A unified, semi-empirical model of etch dept. for a Bosch-type, inductively coupled plasma (ICP), silicon deep reactive ion etch (DRIE) process is reported. Aspect ratio dependent etch modulation (ARDEM) is modeled using Coburn and Winters' approach with Dushman's approximation of the vacuum conductance correction factor. The use of microdonut test structures to extract model parameters is described. The model is accurate to within 9% for an open-field dept. of 150 μm on microdonut test structures. An application of ARDEM in the processing of CMOS-MEMS devices is presented. ©2009 IEEE.

In this paper, an experimental evaluation is presented for a Model Predictive control (MPC) algorithm controlling powertrains dynamics in vehicles with Automated Manual Transmissions (AMTs). This model based control enables online optimization by using sub-optimal solutions directly linked to the accelerator pedal position. Transmission stability constraints are explicitly handled as well as saturations on the control inputs. This MPC control is tested on line during vehicle start-up in a mild hybrid city car demonstrator equipped with a natural gas engine. A comparison with a PI-based control is made to show the convenience of the proposed MPC control.

The combined use of 3D laser range finders (LRF) and cameras is increasingly common in the navigation application for autonomous mobile robots. The integration of laser range information and images requires the estimation of the Euclidean 3-dimensional transformation between the coordinate systems of the LRF and the cameras. This paper describes a new and efficient method to perform the extrinsic calibration between a 3D LRF and a stereo camera with the aid of inertial data. The main novelty of the proposed approach compared to other state of the art calibration procedures is the use of an inertial measurement unit (IMU), which decreases the number of points needed to a robust calibration. Furthermore, a freely moving bright spot is the only calibration object. A set of virtual 3D points is made by waving the bright spot through the working volume in three different planes. Its projections onto the images are found with sub-pixel precision and verified by a robust RANSAC analysis. These same points are extracted according to the laser scan data and are corresponded to the virtual 3D points in the stereo pair. Experimental results presented in this paper demonstrate the accuracy of our approach. Furthermore, the applicability of the proposed technique is high, only requiring of an inertial sensor coupled to the sensor platform. This approach has been also extended for a camera network.

Dynamic loop scheduling (DLS) algorithms provide application-level load balancing of loop iterates, with the goal of maximizing application performance on the underlying system. These methods use run-time information regarding the performance of the application's execution (for which irregularities change over time). Many DLS methods are based on probabilistic analyses, and therefore account for unpredictable variations of application and system related parameters. Scheduling scientific and engineering applications in large-scale distributed systems (possibly shared with other users) makes the problem of DLS even more challenging. Moreover, the chances of failure, such as processor or link failure, are high in such large-scale systems. In this paper, we employ the hierarchical approach for three DLS methods, and propose metrics for quantifying their robustness with respect to variations of two parameters (load and processor failures), for scheduling irregular applications in large-scale heterogeneous distributed systems.

This paper presents a method for achieving optimization in clouds by using performance models in the development, deployment and operations of the applications running in the cloud. We show the architecture of the cloud, the services offered by the cloud to support optimization and the methodology used by developers to enable runtime optimization of the clouds. An optimization algorithm is presented which accommodates different goals, different scopes and timescales of optimization actions, and different control algorithms. The optimization here maximizes profits in the cloud constrained by QoS and SLAs across a large variety of workloads.

Wavelet neural networks (WNN) have recently attracted great interest, because of their advantages over radial basis function networks (RBFN) as they are universal approximations. The integration of wavelet theory into soft computing, and combining the class of feedforward neural networks with results from the wavelet theory, new networks structure is proposed, called wavelet networks to approximate any non-linear function. In this paper, we propose a procedure that proves the ability of these networks to improve the performance of Vector control scheme of Induction Motor. A Two Activation Function Wavelet Network (TAFWN) is adopted as an alternative controller to achieve relatively more robustness than conventional feedforward neural networks (NNs). Finally, a simulation is carried out in order to validate the proposed model and demonstrate its efficiency with complex functions and high non-linearity. Simulation experimental results are reported, in fact, the obtained results prove that the objectives required by the authors were attempt with great success. Copyright © 2009 SoftMotor Ltd.

Navigation in smart environments using mediated reality tools

Topographical Disorientation (TD) is the lack or loss of orientation and navigation abilities. People living with TD face functional challenges in everyday situations. Smart mediated reality environments present potential solutions for cognitive conditions like TD. In this article, we introduce a novel mediated reality location aware environment. It was hypothesized that tools which offer different positional information affect the navigation performance of a user. The objective of this study was to investigate preferred assistive tools for indoor navigation for use in a proposed mediated reality wayfinding system. These tools may eventually be used to assist patients with TD. To this purpose, we designed a novel wayfinding metric that can be used in the assessment of navigation tasks similar to a scavenger hunt. This novel metric is based on a relative energy expenditure ratio and is independent of navigation route complexity. We investigated four sets of tools (minimap, locator, coordinate display and routing compass) that can be used in a smart mediated reality environment to provide relevant wayfinding information. These tools were designed using different combinations of spatial knowledge (landmark, route or survey), graphical presentation (compass, text, icon, top/side view) and reference frames (egocentric or allocentric). Each tool was evaluated objectively and subjectively. The locator and minimap tools emerged as preferred interfaces, providing the most relevant wayfinding information while minimizing energy expenditure during navigation tasks. © 2009 IOS Press and the authors. This paper addresses the design of controllers, subject to sparsity constraints, for linear and time-invariant plants. Prior results have shown that a class of stabilizing controllers, satisfying a given sparsity constraint, admits a convex representation of the Youla-type, provided that the sparsity constraints imposed on the controller satisfy a certain condition (named quadratic invariance) with respect to the plant and that the plant is strongly stabilizable. Another important aspect of the aforementioned results is that the sparsity constraints on the controller can be recast as convex constraints on the Youla parameter, which makes this approach suitable for optimization using norm-based costs. In this paper, we extend these previous results to the general case of possibly non-strongly stabilizable plants. Our extension is conveyed in terms of a parametrization for the class of controllers that is very similar to the Youla parametrization. In our extension, under quadratically invariant constraints, the controller class also admits a representation where the free parameter is subject to only convex constraints. While the strong stabilizability assumption has been removed our result yields the same elegant simplicity from the strongly stabilizable case.

The capability to dynamically retrieve detailed multimedia which may come from knowledge bases as well as sensor information in response to specific user queries offers the potential to create decision support systems of unprecedented utility. Such systems can learn from user feedback;by minimizing the system training required of the knowledge engineer, we can more effectively process vast free-text databases of knowledge for minimal development cost. Furthermore, these bases may be concurrently created and maintained and search algorithms can run on parallel processors connected in heterogeneous distributed networks. This paper presents an approach to web searching using knowledge amplification by structured expert randomization platform. Creativity, training, and decision support via just-in-time knowledge are fused in a system that provides the intelligence analyst with critical information where and when it is needed and in a user-friendly format. In this paper, national security examples are selected;extension to a plethora of other domains for decision support and training is inevitable.
