LPV Modeling of the Atmospheric Flight Dynamics of a Generic Parafoil Return Vehicle

Obtaining models that can be used for flight control is of outmost importance to ensure reliable guidance and navigation of spacecrafts, like a Generic Parafoil Return Vehicle (GPRV). In this paper, we convert an existing, high-fidelity nonlinear model of the atmospheric flight dynamics of a GPRV to a Linear Parameter-Varying (LPV) form that enables high-performance navigation control design. Application of existing systematic conversion methods for such complicated nonlinear models often result in complex LPV representations, which are not suitable for controller synthesis. We apply and compare state-of-the-art conversion techniques on the GPRV model, including learning based approaches, to optimize the complexity and conservatism of the resulting LPV embedding. The results show that we can obtain an LPV embedding that approximates the complex nonlinear dynamics sufficiently well, where the balance between complexity, conservatism and model performance is efficiently chosen.

Cancer is a widespread global health problem, claiming millions of lives each year, and skin cancer represents a significant threat as it is one of the most common types. Early tumor detection via medical imaging is critical for effective treatment. Leveraging artificial intelligence, particularly novel models like Transformers, presents promising avenues for improved diagnosis. This paper explores the efficacy of a Collective Intelligence approach using AI in classifying cancerous and non-cancerous tumors, aiming to reduce classification errors and support clinical decision-making. We created five different configurations using various datasets to compare the results. The results show solid performance for the CI in the evaluated tasks, reaching up to 75.89% accuracy. The lack of images in certain classes significantly contributes to overfitting. It is suggested to explore data expansion strategies and improve consistency in image capture for future work.

Constant changes have marked the industry, and cyber-physical systems have offered great potential in Industry 4.0 on production processes, allowing the integration of computational intelligence and real-time processing. In this context, this paper proposes a modular hardware system for industrial applications according to a plug & play concept. The proposed system comprises a processing module (mPP) and specific expansion modules (mEXs). The mPP is responsible for administrating the network/communication. It collects data from the mEXs, extracts features, processes the features through artificial intelligence, and interacts with the production process. The mEXs comprise sensors, conditioning circuits, and an analog/digital converter. They are responsible for acquiring field signals and their transmission to the mPP. The proposed system is designed for operating with electrical protection, allowing reliable operation of the mPP and mEXs. For evaluating and demonstrating the proposed system in a real scenario, we applied it in a case study for non-intrusive energy load disaggregation. © 2023 IEEE.

Device identification is a crucial aspect of securing networks, particularly in the context of the Internet of Things (IoT), where a vast variety of devices are interconnected. Recently, there has been significant research on developing techniques for identifying IoT devices based on their unique characteristics, called as device fingerprints. These techniques use machine learning algorithms, which can effectively learn and classify devices based on their features. However, device identification remains a challenging task due to the diversity of IoT devices and the constant evolution of their characteristics. This paper presents our attempt at device identification by analyzing distinct device characteristics observed during network communication and using different machine learning techniques.

Cancer disparities are adverse differences in cancer measures that exist among certain population groups. Given that the role they play not only in the disease prognosis but also in therapy response, there is an urgent need to understand what causes them. Most studies investigate these disparities by analyzing transcriptomic data and in particular miRNAs for their regulatory role, but only focusing on expression levels. To face this challenge we propose MIRROR, a new method which analyzes a differential co-expression network of miRNAs between patients’ cohorts, to study the role they play at the target genes’ level. Doing so, we can study the altered molecular mechanism that are linked to cancer disparities. The application of MIRROR to two different cases of cancer disparities has demonstrated its efficacy in identifying molecular players involved in the considered disparity, presenting itself as a viable option to approach this challenge.

Model predictive control (MPC) is a modern advanced control strategy which has great reputation because of its excellent reference tracking performance and the ability to deal with process constraints, time delay and multivariable problems. However, the gas turbine is difficult to model accurately and unmeasurable disturbances are unavoidable, which limits the application of MPC to the gas turbine. To solve these problems, a process-model-free design method for MPC via a reference-model (RM)-based proportional-integral (PI) controller – desired dynamic equational (DDE)-PI controller (MPC-DDE) is proposed in this paper. The DDE-PI provides the design model for the MPC and handle with unmeasurable disturbances while MPC provides a rolling optimized set point for DDE-PI. Simulation results illustrate the superiorities of the proposed hierarchical control strategy in reference tracking, disturbance rejection and robustness, which indicates the promising prospect of practical application of MPC-DDE to the gas turbine.

Nowadays our normal life is unavailable without the Internet. Through the web, the same information is accessed from different places in the world. Both desktop computers and various types of mobile devices, including phones, can be used. Recently, e-learning as a model for knowledge learning has become more popular. This became a necessity after the global COVID pandemic. In some aspects, online learning is even more effective than in person learning as it allows students to study at their own speed. In the present paper, a Web-based application for learning theoretical knowledge in a science subject field is developed. Lectures and sample quiz questions to assess the knowledge are implemented therein. In case of an incorrect answer to the test questions, the application refers the learner to the place in the theory corresponding to the question. Two roles are implemented in the application – administrator and user (learner). The following technologies - HTML, CSS, JavaScript, ***, MongoDB, Bootstrap, jQuery И PUG, are used to develop the application. Desktop and mobile versions of the application are proposed. It is directed only at learning and testing theoretical knowledge, in particular in the different courses in the field of Electrical engineering. It can be used to simplify some of the part-time learning education for students (lectures, tutorials, course assessments, and projects). The respective labs will be performed on-site - in laboratories. The final assessment of the studied subject can also be done online. It will save transportation time for both learners and teachers. And, time is money.

Given the reduced costs of establishing Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations and the need to improve their accessibility, it is essential for EV developers and governments to identify optimized locations for new stations. This study presents a predictive modeling approach using Machine Learning to determine the optimal sites for EV charging stations in Glasgow. While various machine learning methods are available for this purpose, we focus on Linear Regression due to its simplicity and high accuracy. By analyzing a comprehensive dataset of 207 AC charging stations-including factors latitude, longitude, population density, number of kinds of plugs, total number of plugs, price per kWh, traffic conditions, distance to the nearest station, Air Quality Index (AQI), and land value - we aim to provide urban planners and policymakers with actionable insights. The study evaluates the performance of the Linear Regression model in predicting the most suitable locations for charging stations. The results indicate that the proposed model achieved impressive accuracy, with R 2 , Mean Absolute Error (MAE), and Mean Squared Error (MSE) values of 0.89, 0.05, and 0.08, respectively. This research contributes to the ongoing efforts in urban planning for sustainable mobility by offering a data-driven methodology for EV infrastructure development.

The design of photonic/opto-electronic structures is a crucial field of research due to the wide range of applications in which these devices are utilized, such as communications, sensing and imaging. The traditional approach to design, which involves numerical simulation and iterative adjustments, is both time-consuming and computationally intensive. The ability to design-emulate photonic structures quickly and efficiently could bring new technologies to market at a faster pace and can also facilitate the process of extracting critical performance metrics from complex fabricated devices. The Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) and its use as a transmitter broadly used in data center interconnects is an example of a rather complex nonlinear system also exhibiting bandwidth limitation mechanisms attributed to its frequency response and parasitic effects, and thus its numerical simulation based on conventional rate equations can only partially approximate its behavior. When it comes to modelling fabricated devices, such physical models are notoriously difficult to parameterize in order to fit to observed laboratory data;in contrast, the emulation of the experimentally recorded behavior with the use of nonlinear models based on neural networks provides a much more efficient path to modelling, and with potentially higher prediction accuracy [1]. In this work, two types of bidirectional recurrent neural networks (RNN), namely Long Short-Term Memory (bi-LSTM) and Vanilla (bi-VRNN) were used to simulate the dynamic behavior of an experimentally characterized VCSEL-based, PAM-4 transmitter, exhibiting a high prediction accuracy approaching 100%. © 2023 IEEE.

Resistive Random-Access Memory (ReRAM)-based Processing In-Memory (PIM) Accelerator has emerged as a promising computing architecture for memory-intensive applications, such as Deep Neural Networks (DNNs). However, due to its immaturity, ReRAM devices often suffer from various reliability issues, which hinder the practicality of the PIM architecture and lead to a severe degradation in DNN accuracy. Among various reliability issues, device variation and offset current from High Resistance State (HRS) cell have been considered as major problems in a ReRAM-based PIM architecture. Due to these problems, the throughput of the ReRAM-based PIM is reduced as fewer wordlines are activated. In this paper, we propose VECOM, a novel approach that includes a variation-resilient encoding technique and an offset compensation scheme for a robust ReRAM-based PIM architecture. The first technique (i.e., VECOM encoding) is built based on the analysis of the weight pattern distribution of DNN models, along with the insight into the ReRAM's variation property. The second technique, VECOM offset compensation, tolerates offset current in PIM by mapping the conductance of each Multi-level Cell (MLC) level added with a specific offset conductance. Experimental results in various DNN models and datasets show that the proposed techniques can increase the throughput of the PIM architecture by up to 9.1 times while saving 50% of energy consumption without any software overhead. Additionally, VECOM is also found to endure low R-ratio ReRAM cell (up to 7) with a negligible accuracy drop.
