Despite growing interest in mobile games for older adults, there is limited exploration of older adults’ gaming behaviors, perceptions, and experiences as they engage with casual puzzle games over a period of time. To address this, we conducted a 9-month study with 20 older adults, examining training needs, in-situ experiences, and preferences. Participants were trained on tablet PCs and ten selected games. During the study, participants documented their experiences and attended technology workshops. Gaming behaviors were logged and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, revealing patterns and statistically signifcant diferences in play frequency and duration over the course of the study. Thematic analysis identifed facilitators and barriers to engagement such as customization, co-play experiences, and health issues. Based on these fndings, we recommend incorporating educational elements, enhancing user control, leveraging identity and nostalgia, supporting social interactions, designing for tangible interaction, and emphasizing the importance of learning aids. Future research should test the efectiveness of these recommendations in increasing older adults’ engagement with casual games. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

With the emergence of deep learning, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models have been proposed to advance the progress of various applications, including face recognition, object detection, pattern recognition, and number plate recognition. The utilization of CNNs in these areas has considerably improved security and surveillance capabilities by providing automated recognition solutions, such as traffic surveillance, access control devices, biometric security systems, and attendance systems. However, there is still room for improvement in this field. This paper discusses several classic CNN models, such as LeNet-5, AlexNet, VGGNet, GoogLeNet, and ResNet, as well as lightweight models for mobile-based applications, such as MobileNet, ShuffleNet, and EfficientNet. Additionally, deep CNN-based face recognition models, such as DeepFace, DeepID, FaceNet, and SphereFace, are explored, along with their architectural characteristics, advantages, disadvantages, and recognition accuracy. The results indicate that many scholars are researching lightweight face recognition, but applying it to mobile devices is impractical due to high computational costs. Furthermore, noise label learning is not robust in actual scenarios, and unlabeled face learning is expensive in manual labeling. Finally, this paper concludes with a discussion of the current problems faced by face recognition technology and its potential future directions for development. © 2023 by the authors of this article. This research paper presents a comprehensive investigation into the optimization of resource allocation in 5G networks through the technique of Downlink and Uplink Decoupling (DUDe). With the growing need for accurate modeling and scenario planning in 5G systems, DUDe allows for the configuration of an additional, lower frequency signal on the uplink to complement the existing uplink signal, rebalancing the uplink/downlink difference at the cell edge and enhancing coverage and network capacity. Drawing on extensive literature and industry trends, this study explores the benefits and challenges of DUDe, considering its impact on network performance, user experience, and future developments. The paper also introduces a simulation-based methodology and experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of DUDe in improving coverage, capacity, latency, and energy efficiency. The findings contribute to the understanding of DUDe's potential in optimizing 5G networks, providing valuable insights for researchers and network operators in designing and deploying efficient resource allocation strategies for enhanced network performance in various scenarios. © 2023 IEEE.

Corrosion poses a significant challenge in industries due to material degradation and high maintenance costs, making effective inhibitors essential. Recent studies suggest expired pharmaceuticals as alternative corrosion inhibitors, but identifying the most efficient compounds can be time-consuming. This study applies machine learning models, particularly Gradient Boosting Regressor (GBR), to predict corrosion inhibition efficiency (CIE). The developed model is integrated into a web-based application, enabling real-time, accurate CIE predictions. Results show GBR as the more precise model for predicting CIE, with low error rates. The streamlit-based web application offers a user-friendly platform, facilitating quick identification of suitable inhibitors. It is flexible, supporting analysis beyond corrosion inhibitors, and significantly enhances the efficiency of the evaluation process. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

There is a growing research interest in how video games influence individuals, with many studies highlighting the positive aspects of gaming to players, with multiple benefits, including task switching, working memory, visual short-Term memory, mental rotation, etc. In our work, we examine if the benefits found in previous research influence how users interact with computers and in particular user interfaces (UIs). To this end, we designed two interfaces for the same car renting application, one incorporating game UI elements-That are specifically used in video games-and the other as a conventional version of the same web application that follows the UI design of similar websites. A lab experiment was conducted where the participants (n=51) used the UIs to book a car. The experiment examined the differences between gamers and non-gamers concerning efficiency (measured by time to complete a task), stress events during the use of the interfaces (measured by a sensor indicating skin conductance response), users' evaluation of the UIs, and user preference on which interface was more satisfying to use. Results indicated that there were no significant differences between gamers and non-gamers in efficiency, the users' evaluation of the UIs, and the number of stress events for both UIs tested, but there was a significant difference in the user preference regarding which UI was more satisfying to use, with gamers selecting the web-based UI while non-gamers the game-based one. © 2022 IEEE.

In this digital era, attracting new students from outside the region to enter a college or university is difficult. This problem can be solved with good marketing and information dissemination techniques. Information is a type of data that has been processed and organized so that it has relevant meaning for the recipient. Useful information can be used to help make decisions, gain new knowledge, or solve problems. One medium for providing information is by using videos that can be uploaded to YouTube for dissemination. However, problems arise when the information depends on the point of view of the video content creator, who may not provide enough information sought by users in their videos. Virtual reality (VR) technology can be pursued as one of the solutions to overcome the lack of detail and control in videos for users to get the expected information. One of the technologies in VR that allows people to explore a three-dimensional virtual world on a web platform is the 360° WebVR technology. Since users have full control over what can be seen using WebVR, it is expected that this technology can assist users in getting deeper and detailed information related to their needs. This study aims to determine the effectiveness and efficiency of using YouTube videos and WebVR in distributing information and delivering detailed information to users. The results show that WebVR technology has the potential to provide greater control over more detailed information to users who use it, in contrast to traditional two-dimensional video playback technology. © 2023 ACM.

In recent years, web programming has increased to the extent where it is capable of rendering 3D objects on the web. Its rendering performance varied depending on where it ran and what library was used to render the objects. This study aims to investigate the rendering performance of several 3D renderer libraries that render 3D objects in an augmented reality application. WebGL is one of the APIs that uses the Javascript programming language to render 3D objects in web applications. To create augmented reality on the web, a JavaScript library called *** is needed, which allows developers to create augmented reality on the web without the need to use additional plugins. *** supports various types of augmented reality, i.e., bookmarks, images, and location-based types. It also allows developers to incorporate visual and audio effects into augmented reality. This study aims to investigate the rendering performance of WebGL raw shaders and GLSL shaders in an HTML-based augmented reality application. The results suggested that both WebGL and GLSL could render low-poly and medium-poly 3D objects well. However, according to the test, WebGL performance drops significantly when rendering high-polygon 3D objects. Nonetheless, the GLSL library could render the same high-poly 3D objects at a similar level with native library rendering performance. Thus, suggest GLSL shaders as the recommended library to render 3D objects on the web. © 2023 ACM.

The next generation of electricity grid infrastructure, known as the 'smart grid', integrates smart ICT (information and communication technology) into existing grids in order to alleviate the drawbacks of existing one-way grid systems. The security of the smart grid cyber infrastructure is a growing concern, though, as a result of the interconnection of significant power plants through communication networks. Since cyber-attacks can destroy energy data, beginning with personal information leaking from grid members, they can result in serious incidents like huge outages and the destruction of power network infrastructure. We shall thus propose a secure smart energy management system based on the inclusion of optical fiber sensors and blockchain technology in smart grids. While optical fiber sensors allow real-time monitoring and management of electrical energy flow, Blockchain offers a secure platform to safeguard the smart grid against cyberattacks and unauthorized access. Additionally, this integration has advantages in terms of improved security, efficiency, dependability, and flexibility in energy management. An in-depth analysis of the advantages and drawbacks of combining blockchain technology with optical fiber is provided in this paper. © 2023 IEEE.

When a natural disaster occurs, the process of evacuating victims after a disaster must be carried out immediately to reduce the risk due to the late evacuation process. In this evacuation process, the Search and Rescue (SAR) team played a big role in addition to focusing on the safety of victims and also paying attention to their own safety. Meanwhile, due to the large area of the disaster the search took quite a long time. In this paper, research was carried out to facilitate the evacuation process at the location of volcanic disasters by using drones carrying electronic devices to find the whereabouts of victims on the surface. This process of detecting and classifying is based on the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) method with the MobileNetV2 model. We train the data set of disaster victims using batch sizes 16 and 32 with epochs of 40, 80 and 100. The resulting model has the greatest accuracy of 0.81 and f1-score of 0.86. © 2022 IEEE.
