This paper proposes a coarse-grained dynamically reconfigurable architecture, which offers flexible reliability to soft errors and aging. A notion of cluster is introduced as a basic element of the proposed architecture, each of which can select four operation modes with different levels of spatial redundancy and area-efficiency. Evaluation of permanent error rates demonstrates that four different reliability levels can be achieved by the proposed architecture. We also evaluate aging effect due to NBTI, and illustrate that alternating active cells with resting ones periodically will greatly mitigate the aging process with negligible power overhead. The area of additional circuits to attain immunity to soft errors and reliability configuration is 26.6% of the proposed reconfigurable device. Finally, a fault-tolerance evaluation of Viterbi decoder mapped on the proposed architecture suggests that there is a considerable trade-off between reliability and area overhead.

Automatic font-written Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is highly desirable for numerous modern information technology (IT) applications. Reliable font-written OCR's for Latin scripts are readily in use since long. For cursively scripted languages, that are the mother tongues of over one fourth of the world population, such OCR's are however not available at a robust and reliable performance. In this regard, the main challenge is the mandatory connectivity of characters/ligatures (i.e. graphemes) that has to be resolved simultaneously upon the recognition of these graphemes. Among the various approaches tried over decades, Hidden Markov Models (HMM)-based OCR's seem to be the most promising as they capitalize on the ability of HMM decoders to achieve segmentation and recognition simultaneously similar to the widely used HMM-based automatic speech recognition (ASR). Unlike ASR's, what is missing in HMM-based OCR's is the definition of a rigorously founded features vector capable to robustly achieving minimal "font type/size-independent" (omnifont) word error rates comparable to those realized with Latin scripts. Here comes the contribution of this paper that introduces such a sound features vector design, and experimentally shows its superiority in this regard.

This paper evaluates theoretically the capacity of single-input-multiple-output (SIMO) system utilizing uniform linear arrays at the receiver terminal for satellite applications. The theoretical study is performed at three different frequency bands. Overall, very sufficient capacities are achieved, varying between 3 and 8 b/s/Hz. Higher capacity values are achieved for low and medium elevation angles. In the heavy shadowing scenario the capacity drops significantly comparable with the light shadowing case. It reduces, in average, 1.4-1.7 b/s/Hz. Finally, the channel capacity is uncorrelated with element separation after a specific value of λ.

Zinc oxide is a wide band-gap (3.37eV) semiconductor with high exciton binding energy (60meV) and excellent piezoelectric properties, showing promise for UV lasers, optical detection, sensors, and solar cells. Epitaxial growth of ZnO on Si is challenging due to lattice mismatch and thermal expansion coefficient differences, but it is important to develop such film growth in order to enhance the functionality of Si and provide optoelectronic and gas sensing capabilities in CMOS based ICs. Furthermore, ZnO grown by most techniques is nominally ntype and p-type films are hard to achieve; hampering the development of p-n junction devices.

This paper describes a novel speech coding concept created by introducing sparsity constraints in a linear prediction scheme both on the residual and on the prediction vector. The residual is efficiently encoded using well known multi-pulse excitation procedures due to its sparsity. A robust statistical method for the joint estimation of the short-term and long-term predictors is also provided by exploiting the sparse characteristics of the predictor. Thus, the main purpose of this work is showing that better statistical modeling in the context of speech analysis creates an output that offers better coding properties. The proposed estimation method leads to a convex optimization problem, which can be solved efficiently using interior-point methods. Its simplicity makes it an attractive alternative to common speech coders based on minimum variance linear prediction.
