Visible light communications (VLC) have been proposed as reliable high-capacity wireless optical communication systems for indoor access networks. This technology comprises a solution that does not harm human tissues and has been especially suggested for ultra-reliable environments like hospitals. In this paper we utilize machine learning for investigating the wireless optical channel in indoοr areas where ultra-reliable communications are needed and hence signal coverage should be guaranteed. It is proven that ML methods can reliably and efficiently predict the Radio Environment Map (REM) of a VLC enabled communication system. © 2022 IEEE.

A multi-mass system is a mechanical system that consists of several masses such as a motor, load, and gear that are connected by a flexible shaft. The mechanical fluctuations in drives with flexible coupling between the motor and the driven device can no longer be ignored, as they could in the past when requirements for speed control dynamics were low. These prerequisites pertain to the regulation of the rotational speed and position of the servo drive and are quantified by the magnitude of speed step response time and speed fault elimination time caused by the step change of load torque, which, in modern drives, can be measured. In this study, the dynamical behavior of a two-mass resonant system with a three-term controller for control of torque and speed is investigated using eigenvalues analysis. The proposed control strategy aims to eliminate the rotational fluctuations of the motor shaft, dampen the load torque disturbance impact, provide a quick response to changes in the base speed while avoiding increases in the load speed, and be resilient to instability. Finally, numerical outcomes demonstrate the effect of the presented controller application on improving the dynamic demeanor of the two-mass test system. Based on the outcomes, the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is highly dependent on system parameters. Due to the inherent parameter uncertainty in the multi-mass system, the use of parameter estimators based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) is suggested for future work. © 2023 IEEE.

Consortium blockchains, with their decentralized characteristics, have found widespread applications across various industries. However, this also forms isolated data islands. These data islands have become obstacles to data sharing between industries, and the issue of cross-chain data consistency verification remains unresolved. Current mainstream cross-chain technologies solve asset transfer issues through complex transaction steps, thus failing to meet the need for efficient data transmission. Existing research has proposed solutions for cross-chain data consistency verification, but two major issues remain. Firstly, these schemes do not consider data changes or support data dynamic operations. Secondly, these schemes involve a significant amount of complex computations, leading to slow efficiency. To address the above issues, we propose DataJudge, a cross-chain data consistency verification scheme based on an extended Merkle hash tree. This scheme not only verifies cross-chain data consistency but also effectively fills the gap in existing schemes regarding dynamic operations. Additionally, we modify the paillier homomorphic encryption. To improve efficiency, we do not introduce many complex computations. Furthermore, the extended Merkle hash tree structure enhances efficiency. Finally, we implement a prototype system and evaluate it. The results demonstrate that DataJudge can effectively verify cross-chain data consistency and outperform existing schemes such as DCIV and BeDCV. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Diesel-electric locomotives are equipped with one or more synchronous generators driven by diesel engines, that provide the necessary electrical energy for their operation. These generators are usually provided with some protection relays, depending on their rated power and their type of service. Standard stator-ground fault protection has a setting for rated conditions. In case of variable speed and voltage operation, the protection does not cover all the operation range of the machine. In addition, unwanted tripping may occur due to incorrect filtering of the third harmonic. In this paper, an auto-adaptative stator ground protection function is presented, for the operation of synchronous machines at variable voltage and frequency. A specific case study is tackled, focused on the main generators of a diesel-electric locomotive. Numerous simulations are carried out to verify the proposed protection method. The obtained results are promising, and they can be used in other synchronous machines operating at variable speed. © 2023 IEEE.

Backchanneling (e.g., right, okay, uhhuh) during a dialogue signals that a person is engaged and following along with what is being said. Although backchannels often overlap with other utterances, they are not interpreted as an attempt to take the floor when used successfully. Limited work has been done on investigating the frequency and overlap length of backchannels in the language of Autistic children. After controlling for age, sex, and IQ, we found that Autistic children used significantly less backchannels than their Typically Developing (TD) peers. Additionally, we found that Autistic children were less likely than TD children to produce a backchannel with a greater overlap length. © 2023 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Social media plays a crucial role in providing information related to natural disasters, which can help accelerate the response to such events. Messages shared by social media users can offer valuable insights into natural disaster occurrences. The use of a 2D CNN model combined with LSTM has been applied in previous research for classifying natural disasters. Word embedding techniques such as Word2Vec, FastText, and GloVe have been utilized, but there are still limitations in the word representations used. This research aims to address these shortcomings by incorporating wikipedia text into the word embedding process, which is expected to enhance word representations. Additionally, the research also applies hyperparameter tuning using a grid search method to optimize the performance of the 2D CNN + LSTM model. The results obtained from this research show improved accuracy compared to previous research, with accuracy values reaching 83.55% for floods, 92.11% for forest fires, and 81.83% for earthquakes. These findings demonstrate that the inclusion of wikipedia text in word embedding and the optimization of the 2D CNN + LSTM model through hyperparameter tuning with grid search significantly improve the model’s accuracy.

The public e-Procurement system in Malaysia is a crucial component of the e-Government services. Its primary function is to provide a platform for government agencies to efficiently procure goods and services from business users. The user experience (UX) of this e-Procurement system has emerged as a pivotal factor in the success of the broader e-Government digital transformation. Ensuring that the digitalization of the public e-Procurement system aligns with its objectives and delivers a top-tier Government Electronic Procurement System is imperative. This research aims to gain a comprehensive understanding of the UX issues and challenges faced by stakeholders when using the public e-Procurement system. The study employs a qualitative approach, delving into the perspectives and insights of e-Procurement system users. Data from interview sessions involving nine (9) participants have been meticulously interpreted, coded, and subjected to thematic analysis, revealing five distinct dimensions of issues and challenges: usability, performance, operational, quality, and user satisfaction. To address these identified concerns, we proposed several recommendations. Enhancements in system user interface (UI), navigational aspects, system features, performance, and operational aspects are essential to ensure sustained quality and user satisfaction within the e-Procurement system. The study also explores avenues for future work to further refine and augment these improvements. © 2023 IEEE.

The influence maximization problem (IMP) has been proposed in social networks. Nowadays, it is considered an important and practical problem due to the earnings potential by identifying a set of influential nodes, and therefore, it has been attracted by many researchers. This problem seeks to identify a set with K nodes among the social network nodes to maximize the influence and diffusion of information in that community. Algorithms proposed by other researchers have many shortcomings in terms of accuracy and run time of the algorithm. Hence, this article aimed to find the best, most accurate, and fastest solution to the *** article presented the UXM algorithm and used the User Experience criterion for the first time to solve this problem. At first, taking into account the reach club phenomenon and using criteria such as clustering coefficient, degree and also using user experience, nodes with more influence have been selected as the primary candidate set. Then, according to the component nodes, K final influential nodes have been selected. In this way, it could identify the set of nodes as accurately as possible with high efficiency in the shortest possible time. The evaluation of this algorithm and its comparison with other algorithms indicated excellent results in terms of run time and accuracy in selecting the set of nodes by the proposed algorithm. © 2023 IEEE.

Sleep study is of major importance for the assessment of sleep apneas, sleep stages or the diagnosis of sleep disorders. Although there exists a variety of tools for the evaluation of sleep, including the gold standard polysomnography (PSG) or high-tech wearable devices, the last decade there is also an increasing interest in the use of ultra wide-band (UWB) radar sensors for non-contact medical studies. The objective of this study is to develop a pre-clinical environment for the measurement of two important vital signs of the human functions, i.e., the respiratory and heartbeat rates, through UWB radar recordings of chest motion. For this purpose, at first we composed a simulating chest and heart motion architecture which represents these two basic body functions in parallel. After that, with the employment of a UWB-radar, we performed extensive recordings of simulator's displacements, and we concluded to the mathematical estimation of the respiratory and heartbeat rates, compared to the initial frequencies given to the simulated procedure. Our experimental results prove that we can estimate both rates in an accurate manner and even if these pre-clinical tests are made under ideal conditions, the UWB-radar can further be used for clinical assessment, with promising perspectives. © 2023 Copyright for this paper by its authors.
