, access control mechanisms, multi-factor authentication, and zero-trust architecture—this approach strengthens an organization’s defense against emerging cyber threats. Additionally, continuous monitoring enabled by blockchain ensures the immutability and transparency of vendor compliance processes. In this paper, a case study on iHealth’s transition to AWS Cloud demonstrates the practical implementation of the framework, showing a significant reduction in vulnerabilities and marked improvement in incident response times. Through the adoption of this blockchain-enabled approach, organizations can mitigate vendor risks, streamline compliance, and enhance their overall security posture. Our findings highlight the importance of employing blockchain to enforce security controls and maintain compliance with healthcare regulations such as HIPAA. In this paper, we present a comprehensive set of security controls and demonstrate how blockchain technology enhances their effectiveness, ensuring greater transparency, accountability, and automation in vendor assessments. We propose and analyze a nonlinear dynamic model of continuous-time multi-dimensional belief formation over signed social networks. Our model accounts for the effects of a structured belief system, self-appraisal, internal biases, and various sources of cognitive dissonance posited by recent theories in social psychology. We prove that agents become opinionated as a consequence of a bifurcation. We analyze how the balance of social network effects in the model controls the nature of the bifurcation and, therefore, the belief-forming limit-set solutions. Our analysis provides constructive conditions on how multi-stable network belief equilibria and belief oscillations emerging at a belief-forming bifurcation depend on the communication network graph and belief system network graph. Our model and analysis provide new theoretical insights on the dynamics of social systems and a new principled framework for designing decentralized decision-making on engineered networks in the presence of structured relationships among alternatives. © 2023, CC BY-SA.

The foundation of a country's critical infrastructures (CI), which provide crucial services, is its security, healthcare, and economic systems. By lowering CI's operational costs and associated expenses and enhancing its effectiveness and safety, appropriately functional CI infrastructure plays an essential role in the prosperity of the nations. To do so, businesses that manage CIs frequently combine the Internet of Things (IoT) with Cyber-Physical systems (CPS), such as SCADA systems. SCADA systems were not initially built with web security in mind, exposing CIs open to security risks. National security issues can arise when these technologies are connected to power plants and water treatment facilities. This study aims to demonstrate how security features can be implemented in DNP3-based SCADA infrastructures. By creating a functional configuration and consensus amongst the communicating devices, the DNP3 protocol will support digital signatures. The team proposed a SCADA architecture to accomplish this, making it possible for these systems more secure manner.

This study proposed an interlinked coupled split square ring resonator (SSRR) based metamaterial (MTM) unit cell. The double-negative (DNG) metamaterial characteristics are exhibited in C, X, and Ku microwave frequency bands. The proposed MTM unit cell contains six split square ring resonators (SSRR) where a horizontal metal bar is interlinked between the fourth and fifth SSRR and a vertical metal bar interlinks between the third and fifth SSRR. The perfect electric conductor (PEC) and Rogers-RT 5880 are used in the resonator and dielectric layer to design the MTM unit cell. The unit cell has a dimension of 10×10×1.57 mm3, and the thickness of the resonator layer and dielectric layer is 0.04 mm, 1.57 mm, respectively. The computer Simulation Technology (CST Microwave Studio 2019) software is used to extract effective parameters then the finite element method (FEM) is used to verify the unit cell's performance. Due to symmetrical structure, negative permittivity, negative permeability, and negative refractive are achieved. As a result, the proposed unit cell can improve microwave devices' performance for C, X, and Ku bands, particularly satellite and radar communications. © 2021 IEEE.

Modeling trajectories in cigarette smoking prevalence, initiation and quitting for populations and subgroups of populations is important for policy planning and evaluation. This paper proposes an agent-based model (ABM) design for simulating the smoking behaviors of a population using the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation - Behavior (COM-B) model. Capability, Opportunity and Motivation are modeled as latent composite attributes which are composed of observable factors associated with smoking behaviors. Three forms of the COM-B model are proposed to explain the transitions between smoking behaviors: initiating regular smoking uptake, making a quit attempt and quitting successfully. The ABM design follows object-oriented principles and extends an existing generic software architecture for mechanism-based modeling. The potential of the model to assess the impact of smoking policies is illustrated and discussed.

We propose a one-step Local Feature Extraction Network framework to solve the sparse feature matching problem. In our network, we use raw camera data and the Structure from Motion (SfM) algorithm to restore the corresponding relationships of the different feature map. Our network combines the detector and descriptor as one step to build an end-to-end Local Feature Extraction network. At the same time, the whole process is differentiable and we train our network by the loss of feature map. Finally, we train our network on indoor datasets and prove its accuracy and rapidity advantage over other methods. © 2020 IEEE.

There are processes whose dynamic behavior is defined at different frequencies, their models being difficult to deal with as a whole. The modeling and the control design procedures can be simplified if the process is split in different components characterizing its behavior in a given range of frequencies. This idea was successfully applied in the iterative identification and control design strategy and it was reported in some previous papers. In this paper, assuming the full model of the plant, the control is designed dealing with partial process models being appropriate to represent the plant behavior in the frequency range where this control is intended to act. This brings some advantages: first, the control design is simplified as it only takes care of a range of frequencies. Moreover, in order to save resources, the control can be implemented in a multirate scheme. Several examples of processes with flexible components are considered to design their control. © 2021 IEEE.
