In this work, we demonstrate the impact of an unconventional convolutional photonic accelerator, based on an optical spectrum slicing (OSS) [1], on the classification accuracy of objects, generated through a high-frame rate neuromorphic event-based camera [2]. The experimental setup is depicted in Fig.1a. Ιt consists of a 5 mW-632 nm-LED source, two objective lenses with NA=0.65 that concentrate the light beam into a 100 μmX100 μm channel. In our experiments, the targeted objects consist of test spheres, of different diameters (12, 16, and 20 μm), used in aqua solutions. A pump regulated the sphere's speed to 0.8 m/s. The objects were recorded by a 10 kframe/s capable neuromorphic camera, with a temporal resolution of 1 μs. The camera detects pixel's contrast changes (events), similar to biological systems [2]. The recorded events were exported into 1 kframes/sec videos through a synthetic frame generator software, resulting to 2988 images per particle [2]. Images were post-processed using only noise reduction by frame subtraction and image cropping so as to reduce data volume to 100 x 100 pixels. © 2023 IEEE.

As robotics and technology become increasingly integrated into education and daily life, it is important to recognize their essential role. Even young children have access to electronic toys and gadgets, which can facilitate their learning and interaction. This study highlights the significance of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education at the elementary school level, emphasizing how university students from a variety of disciplines can design and construct robots capable of carrying out challenging tasks for humanitarian purposes. The study also emphasizes the need to encourage women's participation in robotics to showcase their skills and innovative ideas. Furthermore, the study demonstrates how robotics can effectively be used in both STEM education and competitive challenges, showcasing its effectiveness in teaching and promoting technological advancement. By encouraging early engagement in STEM education and promoting diversity in the field of robotics, we can empower future generations to lead the way in creating innovative solutions to global challenges.

Nowadays, more people and entities express opinions on online platforms. With this increasing trend of online opinion mass information, it is impossible to analyze them manually. For this reason, an automatic approach to opinion and sentiment analysis is essential and useful in the real world. Several approaches based on machine learning techniques in sentiment analysis have been proposed. However, machine learning essentially needs massive data to generate a robust model. On the other hand, collecting the training data is costly, especially in low-resource language. To solve this problem, we introduce stepwise learning. Stepwise learning is a technique that improves the model capacity for a target task (i.e., main task) by exploiting auxiliary information from source tasks. It is effective when the data in the target tasks are inadequate. The target task of this paper is sentiment analysis for reviews in the Bangla language. Our proposed method consists of two stages: source and target tasks. For the source task, we train a transformers-based model, such as BanglaBERT, by a large dataset translated into the Bangla language; the original dataset is written in English. For the target task, we retrain and evaluate the model with a relatively small target dataset. We further investigate the effect of opinion expression style of writers between source and target data in stepwise learning. We call it “nativeness.” The experimental result shows that nativeness has an important role in improving performance.

Precise localization is essential for the operation of Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) in urban scenarios. Camera and LiDAR-based solutions are currently used in some of the CAVs around the world, but they entail an expensive performance in terms of computational time and economic cost. Due to this, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) based solutions remains the preferred solution for positioning Automated Vehicles in different Operational Design Domains (ODDs). Although several improvements in system reliability have been made recently, in case of positioning failures most of the architectures rely on system redundancy or automation disengagements to achieve minimal risk conditions. This paper presents a fail-safe decision architecture for mitigating positioning failures of automated vehicles in urban scenarios. The proposed architecture utilizes a combination of sensor fusion localization and decision-making modules to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the vehicle in the event of a positioning failure. The proposed approach is evaluated through simulation in a representative urban scenario and is shown to effectively handle positioning failures, improving the localization accuracy provided by each information source. © 2023 IEEE.

Learning Flow Functions from Data with Applications to Nonlinear Oscillators

We describe a recurrent neural network (RNN) based architecture to learn the flow function of a causal, time-invariant and continuous-time control system from trajectory data. By restricting the class of control inputs to piecewise constant functions, we show that learning the flow function is equivalent to learning the input-to-state map of a discrete-time dynamical system. This motivates the use of an RNN together with encoder and decoder networks which map the state of the system to the hidden state of the RNN and back. We show that the proposed architecture is able to approximate the flow function by exploiting the system's causality and time-invariance. The output of the learned flow function model can be queried at any time instant. We experimentally validate the proposed method using models of the Van der Pol and FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillators. In both cases, the results demonstrate that the architecture is able to closely reproduce the trajectories of these two systems. For the Van der Pol oscillator, we further show that the trained model generalises to the system's response with a prolonged prediction time horizon as well as control inputs outside the training distribution. For the FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillator, we show that the model accurately captures the input-dependent phenomena of excitability.

This paper presents a distributed setting of model predictive control (MPC) to manage linear multi-agent systems consisting of coupled subsystems. Specifically, local controllers can work in coalitions to improve performance and handle plug-and-play events. This study provides insight into a coalitional MPC strategy based on optimized tubes that handles plug-in and plug-out subsystems. Moreover, we explore an inherent robustness gap to absorb disturbances not covered by the tubes without having to group local controllers. A comparison of our approach with centralized and decentralized MPC is reported using an illustrative example.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a revolutionary technology disrupting the process of finding solutions for various sustainability challenges. Specifically, AI is having a significant influence on many sectors, especially agriculture, energy, waste management, and biodiversity conservation. This paper offers a comprehensive overview of AI's applications in sustainable resource management, with a special focus on green agriculture as a case study, in which the application of AI greatly enhances the efficiency of resource use, crop yield, and environmental conservation efforts. This overview describes the potential application of AI to address performance concerns (ethical value, energy use, and data quality deficiency), and proposes the future research directions such as the explainable AI, circular economies, and the integration of AI with the Internet of Things (IoT) to guide researchers and policymakers in exploiting AI to enhance sustainability in key domains.

To assist Java programming learning of novice students, we have developed the web-based Java Programming Learning Assistant System (JPLAS). It provides various exercise problems to cultivate code reading and code writing skills to support studies at various levels. The code writing problem (CWP) asks a student to write a source code to pass the given test code where the correctness is verified by running them on JUnit. Previously, we implemented the answer platform for students to solve CWP assignments with the automatic runs. However, the teacher needs to manually run them one by one to verify a lot of source codes from students. In this paper, we implement the answer code validation program that automatically verifies all the source codes for one test code and reports the number of tests that each code passed with the CSV file. For evaluations, we applied the program to a total of 999 source codes from 12-43 students for a total of 45 test codes that were assigned in the Java programming course in Okayama university, including for final examinations. The application results confirm the validity and effectiveness of the proposal. © 2023 IEEE.

The dynamic deployment of aerial vehicles in urban delivery scenarios demands precise route planning, reliable data links, and efficient use of network infrastructure. Although prior efforts have explored various aspects of unmanned navigation or communication optimization, existing approaches often overlook the combined impact of three-dimensional path selection and robust connectivity maintenance. To address this gap, this paper proposes a deep reinforcement learning framework employing Independent Proximal Policy Optimization (IPPO) to steer the flight paths of unmanned vehicles while curtailing needless interactions with base stations (BSs). By incorporating communication-specific metrics, Reference Signal Received Power (RSRP), the proposed system adapts to urban conditions and upholds resilient network links. Comprehensive performance evaluations reveal the potential of the framework to reduce excessive BS connections by up to 82.24%, preserve RSRP levels above -80 dBm, and balance handover frequencies across flight trajectories. These findings affirm the scalability and effectiveness of the method for achieving efficient aerial navigation and consistent communication in urban delivery services.

Projection-based integrators are effectively employed in high-precision systems with growing industrial success. By utilizing a projection operator, the resulting projection-based integrator keeps its input-output pair within a designated sector set, leading to unique freedom in control design that can be directly translated into performance benefits. This paper aims to enhance projection-based integrators by incorporating well-crafted linear filters directly into its structure, resulting in a new class of projected integrators that includes the earlier ones, such as the hybrid-integrator gain systems (HIGS), as special cases. The extra design freedom in the form of two filters in the input paths to the projection operator and the internal dynamics allows the controller to break away from the inherent limitations of a linear control design. The enhanced performance properties of the proposed structure are formally demonstrated through i) a describing function analysis, ii) mitigation of the gain-loss problem (occurring in, e.g., HIGS), and iii) numerical case studies showcasing improved time-domain properties. The describing function analysis is supported by rigorously showing incremental properties of the new filtered projection-based integrators, thereby guaranteeing the steady-state responses to be unique and asymptotically stable.
