Power consumption will be one of the most crucial issues to realize both future VLSI chips and communication environments. This research project proposed in this paper is aiming at developing a data-driven networking system by which the coming networking environment can be achieved with ultra- low-power consumption 1/100 to 1/1000 of the present. To realize the objectives, this project is planning to proceed from two approaches by ultimately utilizing passive data-driven principle. One approach is from the processor platform, that is, data-driven chip multi-processor platform based on self-timed elastic pipeline. And the other is from the networking scheme, that is, ad hoc networking scheme. As for the platform approach, based on rich experience so far on data-driven processor, we propose a novel architecture including chip multi-processor core with highly effective self-timed elastic pipeline. As for the networking scheme, this paper shows our proposal can reduce the number of control packets that results in reduction of power consumption.

DEVS-FIRE is a model for discrete event simulation of wildfire spread, where fire spread is modeled as a contagion process in a cellular space of forest cells. In this paper, DEVS-FIRE is validated using FARSITE, a widely used fire spread model. Both graphical and statistical approaches are used and the results show that the output of DEVS-FIRE is comparable to that of FARSITE under a wide range of input conditions.

We propose a local positioning system that tracks human's movement. The system uses two 3-axis accelerometers mounted at the human's feet to detect steps. An electronic compass is used to obtain an absolute heading. Both step and heading data are combined to plot a movement trajectory on a building floor map based on the dead reckoning method. The system is tested by tracking a closed-loop walking trajectory: starting from a room, walking to another room about 20 meters away, and walk back to the starting point in the first room. The result shows about 2 meters accumulated error from the starting point.

The SCIDDICA model is a custom cellular automata used to simulate and analyse landslides and debris flows. It models landslides by tracking the amounts of kinetic energy and debris in the slide and using a set of simple rules to determine the movement of the kinetic energy and debris from cell to cell. CD++ is a toolkit for implementing DEVS and Cell-DEVS models. We present an attempt to implement SCIDDICA using DEVS and CD++. A DEVS based definition of the SCIDDICA model introduces the advantages of the DEVS formalism to the model, and would allow formal verification of the DEVS definition of the model. This also permits us to integrate a SCIDDICA based landslide with other DEVS models, allowing larger and more complex simulations to be developed.

This paper proposes a robust algorithm for detecting interest points based on the NonsubSampled Contourlet Transform (NSCT). The NSCT provides multiscale decomposition with directional filters at each scale. Furthermore, NSCT is very efficient in extracting the geometric information of images and therefore it has very good feature localization. The NSCT-based point detector is compared to the widely used Harris and Difference of Gaussian (DoG) interest point detectors. The experimental results reveal the robustness of the proposed algorithm to rotation, scale and viewpoint changes.
